      Exactly, few know this. I always give the props to the groove creators, over the players any day. Dave brought a different playing style and some new embellishment tho. But Chad's groove choice influenced me more than anything Dave done, which was all to common anyway for those actually viewing and supporting local band gigs at that time.

      I was gonna clarify that these were written by Chad, not by Dave, you could have quoted Scentless apprentice, to me one of the best from Dave.

    Don’t wanna be that guy but Chad Channing came up with this drum beat. Dave Grohl has even said as much. But he’s still an amazing drummer.

      Yes, Chad Channing came up with the beat, but Dave perfected it. He made the bass drum sound like a melodic heartbeat where Chad was just single noting it throughout the song.

    “An expert composer of song parts.” Perfectly expressed, my man. That’s the MUSICIAN part of being a drummer. People focus way too much on the technique part. The true greats have both in equal measure and in huge measures. And Grohl is sure as shit great.
    Also, damn. The sound. Butch Vig. Hallelujah.

    First I just discovered this channel and now i'm down a rabbit hole of watching a bunch of your videos (thank you TH-cam algorithm).
    Second I'm glad someone was able to say what I was thinking about Dave Grohl. He's able to almost have a melody with the drums and you can easily pick out where the song is based on the drums. It's a talent that not a lot drummers have.

      Im a drummer from finland and there is this progressive rock band called kingston wall which is really underrated and not many people know of them because they came from finland and the band was born in the late 80’s. But they have an AMAZING drummer, Sami Kuoppamäki. It would bring a international view to your reactions. And if you are brave enough to react to this band and of course the drummer i would suggest a song called another piece of cake! Love ur vids

    • @Gitfiddle
      @Gitfiddle 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Daniel C I also love Prince and Genesis / Phil Collins. I was just making the point that the way those 2 artists recorded their drums changed the industry. Those albums from the 80’s sounded great. It was just different.

    • @Gitfiddle
      @Gitfiddle 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jay McDanieL I believe Prince recorded an actual snare hit from an acoustic drum set. Then he reversed it and put a noise gate on it and added reverb and turned it into a sample. That’s how he got that kind of mushy synthetic snare sound you hear on Little Red Corvette for example. Phil Collins uses a noise gate, heavy compression, and reverb. Please keep in mind I am NOT a sound engineer. This is just some crazy music fan dude that’s explaining what’s he’s heard in interviews and by using my own ears. Cheers!!!

    I graduated in '92. I started playing the drums around '90-'91when grunge came around and Nirvana took over and completely changed the music scene(rescued it...lol) Dave Grohl has perfect metronome timing!!!. He taught me ALOT on timing and control. Now the foo-fighters are still putting out new incredible music!!!!. Dave is a talented well versed in all aspects of music. In my opinion one of the greatest musicians as well as his drumming!!!!.🤘🤘👍👍. Thx steve!!.love your vids👏👏.

    • @sword-and-shield
      @sword-and-shield 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The whole Seattle Scene changed the music scene, not Nirvana. For those living off MTV it probably seemed that way. For those going to and supporting local band gigs it was clearly not a one band effort. Not to mention Dave's drumming ability was common and average at that time, in context to the entire scene, and Dave will be the first to admit it, then, probably not now. After his first FF LP I stopped listening because he went to commercial, which was a shame...to me.

    I think other fans on here may have already cleared up this point, but Chad Channing was actually the one who wrote that iconic tom fill on "In Bloom". Check out Nirvana's introduction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Because he's such a humble, cool human being, he straight up credited Chad for coming up with "cha cha du duku duku!!". I never knew that til that moment. But it doesn't change the fact that he is a master at crafting awesome drumming for songs. "In Utero" has some of the most amazing drumming I've ever come across. And Dave also influenced me to say "fuck it" and teach myself drums at 31, and join a band. I will always be grateful to him for that influence. Rock out you dirty mothers!

    As far as I know, all the drum parts for "nevermind"
    were composed (and recorded in some early demos) by Chad Channing;
    Dave Grohl, on that album, just played it exactly the way were created by Chad
    (I think Dave explained this in some interviews, if I remember correctly).

    The drum parts on Bleach were created by Chad Channing (nirvana)and Dale Crover of Melvins. Nirvana recorded with Butch Vig in Madison, Wisconsin early Nevermind demos in 1990 with Channing on drums. Grohl is the best drummer they ever had but he gave props to Chad Channing for creating the In Bloom hook in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction.

    I'm pretty much a guitar player but in high school, me and a couple of friends went to the music class room and we decided to play this song for the hell of it. I decided to try the drums for the first time and I did better than expected and we were pretty surprised on how we sounded for a couple of 16-17 year olds.

    Steve, it seems we grew up in exactly the same scene. And it was actually our drummer that introduced us to Nirvana. One week after Nevermind was released in Australia he came to my place with a copy of the album and said "You've gotta hear this new band". And just like you we were blown away. At the time we felt it was like metal and punk had a love child.

    As much as people like to give shit to nirvana, they are and always will be my favorite band of all time. They were my jumping off point to all the other styles of rock and later metal that I love today. A lot of people like to say it’s too simple but I think that was the beauty of it and Dave on drums was just a part of it. I’m a bassist so these videos have been really cool for me to watch and see it from a different perspective since bass and drums are so intertwined. Love the channel man.

    I have found that most drummers in 3 piece bands do that special kind of composition you are talking about, more often than drummers in huge bands who might just play square backbeats. I’m not saying all do but when you think of a 3 piece band, the drummer has the opportunity to put his stamp on the song without over playing because there is space to fill... generally the sound from a 3 piece can lack something. I found myself being way more involved with the writing process when playing in a 3 piece punk/pop band similar to Green Day. (Old Green Day) Great video Sir!! A lot of people can learn from this one!

    The drums WERE PROCESSED a lot actually. They were definitely gated. Snare was gated to death and it was only realeased when there were fills. The snare sound was a combination of grohls second to none acuraccy hit consitency, reverb of the Room the artificial one and Andy Wallace (mix engineer) even used samples for the gunshot effect. Not as processed as 80’s but still processed quite a Lot. Hands down to grohl not using click. He had it absolutely together

    I should add that although Chad came up with that totally iconic drum lick, I completely believe that the way that Dave plays it completely transformed the song. That was def one of Dave's strengths. His power and emotion that he injects into songs with his playing. Sorry Chad. I will always love you for your awesome creativity in composing that lick, but I feel that Dave played it in a way that was tastier, in my humble opinion.

    Sounds to me that he held the cymbals at the end of the take. I'm a drummer and a recording engineer, I could be wrong but that's what I heard.

    I disagree. The drums didn't sound dead in the 1980's. They sounded like friggin' cannons, lol! Kiss' 'I Love It Loud' comes to mind. Now don't get me wrong. I'm a huge Nirvana fan, and I absolutely love the way Butch Vig and Steve Albini captured Dave's drums on record, but I don't think the drums sounded dead in the 1980's. Thunderous to the point of being too loud, sure, but dead I would beg to differ.

    I think it was actually Kurt Cobain who wrote the drums on this song. I don't have the sources on hand but I remember hearing Dave Grohl (and maybe even Chad) say that Kurt Cobain already had most of the songs on Nevermind written out and dictated how he wanted the drums to sound. Kurt Cobain was a drummer before he learned any other instrument so it makes sense

    The drummer for Modern Baseball is really cool. Tre Cool from Green Day made me want to play drums. I hope you react to both of them.

      Charlie O'Steen I second the Tré Cool suggestion. He’s a very tight, powerful, and skilled drummer - definitely worthy of a reaction, especially to one of his isolated drum tracks!

    And about the 80's drum sounds being over produced, listen to the full version of this song....there's a good amount of production on the final drum sounds here as well.

      @Sensible Talk I found the process for some of those sounds really interesting too. Like the drums on the first Skid Row album were recorded in a huge warehouse and the room sound was used as the reverb for the drums. Similar process for Motley Crue's Dr. Feelgood album if I remember correctly.....they mic'd the loading dock and left the loading doors open. As processed as the sounds were at the time, they were some of my favorite snare sounds....big and fat!

    As a bassist I never make jokes about drummers. I mean, let's face it, bass players get joked on just as much as drummers. Rhythm deserves respect.
