Overland Africa in a Landrover - Kenya & Tanzania is Too Expensive to Travel

  • Habari! Coast to Coast in a Landrover, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean in just, err, 9 months ish? In this episode we reach Africa's east coast to drive through Kenya and Tanzania, probably the two most expensive countries we drove through on our entire Overland Africa journey.
The first African country we drove to in our good old British landrover defender TDI was Morocco, from there we drove down the Atlantic Coast to Mauritania and then it was time to head east across the Sahara. In the last episode we had successfully crossed the Sahara and reached Ethiopia, and now it was time to finally be re-united with the ocean as we head for the Indian Ocean.
It seems that the Somali Bandits however had other ideas, and to get there we still had to join another military convoy on leaving Ethiopia to get through to Marsabit in Kenya, and after a days rest and restock in Nairobi they struck again, this time in Mombasa scuppering our plans to visit the Kenyan coastal town, so instead we headed further south for a full 2 weeks of R&R before continuing our overland journey heading into Tanzania.
Of course East Africa is famous for their Safaris and both countries, Kenya and Tanzania, have some very famous Game Parks, however it has to be said they are not designed for self drive tourists such as ourselves...
    Land Rover Africa Overland
    --------------------------------------------
Twenty years ago my wife and I packed up our life in the UK and set off to drive overland in our Land Rover Defender with the aim of driving all the way to the Cape Town in South Africa, a journey which will take us from coast to coast along the length and breadth of Africa.
Because this journey was twenty years ago, there were no smartphones, no google maps, and no digital cameras. The photos taken on the journey were on transparencies, designed to be projected. In previous videos I have took photographs of some of those slides for the purpose of showing in the video, however unfortunately the photos from Kenya onwards were stolen from our vehicle later on our epic journey, so no photos in this video, sorry!

Italy never colonised Ethiopia. They tried and were defeated. The British helped the Ethiopians defeat the Italians.

Interesting story. Amazing to see how things have changed. Right now going to marsabit, all the way to ethiopia is a breeze. Its easy to forget how terrible the road and the security was back in the day.

Very true. This is his first video am watching and I was wondering when he did his trip. For one, Lake Turkana is very accessible right now and quite beautiful. I know of a family that did a self-drive tour there last year. I was at Archer's Post and the road to Moyale is absolutely great

That entire experience must have been ages ago. None of those things are recent. The northern frontier of Kenya isa chill breeze and safe. The coast is even safer.

Dude, you have said quite some negative things about Kenya and Tanzania, what insecurity are you talking about? The parks in Kenya are very affordable. Shame on you

You seem to be talking about the negative stories about Kenya only. The road between Moyale and Nairobi is tarmaced and dope. Not sure why you're saying it is gravel.

Negative video... especially about kenya... when were you in kenya? Because this information is so much outdated... the kenya you are talking about is 90s and early 2000s
