The X-Wing droup was always supposed to be Blue Group in the script and the novel. It was turned to red and red used as colors on the X-wings because blue would not show right with blue screen filming of the models. Marvel got it's version from the unrevised 4th dradt shooting script. Much like Vader drinking from a cup in earlier issues, Vader's helmet was supposed to be removable to eat and drink early on.
The Day after the Death Star was not a "comic strip" it was the UK Star Wars Weekly made by Marvel Comics. It had stories that were not in the US version. You should state this fact since most original Star Wars fans did not know a UK version differed slightly than the US version though the art was still done by Carmine Infantino and Gene Day.
I’ve got a few of those SW Weekly I love em. There was a SW newspaper strip drawn by Russ Manning and later Al Williamson. I believe the Manning run was the first time Boba Fett appeared in comic book form (predating SW 42). IDW did a good job collecting them into volumes, anyone who likes these original Marvel SW will probably like those too
I grew up with the original Marvel Comic Star Wars (1978+). They included creative stories and characters. What differs in todays Star Wars comics is the emphasis on graphic battle scenes not story or plot. Original Star Wars comics were focused on developing characters while today it is action and battle scenes. This also explains the reason why our "Star Geek" narrator finds today's Star Wars comics with more visuals and less text per page. This strategy in comic book making is also intentional. When you have no text to read you tend to not go back and re-read. Todays Star Wars comics are mostly visuals so readers go through them faster and buy multiple titles to fulfill their appetite for more Star Wars product. Marvel ends up profiting from this opportunistic strategy.
I think its generally true of a lot of modern comics. They seem to be trying to recreate the feeling of watching a movie, with more visual and less descriptive text. I feel like they aren’t using all the tools of the medium. Its a comic BOOK, not a comic film.
Great review, though you keep crediting the art to Carmine Infantino, when the artist for these issues was actually Howard Chaykin. Hope you do some more reviews of the original Marvel comic. The original stories, weird as they were, were where it really shined.
Wow - you're absolutely right. I can't believe that I missed that... I was just so wrapped up in some of the later issues when I made this video that I must have done it out of instinct. Thanks for the catch!
I think the reason Red Squadron is called Blue Squadron is because they were originally meant to be Blue Squadron but they were changed to red in the film to stand out from the blue screens in production. I don’t remember where I heard that nor do I know if it’s 100% accurate, so don’t quote me on that
Iv'e always wondered if the comics were worth reading but as another good guy and Star Wars nerd i can trust your opinion. just one nitpick though, there is no upside-down, right-side up, or sideways in space and i have seen plenty of drawings where the Deathstar is drawn like that.
They're definitely worth the read! And yes - the fact that the Death Star's orientation doesn't matter is very true - which is why I said in the FILM it's "right-side up" (The way that we know it to be).
They removed the earlier scenes with Biggs Darklighter because test audiences thought they were boring (like "American Graffiti in space"), and without those scenes to set up Luke and Biggs' friendship, they decided to cut the scene with Red Leader as well. It was still canon, though, since it appeared in the comic and (I believe) the novelization, and years later The Essential Guide to Warfare included a vignette where Dave Dreis, the future Red Leader, talks about the time he saw Anakin in action in the Clone Wars.
As for the special edition, I believe the film was corrupted, with a large black blip over the shot of Red Leader talking about Anakin. They cut down his dialog and digitally inserted a Rebel pilot walking in front of them to cover up the transition.
Darth Vader was identified as the Dark Lord of the Sith as early as the 1976 novelization. In fact, I believe the Emperor himself was NOT identified as a Sith until after The Phantom Menace came out, though he still knew about their teachings.
Dear star geek. I have ideas for following top tens: Top ten deleted scenes, top ten best characters of the prequel trilogy and top ten star wars intelligent species. Thank you very much.

i hope you have the next issue. I read these as a kid. loved them. had the big huge poster-board sized issue.
They call them treasury size, I had them too. Awesome comics

Disney should make a 3rd Star Wars Cartoon under the style of Marvel's first run on Star Wars.
Agreed and bring back Jax!
Great video, Star Geek! You should definitely make more of these!
Love the Marvel studios intro at the beginning
Thanks, André!
Red Squadron was changed because of blue screens.
I really appreciate these old school Star Wars comic videos 👍 👍 👍

Np. To be fair Infantino's art was what really defined the series later on.
I think the reason Red Squadron is called Blue Squadron is because they were originally meant to be Blue Squadron but they were changed to red in the film to stand out from the blue screens in production.

I've read the original novel, and the X-Wings were indeed in Blue Squadron in that.
Man these videos are so well done, it's amazing!
Thanks so much!
I have issue #4 with me. I thought it was the original one, but turns out to be republish version and still cool to have it with me.
FYI... Carmine Infantino had ZERO to do with this run until issue #11. These first issues were drawn by Howard Chaykin.
It's blue squadron because it was going to be but they changed it to red because they used a blue screen...
Now that you say it - I totally remember hearing about that. I can't believe it didn't cross my mind!
Also thanks star geek for being a good TH-camr/Star Wars fan so I can enjoy your videos today
I have the Star wars #4 cgc as an investment long term. These comics do very well over a decade or two
I wish you'd continued this series.

Awesome #starwars #marvel #veve
How come Red Leader saying he knew Luke's father was removed from the scene in the Ep4-SE?
They removed the earlier scenes with Biggs Darklighter because test audiences thought they were boring (like "American Graffiti in space"), and without those scenes to set up Luke and Biggs' friendship, they decided to cut the scene with Red Leader as well.

Imagine if this was drawn by jack kirby
It should have been
"By the immortal Gods of the Sith" So this would be the first mention of the sith then...
I had that first comic but my mums house burnt down years ago 😢
Are you gonna do more episodes of this
in the original scrip they called the x-wing group Blue Squadron
Found issue # 5 today
Buffet here does not have a silent T. :-P
When is is next video in this series coming out???
What is your 3 favourite Lord of the Rings villains?
Immortal gods of the SITH?! That word existed before the prequels?
Yep! It's in the original script for the first Star Wars.
Huh. Cool!
Darth Vader was identified as the Dark Lord of the Sith as early as the 1976 novelization. In fact, I believe the Emperor himself was NOT identified as a Sith until after The Phantom Menace came out, though he still knew about their teachings.

Are you worried about the possible over-saturation of Star Wars with new movies coming out every year, or do you think the more Star Wars, the better?
