Thank you for sharing this information. When I went to college, I felt exactly the way Gabby did. Constantly having to explain or fight for diversity, and then being looked at to explain my own personal history.
As an african american it was very difficult to Express myself in a African Cultural way in my experience in the classroom. Mass majority have to understand the ethnic differences that can defect an individual if he or she does not have a knowledge of self.
I’m black and never thought I couldn’t express myself because of my pigment. You think there’s genetic makeup difference that we act differently or something and need special treatment?
No Fcue there are cultural differences that if not taken into account, put students at a disadvantage. Just like if an engineering teacher only taught to one type of learner, let's say auditory learners & only used their voice to teach, and never offered any visual representation of data or hands-on opportunities to build & give examples & also expected all students to show their show their understanding by say giving a speech, that puts visual & kinesthetic learners at a disadvantage. When teachers aren't aware of the differences, they inevitably perpetuate disadvantages & teach to only one type of learner.
I think what's interesting too, for any viewers for any background, is that implicit biases may be greatly different amongst different parts of the world. Obviously these demographics are based on American statistics considering the diversity - but it's interesting to look at. Some people might watch this and think, "well a majority of my school was latinx, asian, etc" and those groups moved up in education because the staff represented the students. Other's can relate to Gabi or Jo, watching there progress differenciate cause of race.
Although some of the examples in the video show implicit bias in action, others are anything but explicit. I would suggest perhaps retitling the video to be about Institutional Racism.
People do show a preference for “white-sounding” names tho, and compound that in the publishing, journalism, and education industries, and that’s a lot of “non-white-sounding” names slipping thru the cracks.
@@UGNAvalon If im interested in a book i will read it, I don't care about the authors name or their race. My adpoted little brother's name translated from Korean to English is Cole. It's funny to see how left wing politics are being put into my college assignments.

@@breakmaster2107 systemic racism is based in CRT, which is nothing more then a theory. And because one of the premises of CRT postulates that racism is present in every and all institutions , this would imply that all institutions are working together coherently to suppress minorities. While absolutely systemic racism was present back in the day, especially during Jim Crow and segregation era, there is very little to no evidence of a system working in unison TODAY that is actively working to suppress minorities.
This is so extremely skewed it's marvelous as an example of this ideology's deliberate misinterpretation of every issue: 1. The use of the term latinx is a two-fer. It's an example of both white supremacist thinking by disparaging Spanish grammar as patriarchal and an attempt to queer the language by rendering the normal problematic. 2. The current notion that students must see themselves represented in the faculty and the curriculum in order to succeed has no basis, considering the experience of academically successful Asians who rarely have an Asian instructor or curricular representation, and considering the experience of millions of immigrants throughout the nation's history. The studies this assertion is based on are so methodologically flawed (see Dee & Penner as a prime example) they are embarrassing to read. 3. The term hispanic "abarca mucho y poco aprieta." Twin brothers emigrated from Hungary, one to the USA, the other to Argentina, where he started a family and then immigrated to the USA. The latter brother uses the term hispanic, and enjoys all the privileges that accords his family. The ancestors of Desi Arnaz, a Cuban, received the earliest land grants from Spain. Why do people of Spanish descent receive treatment that differs from Slovaks, Swedes, Greeks, Turks, etc? What EXACTLY is the point of the term hispanic? Whom is it intended to benefit? A Q'anjob'al speaking Guatemalan Mayan has nothing in common with a Spanglish-speaking Nuyorican, an Afro-Cuban revolutionary or a German-Chilean oligarch. 4. The assumption is absurd that the professoriate should reflect CURRENT population demographics when it takes a great deal of time to become a professor and the population has shifted enormously in a short period. By the 1960 census, the population was 87% European, 11% African, 1% Latin, 1% Asian. Exponential demographic change occurred from 1960 to 2019: 60% European, 18% Latin, 13% Black, 5.7% Asian, and 2.8% Other. 5. The disparities in transfer admission to Berkeley do not immediately indicate ethnic preference. We don't know how many white and how many hispanic applicants there were, nor do we know their GPAs and activities. Berkeley has actually cut in HALF the number of whites accepted from 1973 (13,587) to 2020 (6,590) and increased the number of hispanics by 855%! In 1973, 630 hispanics; in 2021, 6,022. See pages.github.berkeley.edu/OPA/our-berkeley/enroll-history.html The video presumes all applicants were equally qualified. Berkeley pays its diversity director, a hispanic woman, OVER $325000, and she complains of the "emotional toll." This is such a mess I'm embarrassed for USC to put out such ill-conceived drivel in the name of ideology.
By now there's probably more colored people in America than white. Isn't there a lot of immigrants there? In Canada there's more colored people than white people.
Your counselor's bias (or your friend's or parents' biases, etc) has nothing to do with the degree you choose. Your life and actions are your choice. Stop blaming. If Race A has 100 applicants, but Race B only has 25 applicants, statistically the application of someone from Race A will be chosen.
disagree. this happens. my counselor refused to put me in advanced placement courses although I had attenended a private school where kids were accepted into the Ivy League as a matter of course. Sometime teachers and prinicipals and school board members get a bad rap. no one consideres guidance counselors play a role. Families are responsible. if your parents put down college, it's unlikely you'll apply unless someone encourages you to do so. It's not blaming. Also I dont how often councilors would actually place students differently Soley based on their ethnicity. I mean is there any data to back this up? And if the latinx student apparently spoke perfect English, why would the councilor suggest that the student take a course primarily for ESL students? That would not be an example of implicit bias but rather blatant racism. I don't know many councilors that would actually hear a student speak English fluently and place them in ESL.
