    I watched this video a couple years ago thinking not much of this. One day in General Mechanics last year, while the teacher was cleaning out the shop, he found an old Sony VCR with THE SAME PROBLEM. The arm was stiff and it was eating the tapes. I took off the top and everyone thought I was crazy to be messing with that thing, but I fixed it, until I plugged it into a tv and found that the whole mechanism was jerky. I didn't need another mono VCR, so I junked it. It was fun though.

    Yea..I knew about the "swing arm" problem on these for years but I just learned the hard about the left loading arm gear problem!! It's a pain in the ass to change but can be done..Just did my first one :-)

    Extremely helpful video! Thanks to you, we turned our Sony SLV-R1000 from a boat anchor into a useful component once again. Another clue that the arm is stuck is that the counter does not function. Odd design flaw for such an expensive component. Either the lube Sony used failed or some type of corrosion took place. Thanks for posting your video!

    Very interesting video! Some notes: first, after lubricating the arm, you need to realign it as otherwise it will damage the tape.Another problem with these Sony VHS, is that the worm gear for the cassette carriage gets cracked and prevents loading/ unloading a tape. One cure is to glue the gear to the motor shaft.Another familiar problem is the mode switch goes bad (It can be cleaned by disassembly).Capacitors in the power supply and the servo are also common problems.

    If looking for a VCR to playback old VHS cassettes, I would suggest the later VCR units, the basic models with least controls and basic 2 video heads. Perhaps JVC units would be the better choice. A remote is not really needed. These later VCR made after 2000 had a more robust design because of mechanical improvements. The Achilles's heel are the failing capacitors, so keep the unit unplugged when not in use. These will use rubber belts which should still be in good condition. Most youtube videos talk about high end VCRs, many of which are very old and have been used intensively, a gambling.

    I have the SLV-575UC model released in 1990 I believe and I had the same problem as you did. You're video instructions helped me solve the exact problem. I just cleaned it with some Isopropyl alcohol and it fixed it. The only other problem I seem to be having is I'm not getting Hifi Sound just seems to be in Stereo sound when playing a Hifi Tape. I can hear it trying to kick in but that's about it.

    Thank you very much for this video, especially for mentioning that it requires a 4.5mm socket to unscrew the nut on top of the arm. I was able to use the information to fix my old SLV-676UC VCR. On problem that remains however is that it will not rewind anymore. It makes all the right noises, sounds like it starts rewinding, but the left wheel does not turn. I don’t see any broken gears, so not sure what the issue would be. I am wondering where I could find information to help me find the cause and a solution... Any ideas?
    EDIT: I found that there was a gear that was suppose to be able to go up and down. It was sticking, so I added some silicone spray to it and it seems to have resolved the problem.

    I own A SONY SLV N750 that eats tapes only when in fast forward or rewind mode [and usually occuring near the end of the tape]. It plays and records OK however.
    Would the arm shown in the video be implicated in this specific type of tape-eating problem? What impact does a bad idler tire have [if any] on this type of problem?

    I have two Sony VCRs; different models but I'm 99% sure they have the same insides. Both have failed in the exact same way! Basically any tape I insert gets ejected while still pulled out; it's like the spindle isn't pulling enough tape back into the cassette before ejecting. It also makes a really loud whirring noise; much louder than it should be. Is this a common issue on later Sony VCRs?

GOES AWAY. TAKE SOME VET AND PUT IT AGAIN ON THE METAL PLATE. OURE THE MACHINE HAS MORE TRUBLE TO GET THE TAPE OUT. AND THE TAPE HAS PROBLEMS GOING IN ANY DIRECTION.

    i have a problem that sometimes happens with my sony slv-760hf. pressing play during fast forward or rewind causes the tape to stop and the machine to display an error message on the lcd. with the case open nothing looks strange. if i turn it off and back on the head spins and i hear a motor sound from somewhere else inside for a few seconds then it stops and shows the error message again. it reads 1L 11 bc usually. if i leave it unplugged for ~12+ hours it usually works when i plug it back in. its hard to figure out what the problem is because when it happens i cant get the tape out. when it starts working again nothing looks wrong and the vcr functions well otherwise. pretty frustrating.

    • @AndroOnly
      @AndroOnly 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Chris Artell I have the same problem with my parents' Sony SLV-E820. Especially when I try to wind the tape (without playing it before) and then press _STOP_ , the VCR stops working and shows the error codes 1L 22 AA, 2L 22 AA, 3L 10 cc, 3L 11 Ac, 3L 11 bc and 3L 11 7c. When the recorder shows one of these error codes, I can hear a motor inside the device; it sounds like it's spinning. The only way to use the recorder again or even to get the cassette out is to wait 15 minutes. I can't open the VCR now because, as I mentioned before, it belongs to my parents who don't want it to be repaired... But if you or anybody finds a solution for this problem, I'd be very interested in it!

    I have a problem with a VCR of mine. It's not a sony one but maybe you could offer some insight. It's quite a modern model, bought new in the early 2000's. It thinks that you are always trying to insert a tape, resulting in it trying to pull in a non-existant cassette. It fails to do this as a real cassette would release a clip to allow the loading mech to move. I'm just wondering what I should look for in regards to a sensor to detect a tape load, I cant see anything obvious. Thankyou

    I have a tape stuck in a Sony SLV-975HF. Is there a manual way to move the entire mechanism so I can pull out the tape. (I want to save the tape. I'm not so concerned about the vcr- but would like to try to fix it). Is there a worm gear or gear I can turn by hand to make the whole mechanism retract properly?

    Great video and thanks for sharing it. Hopefully you are still monitoring these comments as I'm having the same issue where the grease in the arm has hardened and spring can no longer pull the arm back. My question is after the 4.5mm nut and washer is removed what do you do with the spring? I don't want to lift the arm and stretch the spring or does the spring and arm slide up off the pivot pin as an assembly? If not any details on what to do with the spring? Thank you.

    I have a Sony VCR SLV-700HF, it is not allowing me to input a vhs tape into the tray, the vhs goes all the way in but the tray doesn’t load and accept it, so the vhs tape basically stays in the front of the tray with about half an inch sticking out of the tray.
