We have one of these in the studio . . . it's such a great effect. I'm actually watching this demo again just to make sure I comprehend all the things that it does. I've wanted a pedal that does EXACTLY what the Sonar does for quite some time and until I heard this one, I hadn't found one yet . . . THIS guy is the real deal and I'm really impressed with it. Thank you Zvex people.
Pretty amazing the depth of thought you put into such a simple effect. Youve thoroughly succeeded in taking it to an entirely new level of usability and function. Impressive to say the least.
I own a Fuzz Probe and this other ZVEX pedal is a must for me, I find their products help me push myself harder because of the awesome sounds I get, thanks guys and keep up the great work, greetings from Chicago.
ZVEX is freakin awesome. Quality products
They are the best. Worth the extr cost
youre doing some great new things with very 'conventional' effects. keep it up! bought a fuzz factory years ago and its still hours of fun!
the design and set of features in this are amazing
Wow, this pedal is so well thought through. "Boutique" effects are ten a penny, but pedals like this and makers like Zvex are not. That Z have been going so long only makes this commitment to innovation more impressive.
It's like I'm watching this video at 1.5x speed
John Doge and if you play it half speed he sounds drunk!
+h2ophilter and at 1.25 there is no difference XD
John Doge I think it is fast
Love the crazy sounds!
no discussions needed, best trem in the business!
Genius. I love this company.
Mr. Vex, you have a very soothing voice
So many functions it makes my head hurt, but my ear tingle.
not sure how i never came across this pedal but it was love at first sight and i just ordered one
Love it! Another winner!
Beautiful!
I'd never noticed before now how much Vex sounds like Robert Downey Jr.
+Charles Carr Exactly my thought through out this entire video..
Incredible tremolo pedal, thinking of getting it now, great tutorial thanks :)
I know what you mean however once you set it up for your use is just a matter of turning it on or off, no? All these features remind me of Electo Harmonix stuff, I love their pedals because there is so much control over many parameters in some of their pedals and they make some crazy stuff that's fun as he'll to play around with. For playing live I just go with real simple pedals so I don't have to mess around to get the sound I want, so I'm with you there.
By light years the best tremolo pedal in history!
Hell, I'd get this just for how it would work with my Fuzz Factory. DEAR LORD!
this man is a genius
Excellent!
Am I the only one that thinks the fuzz factory and the sonar sound terrifying together?
Thank you so much!
great grea great piece of gear
A really cool take on a traditional effect. I'd love to see ZVEX make an analog delay!
At around 4:00 into the video, we showcase the “hidden features” of the pedal, which unleash it’s wave shaping abilities. By holding down the TAP TEMPO foot switch, you change the function of each of these two knobs: SPEED=ATTACK, DUTY=RELEASE. You can effectively change the wave shape with those two controls.
If an expression pedal in was added to adjust/bypass the delta, this thing would be perfect
This is sick! I must have it
this is so cool
Do love ZVex
epic effect
I'd love to see a larger version of this pedal with the hidden features on the surface. With their own dedicated knobs. More importantly the option to use an expression pedal to control the speed. Maybe even a foot switch to toggle between expression pedal on or off. So you can choose either in a live situation.
Musicpcb tap tempo tremolo, but you have to build it
Wish there were an LFO to bring the rate of the delta up and down hands free
omg his voice is so good
There was 999 likes. It was so satisfying to click like button 😁 Awesome pedal btw 👍
Tony Stark had a bit of downtime then.
Zachary Vex is actually Iron Man. Tony Stark is his pseudonym
I am a big fan of the Sonar, and thank you for making such an interesting and great-sounding pedal, but find it frustrating that Depth is a hidden feature, while Delta is right there on the panel. Is there a way to reverse the function of that knob, so that its primary function is Depth, while its hidden function is Delta? I like the Delta effect, but on a trem with tap tempo, I play with the Depth control more than any other, particularly if I am playing electric piano and have my effects on top of the piano.
this is like a hypercube of an effect pedal- 'control the rate of change' -that completely insane this is like a calculus course
You guys make the coolest shit. Im waiting for my sonar to come in the mail :C
so many settings within one little pedal!
Any plans to make this a stereo trem?
Bloody Sunday, you are most observant. New feature you should know about...? Yes. We will be revealing this new feature in the months to come. Promise!
Goddammit. You think your board is full. Then you watch a ZVEX video.
Zvex rules
insane.
"Plus I just like the word dooty" - I C WHAT U DID THERE
dear zvex i have a problem with my sonar been using it for several years now but just recently the tap tempo switch and the 1,2 & 7 pulsing switch doesn't work at all please help
What the heck was that toggle on the Fuzz Factory for?
I need this for my 58' CONN CLASSIC Theater Organ.
TREMULENT is a combination of TREMOLO (AM- Amplitude Modulation, and VIBRATO (FM- Frequency Modulation),
TREMULENT is achieved in theater pipe organs by pulsating an air regulator between NORMAL AIR PRESSURE and LESS AIR PRESSURE. It is basically a box with bellows in the center and heavy springs to give resistance to the oscillations, or pulsations of the air.
Essentially the oscillating DROPS IN PRESSURE DO TWO THINGS:
DROP THE VOLUME (LOUDNESS) BETWEEN OSCILLATIONS, hence AMPLITUDE MODULATION (A.M.) aka 'TREMOLO'
DROP THE PITCH (X CENTS LOWER) BETWEEN OSCILLATIONS, hence FREQUENCY MODULATION (F.M.) aka 'VIBRATO'
PUT THEM TOGETHER, ta da you get 'TREMULENT'
Don Leslie used the same logic in designing the Leslie Speaker:) . As the Lower 'drum baffle' (and Horn) rotates the A.M. is achieved because the sound travels to and fro. And F.M. is achieved due to the DOPPLER EFFECT, where a pitch lowers as a sound passes by the listener.
Don Leslie, a theater organ buff, wanted his HAMMOND TONE WHEEL ORGAN (1935-1975) to have an F.M. too. However the Hammond organs in 1940 only had the choppy tremolo effect (knob, I think just On or Off). So Don got busy and the first LESLIE MODEL 30A was born. The horns were made using corrugated paper! THEATER ORGANIST JESSE CRAWFORD (a household name in the 30's and 40's) popularized it first, lending to the Leslie's nickname- " CRAWFORD SPEAKER".
So my dilemma is actually opposite Don's*. MY ORGAN HAS VIBRATO AND I ALSO HAVE LESLIE SPEAKERS, but since these old vacuum tube Conn organs don't get very much A.M. with the Vibrato 'quivers', I'd really like to find a good TREMOLO with depth. I really like the idea of tapping the tempo, but might use a simple LM3080 IC Chip to use my organs vibrato oscillations as a Control Voltage Input to the VCA (Voltage Control Amplifier) config. on the LM3080. This will keep the oscillations of the organs vibrato circuit in exact sync to the oscillations of this ZVEX SONAR TREMOLO. Any advice on how to 'tap' into this pedal's modulation speed circuit? I guess I can figure it out.
ANYBODY HAVE A GOOD CIRCUIT FOR TREMOLO WITH SPEED AND DEPTH CONTROL?
*HE HAD TREMOLO AND NEEDED VIBRATO...in perfect sync. The Leslie did the job. Only the thing is, a Hammond organs 'clarinet'y tone' simply isn't the same as the WOODEN 'FLUTES' on a theater organ, known as TIBIA CLAUSA PIPES [Square box like wooden pipes with 'stoppers' in the top for tuning as well]. The bright side is that the Hammond/Leslie organ combo became the greatest sound in the world. Well at last to us organ players. I picked up Hammond playing in 96', after 20yrs of serious guitar playing. A 'tone head' gets hungry! And what a meal the Hammond/Leslie is! Same exact principle as strings over a pickup, only it's individual spinning metal discs (tone wheels) in close proximity to the individual wire wound pickups for each X 91, on a Hammond organ.
My 1958' CONN CLASSIC 810 (which contains 90 tubes...80 of which are 12AU7, and used for the low demand Individual Oscillators, where each note on the keyboard has it's own sound source. At any rate, most of those 12AU7's are original! As I said, oscillators put very little strain on the tubes, unlike amplifier circuits.
PLEASE, NEVER TRASH AN OLD ORGAN FOR PARTS OR AN 'AMP PROJECT'! IF AN ORGAN HAS ANY TUBES AT ALL IT MEANS IT'S A GREAT MUSICAL INSTRUMENT BUILT WHEN THEY BUILT EXCELLENT ORGANS. ONCE THEY ARE GONE THEY WILL NEVER MAKE MORE! Guitar amps don't sound that good using full freq. Output Transformer used on organ amps anyway. Guitar OT's are more centered on Midrange frequencies. So don't kill an organ for a mediocre guitar amp! Audiophiles...put the rescued organ in your den or something...aren't all you guys rich anyway? Then play the organ or find it a GOOD home...be patient.
ANALOG RULES! PERIOD.
Reminds me of the very insane and (unfortunately) long gone Goatkeeper by Lightfoot Labs. That was one of the wildest tremolo/vibrato pedals to ever land on the face of the earth.....
Took me 5 years to realize the company is just a play on your name....
I'm fcukn getting one !
By the way, what's that mini toggle switch in the Fuzz Factory? Is it a brand new feature that we should know about? and when is it coming out?
I must have this
can it do a vox repeat percussion effect?
I just got this pedal.. that 124 toggle has my mind in a boggle. Seems to only work with a n certain settings. I’m sure I’ll figure it out... maybe it’s the wave my ear isn’t picking up when set very subtle or something. Amazing tremolo tho!! Hand painted sounds better btw
The 124 toggle is a multiplier for "tapped" tempos only. As soon as you turn the speed knob, you over write the tapped tempo with tempo information from the speed knob. The 124 switch won't appear to do anything while tempo is being controlled by the speed knob. Tap in a new tempo, and the 124 switch will work, until you adjust the speed knob again.
its hard to appreciate the bit about blinking yellow leds if you dont use pedals with hidden features. I got two meris pedals, which are amazing and rich with features but every knob has two uses and its really hard to remember where the second function was at last time you played. you got to manually calibrate your ears to see where it is by turning it all the way up or all the way down to reorient yourself. its not deal breaking, but its an extra step and its annoying, especially when youre playing live. Also, im going to buy a trem soon zvex. i havent decided between the sonar and eqds nightwire and the JHS kodiak. i however, would totally pick the sonar outright if it was vertical. I got a few zvex pedals but they do hell on my board arrangement. it sounds like something that should not matter so much but it does to me. You should make all vexters vertical. its kinda crappy that people won't see them and know it kicks ass cause its zvex at a glance and being vertical does make them seem kinda more plain than it should but it makes mixing and matching and changing order so much easier. That being said, zvex pedals are still awesome and theyre distinctive by how awesome they are. you dont need a funny shape to stand out. just make them vertical and let the people realize its something special with the sounds instead of the shape.
Robert evans does a pedal demo
He is a robot sent from the future
is the FF before or after the Sonar?
awesome features for a tremolo; most are so boring. i wish all the features had a dedicated knob though rather than having to hold down the button
You sir a mad fuckin genius. Brafuckingvo! Love it.
Is stereo coming?
pretty sure in the video you said it was Sonar -> FF, not the other way around. isn't the variance from the Sonar affecting the FF instead of vice versa?
8:35 lol fail, i love this pedal! i'll probably get one
I have to say- if there is a second version of this pedal, I would like to politely request a few changes:
1) I understand why there is no s̶p̶e̶e̶d̶ depth control, since there is a tap, but it would be swell if the center position on the delta switch, rather than giving you a dead knob, let you set the trem s̶p̶e̶e̶d̶ depth manually.
2) I would have loved a 3x setting more than a 4x setting.
3) When you set the attack times, it would be nice if when you held the "tap" button down to edit the slopes, you could let go of it, without edit mode ending- switching back into play mode would just mean you'd have to hold the tap down again.
I am, as always, available to help you beta test this :)

"I don't get (1)... isn't there a speed control on this? I guess the speed control is more of a fine tuning control, but it's still a control."
Not sure what I was smoking that day, but I meant "depth" not speed.
"Also, (3) sounds like a good idea, but I'm not sure I'd want that kind of mode switching… pressing and holding is pretty intuitive."
Holding the tap button down means you can't play guitar while adjusting depth and envelope, which makes getting the settings just right kind of hard. Especially when "duty" and "delta" are kind of esoteric functions... I'd prefer to have the meat and potatoes easily accessed.

I know there is a depth control; you can tell because in my previous post I refer to it directly.
Glad the pedal works for you. I got the EHX Super Pulsar, which has more features, all of which are easily adjusted, storable presets, and an oscillator that goes fast enough to get into the audio range.
It's nice, very well thought of and so tiny for a tap tempo tremolo with so many features. I would buy it to get rid of my Shape Shifter tremolo which is very versatile and sounds fantastic, but is quite big. However, after a while I was completely lost while watching the demo, and on top of that there are two features that do not interest me at all: the Delta and the Machine. So...
Very interesting pedal....But I think the slowing down or speeding up toggle switch would be more playable if it was connected to a foot switch.
Any news on the new FF feature?? :D
His voice sounds like synthetic
Before!
would be great if you update your pedals to midi controlling...
When is info about the switch on the Fuzz Factory coming?? Come on!!!
His voice sounds like Fitter Happier from Radiohead !
It makes his employees more productive.
I gotta have it
Zachary, you said "duty." Heh. Heh heh.
My duty cycle sounds like.....like SWOOOOOOOSHHHHHHHHHCLUGCLUGCLUGSHHHHHH
I dont know how to use this pedal. . .
What do you mean? I'm pretty sure you can do that.
How about a stereo sonar?
damm
I wish the hidden controls were labeled tbh 😂memorizing will be good for me
Y is nobody talking about his voice 🫣
kinda like asmr
I wear Depends during my dooty cycle 💩
17:40 "The output in penis of the sonar"?
impedance, but penis sounds a lot funnier :)
Whos talking?? Tony stark?
Vever at
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh FFS. My wife just got done yelling at me and im broke.
wow Brian from 'family guy' makes pedals!
I didnt know Robert Downey Jr. made demos.
i dont like trem THAT much
i prefer pedals that do one or two things really well. there's just too much stuff happening on this pedal for my taste.
i'm sure it's brilliantly designed and all that, but for most musicians it's just not practical
asparagusman it's totally unusable IMO
just set the thing into something cool and then just turn it on and off wtf
great pedal but you talk too fast man!
This sweet gay voice.. gays rule!
Another crap demo.
