The patient sits with a mirror obscuring the affected limb, so that the functioning limb on their opposite side is mirrored, creating the illusion for the patient that they have a functioning limb on each side of their body. This illusion can help to create new neural pathways, meaning the patient can potentially regain some function in their paralysed limb.
