I think the "heavy metal" genre description for them is based on their common themes of occultism, satan, vampires & other monsters, etc. Very common themes in heavy metal going back to Black Sabbath's early days, if you recall (before heavy metal as a genre had really been defined). Musically, the use of synthesized pipe organ makes me think of late '60s and early '70s rock, especially Blue Oyster Cult, Deep Purple, and Rainbow. Some of those bands' music was also prototypical metal, so the description still fits for Ghost.
I was born in 75 and I grew up mostly with old rock songs from the 70's and 80's and then Nirvana hit with Teen spirit. My mind couldn't handle it I listened to that song and later the album hundreds of times back then. It was just completely different from anything at the time. I have had bands that have had similar impacts on me over time but that was my first "WTF IS THIS!!!!" moment.

My absolute favorite Ghost tune, as well as one of my absolute favorite songs of all time. Really a different group, Ghost is. I think they are the Blue Oyster Cult of our time, truly underrated musicians and songwriters. I love GHOST!
On the square and on the level are Free Mason themes. That is more what the song is about. I believe powers clandestine are that as well. I think the swearing is like taking an oath in front of satan instead of God. Ghost is definitely a mix of several genres. Watching live videos of this song is crazy. The crowd goes nuts and is louder than the band half the time on the chorus.

Great song, great video, great reaction. The whole "Metropolis" vibe is so cool. Some things I found interesting: the "brother" in the movie is the same actor from "Danse Macabre" video ("I'm lookin' at a party" guy); when the bats flying off the screen, Papa takes a moment to smooth his hair; and the red cardinal on the headstone represents the coming of Cardinal Copia, Papa III's successor.

You're right - they are not metal - they are Ghost. To many genres to be anything but their own. Last big band that did that was Queen (like 'em or loath 'em). Some songs of Prequelle are really pop. Love it all. And I've been a metal fan since 80s. They are not metal though as they have Abba-esque tones in Dance Macabre imo - though with dark lyrics. The guy's voice is so pure and lyrics so dark - THAT is the Ghost

I feel like this is an appropriate channel to mention this, but I found that this particular music video has a TON of what I would call "dark Masonic" symbolism and themes. In fact, it almost serves as a mock initiatory rite for the audience, hence the literal breaking of the 4th wall in the theater scene. If anybody's interested in my take, I can elaborate. I actually study occult topics, and am just all around fascinated by esoteric symbolism and concepts in general. For the record, I LOVE this particular song and Cirice, and listen to them often. So, this is not a moral judgment, but just an observation.
