    Great video, I appreciate the testing at the end to show what ALL the transfer case position lights were supposed to be (i.e. Part Time - vs- Full time) and your explanation was spot on! Thanks so much! saved me a bit of time and hassle and the cost of a new sensor all together! #newJeepOwner

    Thanks for an excellent video, eased my mind that a recent CV joint failure wasn't caused by the transfer case being in Part Time, it was just the switch/sender - cool!

    Part#: Dorman 600-558 Transfer Case Switch $38.75 on Amazon
    Thanks for posting!!!
    Mine was sticking too for a bit then just stayed on regardless of switching to and from part time to 2WD.
    EASY install thanks to you pointing out location! 👍
    Used a large pair of vise grips with little torque to free up. Finding hole again took a little patience to thread back in.
    I'm at 240K+ too....thanks for the help!

    I changed this switch becasue I was having the flickering off and on problem with the light. For a day it was fine. Now the light is flickering off and on again. I notice it does it only when I come to a stop. Sometimes it does it when I accelerate from zero. Any ideas?

      I'm not familiar with the Liberty but if the 4WD system works the same as the Grand Cherokee you would feel the front wheels binding while turning on dry pavement. Someone with more knowledge might come along and correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding of the Part Time 4WD is that it turns the front and rear wheels at the same speed, unlike Full Time 4WD where the front wheels receive less power than the rear. I never tried driving mine in Part Time to see how bad the binding would be, but my guess would be that it would be pretty obvious that it's not in 2WD. If you can make turns smoothly I'd say it's just a switch or other electrical issue causing the light to stay on. Thanks for watching!!

    My jeep grand cherokee 2002 Part Time light not working at all , does this method will fix the problem ? as when I change from full time to part time there is no light on

    • @58_Powermaster
      @58_Powermaster  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's possible that the part of the switch that moves is stuck which would cause the Part Time indicator to not light up. The switch only controls the indicator light and has nothing to do with the function of the transfer case...so if you can verify that the Jeep is going into Part Time drive ok than you can safely narrow the problem to either the switch, the wiring from the switch to the dash, or a burned out bulb in the instrument panel for the Part Time light. A burned out bulb is very unlikely since Part Time 4 wheel drive should only be used in certain road conditions. I hope this helps.

      very helpful thank you , I will check the switch and the wires , because I have done checked the bulb and it's okay there is no problem with it , thanks again

    #58 Powermaster I am currently having same problem with my 2004 Jeep Laredo. The 4WD gear is on 2WD but PART TIME light stays on for a minute or two and then goes off. Then come on again and may stay as long as it deems fit .
    Transmission mechanic say of-course it's not transmission problem but exactly what you described here. However, he said it will cost me 750$ to rebuild and fix it. How true is this?. From your video shows quiet less than that.
    He also said it should not be driven around that the car may stop moving. Not sure if he wants to scare me fix fix it really quick through was the reason he said that. Overall, does it cost this much to fix?. Is the PART TIME light on something to worry about or detrimental to the car in anyway?
    Thank you

    • @58_Powermaster
      @58_Powermaster  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Rhode Scholar Sorry for the late reply...As far as what it cost to fix, i bought the switch on ebay for about $60. The only other thing you might need is some penetrating oil, crescent wrench and a way to lift the vehicle so that you can safely crawl underneath. As long as it's only the switch going bad, you should be fine if the light going on and off doesn't bother you. If the transfer case is somehow going in and out of part time, you would feel the drivetrain binding when you try to turn on dry pavement because Part Time is meant to be used in more extreme conditions like ice deep snow or mud where the wheels will slip. If this is happening I would stop driving it or only drive it to get repaired as you could cause major damage. If it's only the switch going bad, I think $750 is way to much to pay someone to do it...I would suggest getting a second or third quote from other mechanics. Thanks for watching and good luck!!

    • @11z9az
      @11z9az 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      58 Powermaster .....okay thanks. This really helps. You said exactly what he said though. Maybe "major damage" you mentioned is what he also refered to the 4WD gear box that it might damage and will cost me 750. So far, I don't feel any strange thing. Part Time light could be on for some minutes and could go off for few period and be back on. Like you suggested. I rather try other quotes.
      However, since Part Time light is being on, I was in snow and used 4WD gear PT and perfectly worked. The best is to get other diagnosis and quotes bcus I may never know if the problem doesn't cost that much and just throw away money like that.

      Since I complained about my Jeep Grand's Part Time light, I did not fix it and still drive it. No problem at all. Matter of fact, the light was off since. That's a year ago. Sometime it comes on periodically for mins and turns off. This doesnt happen much either. So am good :)

  • @77gerry84

    Does it hurt do anything other than annoy you? mines been on for a little over a month and shifts in and out just fine.

    • @58_Powermaster
      @58_Powermaster  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +77gerry84 I'm quite certain it doesn't affect anything mechanically. My understanding of how the switch works is that the plunger is spring loaded and rides on a cam inside the transfer case so that it can indicate when you are in Part Time or 4 Low. If the Jeep was getting stuck in Part Time you would definitely know it as it will turn the front and rear at the same speed causing major drive train binding on dry or damp roads.

      Part-time as regular driving like in snow full time it locks all four wheels and it's meant for off-road in tough Terrain the last one high is meant for going up hills at very slow speed or getting out of a ditch

    • @knight896661
      @knight896661 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Full time 4 full time is for driving off road or in extremely shitty conditions or all the time it gives the front wheels less power than the rear and also the front wheels don't spin at the same time when turning... part time is for giving 50/50 to all 4 wheels giving grip to get out of sink holes and or climbing hills where 4full time can't and when you turn in 2 part time you will feel the tires jerking around the corner like binding up because it locks the front differential and all tires spin the same... full time is safe to drive all the time if you want do not ever drive in 4low or 4part time on unless you are stuck use 4 low and if you're trying to climb a hill part time would be ur best answer for shitty road conditions

    • @58_Powermaster
      @58_Powermaster  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't say for sure. I know this works on the WJ series of Jeep Grand Cherokees from 1999 to 2004. If that vehicle has indicator lights for the four wheel drive system I'd be inclined to believe it has a similar type of switch (sensor) but the mounting location could be completely different. Sorry if this isn't much help...I'm just a dig in and do it yourself (sometimes with the help of the internet) guy and don't want to give you the wrong info.

      could be a wiring issue. might be bad wires. my 04 GC Laredo has the check engine light on and it says the switch might be the issue or wiring issue. go the cheapest route first, cuz it might be something like a pinched wire.
      worst case scenario, gotta buy a whole new transfer case
