I regularly play in a 13th-century church in my region. This church has optimal acoustics, and my instruments sound so wonderful there - almost surreal. Unfortunately, due to the nearby highway, recording is not possible… So, I try to virtually simulate the sound of this church in the studio. Some of you have mentioned that I use too much reverb. However, it's not a product of imagination but rather an imitation of a real space. Please enjoy the carefully simulated sound of the 13th century church!
Far too many people have never been in a Medieval Church, so they wouldn't understand the acoustics of such a space unless they experienced it first hand. Sound "bounces" people, get over it!
Don’t know why, but closing my eyes and listening, while peaceful, the composition feels like releasing tiny pieces of sorrow and mourning, bit by bit. Not a cascade, but like I’m a pin cushion and am slowly having pins pulled out of me one by one letting me breathe again ever so gradually. Stillness full of peace and grace, but forcing me to face my ills in the most gentle way possible versus the avalanches that often wash over me with some music, crushing my breath. This one gives me permission to breathe again, a little at a time, but without forcing or coddling me. Just held, scars stroked, forgiveness whispered. Very beautiful, thank you for taking the time to patiently curate such a vibrant auditory experience with both instrument and architecture; time and space.
One of my aims is to create music for resilience. Of course, it's not so easy... What you describe shows that it actually works. I'm particularly pleased to hear that! Thanks!
@Skiduejrjkfflc Very beautifully said. I just found this channel now and already my breathing is more smooth and peaceful. I have a chronic tick-borne infection that is lingering and messing up my nervous system in a bunch of ways. With headphones, this is going right through me. I just, just found this but already it's like meditation. This is, I guess, a sound bath for my nervous system. I'll be interested to see how many others are reporting positive effects. Thank you for this!

This music is very beautiful. The tuning is beautiful. The sound and ambience is something we need so much today in the harsh aural environment in which most of us have to live. Thank you.
I just love this, Nao. I'm European and as a teen and 20 year old I studied in Japan, where I fell in love with the koto. It is beautiful to hear this lute and your 13th century church sound; I feel it gives the tranquillity we so need in these days. Play on!

Hi Nao I have recently become deeply interested in modal music and the fusion of western and what I term Eastern Mediterranean music. The epitome of this is heard in the work of Constantinople and in ensembles led by Ross Daly. The instrumentation often combines traditional instruments with baroque rather than renaissance tonalities. I had considered this as strange, because the baroque is further away from medieval times and sonorities. However, here you have solved the problem for me. The baroque lute was the result of experiments to optimise the resonances of the instrument and returned to the ‘open’ tuning in D minor. So akin to vielle and gittern, for example. You are playing a monophonic line with drones and sympathetic strings essentially, with meantone intervals. Perfect medieval sound then enhanced with the church acoustics. You are a clever musician. Thanks for enlightening me further with every performance. Martin
"Some of you have mentioned that I use too much reverb. However, it's not a product of imagination but rather an imitation of a real space."... You have, as always, captured the vital essence, of the frequencies we so need to hear. Keep spreading your positive energy, brother. Love and Light...

Wow, that was a lesson in music theory. That's fascinating. Sound and music have always affected me strongly. I'm listening to this song for the first time and I'm already feeling better.
