  • It was difficult to finalize our itinerary for Spain. So much to see. We went with: Madrid, Toledo, Seville, and Barcelona.
Highlights in Madrid: Parque de Retiro (350 acres) and the outstanding museums. Madrid is also a great hub from which to explore the smaller, historic towns an hour or so outside the city. We could have easily spent our entire two weeks doing that.
Toledo was a wonderful choice for feeling transported to the middle ages, and the cathedral exceeded expectations. Our guide book told us we might get lost in the winding streets. It happened; we loved it.
Seville was charming and full of history. Medieval cobblestone streets, lined with shops and restaurants. Every ancient church became a mosque, and then a church again. You see the cultural exchange in the architecture and hear it in the music. The performance at the Museo Baile Flamenco was magical. And the Royal Palace was unlike anything we'd ever seen.
Bullet trains are a wonderful thing. Our trip from Seville in the south to Barcelona in the northeast was quick and easy. The Gaudi masterpieces were fascinating, especially Sagrada Familia (still under construction 100+ years in). And exploring the various places of interest on Montjuic was a day we'll never forget. We had our best meal just around the corner from our Airbnb at Grill Room Bar Thonet where the owner worked the room and made us feel welcome.
We've had such luck with our shoulder season trips. We joke that our superpower is controlling the weather. You can see in the video that our day at Sagrada Familia and Parc Guell was overcast; but that was it (one day with some clouds). Every other day was sunny with temps in the 70s (a tad warmer in Seville). It may not be the sexiest superpower, but we never take the gorgeous weather for granted.
