This WAS really cool, don't get me wrong, but something only Gen Xers know is that the Gobots (yes, the kicked to the curb "brothers" of the Transformers from way back) did this back in 1983! (An episode with another dimension where the Guardians are bad, and the Renegades are good). But to be fair, both ideas came from Star Trek's mirror universe first shown in the 60s
