Wow. This is so simple, yet so interesting to me. I’d always try to write anything and everything in one journal, but I could never stick with it because all my thoughts were disorganized/random and my perfectionist nature would kick in. Seeing someone else organize their thoughts so meticulously in many different commonplace books is quite fascinating to me in this day and age where technology has taken over and we scroll more on social media than take time to write down and reflect what we have learned (at least for me). 😅 Thanks for sharing!
My mother wrote event down on pieces of paper , left them all over the house and in books. When she died as they were found we put them in stacks as to who they were about and gave to each of us girls. It would be nice to gather them all and make a common place book.

I've been playing with the idea keeping a commonplace book where I gather some thought-out ideas, arguments, and quotes, and finding a place for it on my coffee table for friends and family to freely read. It's purpose is not only for my circle to get to know me deeper, but to also share my thought-provoking experiences and hopefully spark some meaningful conversations. I see this opening the door for me to be challenged and at the same time get to know the reader better.
That's a great idea. I'd love to see something like that in a friend's house. I always look at the books on people's shelves, but this would provide much deeper insight into a person. You've inspired me to be a little more open with my commonplace books and essays, too. (I've always been very reluctant to put my ideas out there, but of course that's such an important step in getting feedback and improving myself and my thinking.)
I journal in two notebooks everyday: one for reflecting on my actions and the events during a day and one for expanding on general ideas I have or read about. This video inspired me to separate my journal of general ideas into two or maybe more commonplace books and perhaps even start more on other nonfiction genres. Great video man.
I do like the idea option more than the quotes. Watching this really makes me wish I had written stuff down. So many good thoughts and ideas start to become forgotten or skewed over time. I think the quote option is less practical for me, but I see the benefit.
I think I'm more of a absorber than creator/thinker, so I think it would benefit me to create a quotes/compendium where I can ruminate on, and hopefully branch out to my own ideas as I start to form my own opinions on things.
That's how I started. Great idea. It's a really cool feeling when you start transitioning to a creator/thinker after spending the time wrestling with absorbing lots of stuff

These are awesome! Thanks for the ideas, now I get to add more notebooks to my collection. Gotta figure how to tell my wife... maybe I'll make a commonplace book of excuses
This video alone got me to subscribe. Truly enjoyed it and need more of these! I’ve always been drawn more towards analog methods of learning, writing, etc. and thought I was alone when I had several different notebooks for several different things lol. Every time I try to put them into one book, I get stumped and need to separate them again. Glad to know I’m not flying solo with compartmentalizing commonplace books!
I’m new to this, so I’m going to start with a meld of the two: quotes and ideas. I will divide it into subject matter, like theology of incarnation, stoicism, Buddhism, democracy. Once I get into the habit, I’ll see what works, but having one place/subject seems like a good way to start.
Thanks for this video. Well done. I have struggled with conceptualizing what I was doing. I use little books for various things and never thought of organizing like you have here. Thanks for educating me.
I have been playing with the idea of using a Commonplace Book for my work and have purchased several, but I have spent some time watching TH-cam videos on how to best use them. I have found your video to be very helpful. Thank you.
I've only just discovered commonplace books (as a formal term) recently, although I've kept what more or less amounts to them for decades. For the longest time they largely consisted of quotes, story ideas (for the fiction I write), and overheard snippets of conversations, which also tend to find their way into stories. (People say the darndest things...!) I've also tended to keep other notebooks and computer files for things that are like what you describe here, but I do want to try to consolidate things into more traditional commonplace books. I also want to start an analog Zettelkasten but that's a whole other project!
I'm so happy I found your channel. You got my attention talking about notebooks and deep thoughts on different topics. I have a thing for notebooks to record my thoughts, ideas, genealogical research... I have been keeping lovely notebooks for many years. I didn't know there are others out there who love to do the same. Your videos are helping me focus my use and purpose of my notebooks, and making me feel more comfortable with my need to record important things in them for me and future readers. Thank you!
Just found your channel and am really loving the content. Havent been successful with personal note-taking/journaling in the past and am looking forward to trying your method. Thanks for taking the tiime to share!
[From the UK, May 2023] What a fabulous start to your channel sir! 👍🏽👍🏽 I've subscribed now because: i) This video is excellent, and exactly what I was looking for (sure - credit the algorithm, but it still put your video my way in my searches relating to commonplace books and pens) ii) I'm liking your channel blurb - which means that your future content is likely to be right up my street!
All of my notebooks are grid-paper. I like them not only for the smaller lines, and ability to neatly line and organize material, but also because I can write bi-directionally on lines. Especially in the margins... As a side-note, and I like how you describe the work they are for, but I have always described them as a "sounding-board." I constantly scratch and make notes as a Sisyphean task in working out problems... Glad you have this channel.
I have just subscribed. l never really knew the meaning of a common place book and you described it in such an uncomplicated way! Thank you! (from London) x
I'm currently in the process of converting my common place books/journals/bullet journal type of thing I've going on into a digital resource to be able to find quotes more often and read through them when I want something to think about on my commutes. So nice to see a channel sharing about common place books!
I have only really started having a note "system", but it starts with the small a6 notebooks gathering everything, from TODO's, measurements, journalling etc. Then I transfer these over to a "Collation" book, each entry being labeled with an icon or icons to indicate its context. The next step after this will eventually be to place these in relevant note books, which ties into the commonplace idea.
I came into knowledge of commonplace books years (maybe decades?) ago. I loved the idea then (even bought Ryder’s book), but I’m ready to embrace it now. I think your channel will give me the boost I need in this endeavor. Great content! Oh, and - Yes! Someone who knows the correct pronunciation of 8:11 Moleskine! 👋🏽
Common place book : previously used to collecting quotes Compendium : concise information of any feild which include quotes proverbs and arguments Mainly used to reflect and become expert as subject. Common place for ideas : here you can journal and write your own thoughts on idea. Also known as park external mind Second way to use is silloluqes. Its a way to talk to yourself and figure out who you are

Such a good question! I have a catch all daily carry that I didn't go over yet. I can bring that with me to catch all my thoughts and distribute them in greater detail in the right commonplace book later on. So there are just sketches of thoughts in the catch-all. Just enough to remind me later
I started like you and while studying minimalism I decided to cut down to one book. Which can at times be annoying. I’m a huge leuchtturm1917 fan and thanks to you a murdy fan as well. I’m a huge journaled now. I use it to store quotes save information I abortions. My thoughts and ideas. Content ideas as a writer. I too like to practice philosophy and would like to be wise one day. Journaling saved my life after my stroke. Kept men ideas and emotions tight.
👍🏽🇬🇧 September 2023 Ha! My Commonplace book became so sprawling, and I was so fussy about the paper being spot-on for fountain-pen use - that I simply use a 'nice' A4 four-ring binder, with Oxford 'Optik' paper. Myriad sections - such as ideas for SubStack posts, ideas for books to write, random personal philosopy/epiphanies, notes on books I've read/book reviews - and of course quotations and others' thoughts.
I tryed to keep bullet journal multiple time but fall evry time, i like your idea about comonplace book so i grab my little notebook and started writing most important wisdom quotes i know i also started to write syllabus or how ever it is speeled in thet notebook, i started carrying notebook with me all time
"Luddite techo-philosopher." Man, can I relate to that one. Just found your channel last night trying to find leather covers for my notebooks. I've read about 50 books over the last couple of years, which has been a record for me, and I wish I would have have the idea of having a specific notebook for quotes. I have my longer poetry and philosophy notebook, but I've also been writing some sci-fi stories and ideas ther. Also have a small notebook for shorter thoughts and for comedic/absurd observations. I think I'm gonna start keeping a "compendium" for all of the quotes. Great stuff man. Glad I found this channel.
I'd love to have separate books for quotes coming from different sources, but since I don't have the space, I keep them all in one book, but color code them instead. This way, I immediately know what kind of quote it is. And I actually kind of like how it ended up looking.
Color coding is something I haven't tried much except with the colors of my leather covers. I may need to start incorporating more colors. Sounds like a great solution for you! Thanks.
I use color coding within entries to help highlight different levels of information. I write summaries and key terms in green ink to make it pop out a bit more. The rest of the entry is done in brown or black, whichever I have on hand. Underlining or boxing terms clutters up the page a bit too much for me, and I find this easier to process visually.
Very interesting video! I love documenting my thoughts, things I learn, thing I do. I do this in a notes app on my laptop with different tabs for various topics. I agree with your outlined advantages of paper vs digital. The risk of distraction is there and physically writing is a different experience to typing. Personally, I would hold back if I used a physical notebook. There are some things I want to document in my notebooks that I don't want anyone else to read.
Very cool video brother. I've never heard of a commonplace book until now, but it seems like a very useful way to pass wisdom/experiences onto your kids and future generations. Could you share the purchase links to some of the books you own, so I can see whether I'd like to buy the same ones? Thanks!
I love the idea of separate commonplace books for the purposes you described. Also I would actually love a philosophical video on why people love villains 😅 I do too! But why is that? Does it speak to any villainy in me? Are they a mirror to the darker parts of our psyche? I guess I should also write a soliloquy about it 🤔
I have specific social media accounts I use just like this. How did I never think of having a dedicated book for this? I am 100% absolutely going to start with this. Need a good notebook to use for it though....
I thought about starting a commonplace book in my Franklin Planner (has rings). I still might. I could use the alphabet tabs meant for phone numbers/addresses to reference different topis. I'm about to drown in planners so no telling which one/s will become my commonplace book.
Thanks for your sharing. It is very helpful! I can preparing different note books for different topics, instead of 1 book for all topics. I also like physical notebook, however I have a question though, in your perspective, what is the main advantage of physical notebook vs digital notebook?
Studies have shown that writing information down aids in retention far more than simply typing it. I think that's the biggest advantage. I've also found that I'm more likely to go over my notes if they're in a physical book, although I don't know how common that is. Maybe it's that I associate my phone and computer with so many other things (TH-cam, email, text messages, etc.) while my notebook is just for notes. Maybe it's that I prefer to flip through pages rather than scroll through a digital document or a list of files.
This is something I'm definitely going to implement. Just one question. How do you index the books ?. With a book for research I would think this essential. Absolutely loving your channel by the way.
What i struggle with when using a commonplace book is the table of contents and the index. Do you reference things by category, first word, first letter, author, or by another method? How are you able to find anything again, especially when you have filled three or four noteboks?
I go by topic and I fill out the index after the book is done, I bet you're probably doing that too though. I've tried to fill it out before and it's always a complete mess
Man I wish I knew about this when I was studying for my bachelor in Philosophy. Always wrote quotes and notes on different notebooks (depending on what I was studying), pretty messed up and chaotic...
Have you thought about starting a commonplace blog? You could post (non-sensitive, i.e. non-personal) thoughts and others might reflect on them in the comments. It would be a good way to gain new perspectives.
Dang it. That's such a great idea. I've thought about sharing stuff from my pocket notebooks, like half done ideas and arguments. This is better. I may just do it on my old blog or new substack. My substack kind of is this already but your idea is really good. Wow!
@@ParkerNotes Thanks, I'm happy you like it. I got this idea from Alexander Pruss's Blog ( alexanderpruss.blogspot.com/ ). I don't think he calls his blog a commonplace blog, but as I was listening to your video, I got the impression that it's like some of the blog posts I've read on his blog ("some," because I haven't read all of his blog posts, so what I say may not be true to about all of his entries). They seem to be little nuggets of reflection, which is I think what you're aiming at with your commonplace book.
Great video. My issue with a commonplace book is in organizing it…how do you FIND things in it specifically? Do you create an index of some sort? If so, how do you work that index?
What you Call *"Common Place Quotes"* ..we Call *"IdeaCaches"* A safe place for Personal introspections, Ideas, Quotes , thoughts, creative Aha momments etc
but how do you find things again ? in those many books … I am still debating 🤔🤨🤷🏻♀️ if I need different ones for different topics or if I will just use one 🤷🏻♀️
I’ve been trying to learn more about a second brain, using technology, like obsidian, which is a form of common place notes that can link to one another. What would you say are the pros and cons as you compare this physical commonplace book and a digital commonplace book?
I like your idea of a commonplace book dedicated to a topic that you want to learn more about. I already keep a book of quotes that feature’s handwriting improvement with different fountain pens and inks. I will start a commonplace book for ideas I find interesting and want to develop my own thinking. Thanks!
6:45-the concept of Yin-Yang imported to West has gotten absorbed into the abrahamic view of duality that is good and evil, sin and virtue, and though New Age take the idea, they tend to fixate upon the idea of Enlightenment much like a defacto stand in for the Heavens. But Yin and Yang as it comes for the eastern traditional is not morally focus but rather a way of thought about what composes and constitutes the Universe. If one takes a word from Thanos-"balance". Since you seem to be interested in villians-consider reading One Punch Man, particularly the Garou arc. I think you might find the manga series entertaining but perhaps you might find something more within it. Who knows? Raw gems are often found away from a store display.
@@ParkerNotes Awesome, if you like that maybe you'll enjoy Boku No Hero Academic as a Japanese take on the American superhero concept. Perhaps you'll enjoy that too as it uses Superheros and the concept to explore what the playwright Bernard Evslin describes within the preface of his "Heroes, Gods and Monsters of the Greek Myth" of how monsters generally arise from some malfeasance or turmoil within the family sphere or structure. (What is the Greek parthenon if not a giant family of interrelated deities?) And most societies around the world, whether it be Western or Eastern, under Confucianism, Freud, or etc. tend to posit the family as a fundamental part or unit within the makings of the larger society.
I like to keep one subject per CP book. But I know others don't. Probably just personal preference but I really like compartmentalizing the ideas so I can get in the right head space when I'm looking them over
Oooo I found it for you! Can't believe they still have it. I bought this one in 2014! Here's the link: www.barnesandnoble.com/w/tree-embossed-brown-italian-leather-lined-journal-with-bead-6x8-barnes-noble/1121662755?ean=9781616855376
What do you call a note book that has your thoughts, ideas, experiences, stories, quotes, tasks, to-do's, reminders, dream sequences, plans etc all in one book? And is that an OK idea?
But how good is this for carrying? I mean do you have maybe a digital system where you can write anywhere? or how do you find your thoughts later? do you have sort of like an index where you can come by an revisit what you wrote and know what you were talking about? what if I can't carry my notebook and pen and I wanna write??
I carry a pocket notebook everywhere with me and I take little notes which I can then elaborate on in my commonplace books. I'm going to do a video on it as well
Is valid to say that you want to disagree, so you learn things against a topic and things on favor of that topic. IS not better to first learn the pros and cons, then later take a position?
Probably depends on the case right? You don't want to go quote mine in favor or confirming preconceived notions or biases but also it's okay to say "I know Hitler was wrong, let's go see just how wrong he was"
Since you brought up Gaston lol Beauty and the Beast logic: Young girl falling in romantic love with literal animal = good Man risking life and limb to save said girl from monster = bad American fairy tales are pretty weird man. Remind me, how is Gaston the villain?
Since when is a French fairy tale American? Gaston is only bad because of what he does before anyone knows the beast even exists. He’s not quite a ‘villain’, he’s just a bit dumb and doesn’t care about other people. He would have been fine if his friends had just told him “guess what, you’re not the center of the world and also that girl obviously doesn’t like you”.
@@emmanarotzky6565 Fair point. I should have said "western fairy tales." Thanks for the correction. And yeah, he's certainly not a role model of masculinity or human decency, but at least on the outside he tried to save Belle.
@@ParkerNotes Probably right, but it’s a cost benefit analysis: I can type at 100 WPM, and while I may not remember as well, it seems like I’ll remember enough. Maybe I’m wrong! But I’m a minimalist; I want to be as efficient as possible with my time. I can make up for some of the loss in memory by reviewing the notes regularly for a month, say. Readwise and Obsidian make this very powerful with backlinks, tagging, etc. I can research topics in a breeze. Have you tried the digital route?

That's how I started. Great idea. It's a really cool feeling when you start transitioning to a creator/thinker after spending the time wrestling with absorbing lots of stuff
clicked for commonplace advice. subscribed for mustache. i got different notebooks
1- goals ( i write my weekly, monthly and annual goals)
2- business ideas
3- FTD (fool things i have done: i write what i did wrong and try to improve on that)
4- quotes
5- things i need to learn or want to learn
6- people i want to meet ( most of them are in US and 80% are professors)
7- action plan
8- checklist ( notepad rhodia)
9- curosity: questions i want to ask
10- daily journal
superb notebook cover too. share their link.
LOVE the FTD concept
@@karenmyrie6215 thanks. I got it from dale carnegie's book. How to stop worrying and start living. I quit smoking. Lost weight (was almost a diabetic). Did a lot of things . Just because of this habit

Haha I'm with you! There are dozens of us lol not too many but at least a dozen... there's gotta be 😅
I’m new to this, so I’m going to start with a meld of the two: quotes and ideas. I will divide it into subject matter, like theology of incarnation, stoicism, Buddhism, democracy. Once I get into the habit, I’ll see what works, but having one place/subject seems like a good way to start.
Sounds good! When you catch yhe bug it's a crazy ride!
Thank you!
I absolutely love your work, sir. I have just started turning my jumbled notebooks into commonplace books and your videos have been immensely helpful.
This is super encouraging bro! Thanks for sharing this with me. I think you'll appreciate some of the videos and ideas I'm working on
Love the idea of commonplace book for quotes. Please share the covers, they are gorgeous.
Just found your channel and am really loving the content. Havent been successful with personal note-taking/journaling in the past and am looking forward to trying your method. Thanks for taking the tiime to share!
Thanks for the comment! I have a ton of different styles of note taking and notebook ideas coming your way soon!

What a fabulous start to your channel sir! 👍🏽👍🏽
I've subscribed now because:
i) This video is excellent, and exactly what I was looking for (sure - credit the algorithm, but it still put your video my way in my searches relating to commonplace books and pens)
ii) I'm liking your channel blurb - which means that your future content is likely to be right up my street!
Awesome! So glad I could help thanks for subscribing, hopefully we can learn a lot more together
I'm currently in the process of converting my common place books/journals/bullet journal type of thing I've going on into a digital resource to be able to find quotes more often and read through them when I want something to think about on my commutes. So nice to see a channel sharing about common place books!
journal is truly something valuable to pass down to the next generation.
Easily my favorite TH-cam channel.
I'm screenshotting this for a rainy day! Thank you!
Outstanding. I am going to do a straightforward copy of the system you outlined here. Best wishes & thanks for the idea.
Amazing! I'm pumped for you! Glad to help
Thank you for the ideas! Congrats on your new channel!
Common place book : previously used to collecting quotes
Compendium : concise information of any feild which include quotes proverbs and arguments
Mainly used to reflect and become expert as subject.
Common place for ideas : here you can journal and write your own thoughts on idea.
Also known as park external mind
Second way to use is silloluqes. Its a way to talk to yourself and figure out who you are
After watching your video i started comonolace book for importqn thoughts quotes and idea, 5 day later i find my small notebook ooen it and find quotes ideas etc and remember i was doing this years ago but for some reason stop, life get in the wey i was on collage back then
Do you twirl your mustache while pondering your love for villains? I imagine you do! Love what you do and who you are becoming. Keep up the hard work. 🤔📚🌍
Haha I do 😅😅 and thank you so much!
The fine line between cyberpunk and hobbit is one I've been trying to straddle for a long time and still haven't figured out, I totally get this. 😂
I love your content and have learned so much, Thank you! Please tell us where we can purchase the last book cover you showed in this video, It rings all of my bells. ❤
I love the idea of different commonplace books for different things, but what do you do when you travel? Bring them all?! That is always my conundrum!
Such a good question! I have a catch all daily carry that I didn't go over yet. I can bring that with me to catch all my thoughts and distribute them in greater detail in the right commonplace book later on. So there are just sketches of thoughts in the catch-all. Just enough to remind me later
@@ParkerNotes Great! Thanks!
Your mind is for creation not for storing. Going to apply this commonplace method to my daily life!

Ha!
The bookshelf behind you:❤
I'd love to have separate books for quotes coming from different sources, but since I don't have the space, I keep them all in one book, but color code them instead.
Thanks!
I want to have a journal where I track all of my questions. I tend to write them in the books themselves but losing track of the later…
So good. I do this with my pocket journals. Gonna make a vid on that soon
Check the description for my affiliates. There are a few discounts for my audience members 💪
i’m trying out a ring binder in a personal size for portability then maybe i can sort them out later.
I thought about starting a commonplace book in my Franklin Planner (has rings). I still might. I could use the alphabet tabs meant for phone numbers/addresses to reference different topis. I'm about to drown in planners so no telling which one/s will become my commonplace book.
Hey man! did you make a video when you talk about the history of Common Place books and Conpendiums and books that were written about them. Thank You!
could you talk about which notebooks do you use and same regarding the leather covers?
I think the links should be in the description
Thanks for your sharing. It is very helpful! I can preparing different note books for different topics, instead of 1 book for all topics. I also like physical notebook, however I have a question though, in your perspective, what is the main advantage of physical notebook vs digital notebook?
Ah, i watched your another video, you indirectly answer my question. thanks. This one - th-cam.com/video/f_MddQW3U5E/w-d-xo.htmlsi=UA8I2q3mz7rKAlPr
Thanks for your insight. I also feel writing on paper is more helpful.
What brand journal do you like the best?
Leuctturm1917 definitely
@@ParkerNotes What about the leather part?
Bravo!! I think my first commonplace book should be all the questions I have, lol! Do you have a commonplace book for any of your bible studies?
Yep, my ministry commonplace book 😅
Man I wish I knew about this when I was studying for my bachelor in Philosophy. Always wrote quotes and notes on different notebooks (depending on what I was studying), pretty messed up and chaotic...
Been there!!
Wow!

Thanks, I'm happy you like it.
Direct response marketing commonplace book
Great video. My issue with a commonplace book is in organizing it…how do you FIND things in it specifically? Do you create an index of some sort? If so, how do you work that index?

Thanks for this! I'll check out One Punch Man!
(What is the Greek parthenon if not a giant family of interrelated deities?)
And most societies around the world, whether it be Western or Eastern, under Confucianism, Freud, or etc. tend to posit the family as a fundamental part or unit within the makings of the larger society.

Is valid to say that you want to disagree, so you learn things against a topic and things on favor of that topic. IS not better to first learn the pros and cons, then later take a position?

Since when is a French fairy tale American? Gaston is only bad because of what he does before anyone knows the beast even exists. If you want to not remember as well then for sure
@@ParkerNotes Probably right, but it’s a cost benefit analysis: I can type at 100 WPM, and while I may not remember as well, it seems like I’ll remember enough. Maybe I’m wrong!
