I have seen it many times at the dealership in the 70's and 80's. Simple fix, he either left them loose OR he used the bolt assembly to force the bushing back into the A arm. by doing this i will force the bolt to snap after a period of time. From the arch in the A arm it was not pressed into the A arm as it should have been. Be safe, love the videos!

First time I've ever seen this happen. Looks like the front control arms were rebuilt and the bushing bolts were left loose until the weight was put back on the suspension. Then they forgot to tighten them. Luckily not too much damage.

I just had pretty much the same thing happen to me on my 1970 except I was just coming to a normal stop at a stop sign and heard a thunk and a pop (which was the upper control arm coming off and breaking the fan shroud). Luckily, it didn’t hit the radiator. Following your instructions to fix it. Thanks for the video.

WOW! Just happened to me two weeks ago on my 69! Had to hit the brakes hard low speed in town and...."pop"!!!! RF upper control arm came apart. Bought this car last year restored. A-arms had been rebuilt but apparently they didn't know what they were doing. I ordered a new set of upper A-arms from Top Flight and all is good now. Needless to say I went over the torque on every suspension component up front after this incident.

I have a 1970 Nova that had control arm bushings redone 5 years ago. Those end cap bolts on the upper control arm pivot bar need to be torqued to proper spec and should be checked occasionally. Mine came loose a couple of times a few months after the job was done. They stayed tight all these years but I recently found a torque spec and they still tightened up a little more than I had them. Probably same thing here. Those rubber bushings pushing and twisting against those big washers can twist the bolts out even if they seem tight enough. In hindsight, if they'd been torqued properly they might never have come loose but probably good to check every so often.

Same thing happened to me. I had rebuilt the suspension, first time I'd ever had a suspension completely apart. The one front bolt hole had some glass beads in it from the bead blaster, and it didn't torque properly. I felt it coming loose and was almost stopped when it popped off. I was able to find the bolt and pop it back on and get home. Chased the threads (thoroughly this time), used a little Locktite, 20-odd years later, still going.

I have owned three C3 Corvettes. That issue may have been cause by improper assembly, but all three of mine had serious front end problems when I bought them. Every one of them had at least one upper control arm bushing where the rubber was completely gone. It was metal to metal. The ball joints and tie rods were completely worn out and just flopping around. I replaced all the ball joints, tie rod ends, center links, and all the "rubber" bushings with polyurethane bushings. A guy I worked with at the time had what I believe was a '78 Caprice, it was only 2 years old when he bought it, and shortly after buying it, his wife was driving it, and the left side upper ball joint literally broke in half. After work we went out to look at it, and spent several hours in the dark with flashlights chiseling the rivets out, pounding the stud out of the spindle, and installing the new ball joint. GM quality back in those days was TERRIBLE. Unfortunately it's even worse today, but some of that is due to all the new garbage technology they are using.
I noticed the bottom of that car looked pretty ratty, with a lot of dirt and trash everywhere. It looked like the underside had been painted over dirt and rust and the paint was peeling. I seriously detailed the underside of all of mine. Fortunately I had access to a hydraulic lift.

Seen this happen but not from a part failure, a frame failure where a guy went over a speedbump and the wheel folded in on a 78, as a wield either hadnt been done right or it cracked or came undone overtime and folded inwards around the A arm and the engine mount itself, a straight total out, which kinda made me think, okay the same GM quality I hate is in the Corvette, great.... turns out when those people were designing the thing when they went from the C1 to the C2, as all a C3 is is a Corvette with a new body on it
they deleted an X brace that was key to the structure of the car underneath, and kept it that way until the C4 generation came out
and it causes issues like that to come about from basic wear and tear and fatigue with the wields on the frame, like you need to check your wields people, its GM and when people found out about that car and saw it, they checked their owns over
and they found two others with the same issue in mid progress, one in resto, which had the body off and man was that wield coming undone as plain as day, and by telling a friend to check his, I actually saved a 68 he had owned since 72',
he did say he thinks it was the rust that did it however but nontheless its still worth checking over
and you wonder why the Cowl shake is so bad sometimes on these older vettes though, the frame might be perrished and people dont even know it given the main thing holding it together is the body itself like on that C2 they showed on here that went in for a resto
only to have the frame fall in two when they took the body off like something out of a james bond film with roger moore from 1985'

on my '74 that I owned when I was a kid. the lower A arm mounting actually pulled loose from the cross member, or in other words the mounting of the lower A arm actually failed, the solution was pull the motor, weld in an entire cross member from a '72 frame that we found. if you run across a '74 that has a welded in cross member contact me!!! it might be my car from 30 years ago. I want it again. the car ended up in southern oklahoma when I sold it.
