I love the way sea voyages always show perfect straight lines on the map.
You should check out GeoWizard's str8 line missions. On land!
I can't imagine sharing that cabin with three people.
I lived in Valencia from 2004 to 2009 and used this service a few times. I always found the customer service a bit unpredictable and lacking - although the staff themselves were always as friendly as they could be. Valencians are very warm people. You couldn't always predict which berth the ship would leave from, on one occasion we had to drive behind a pilot vehicle which took us on a big tour of the docks until we arrived at the ship. Whenever I told my local friends I was going on the ferry to Palma, they always said "why don't you fly?". The main advantage to me of taking the ferry was being able to take my bike and all my camping gear with me.
Such impressive architecture in Valencia. Thanks for showing during the opening.
It's such a beautiful city, the City of Arts and Sciences is just the cherry on the cake. The market and the area around it are stunning!
Thanks for the video.. looking into from Barcelona for a 2 or 3 day visit to Palma.. will probably do ferry over and look at flights back.. going over saves cost of a hotel room, and don't want to waste a full day on ferry back. Cabin is a good deal for 2-3 people, more cost effective, will eat dinner b4, go right to sleep, and bring some fruit or other for quick breakfast upon arrival..
I too was quite surprised that the food was so bad! I've taken the overnight ferries many times in the past and been very impressed with the selection.
The ship itself was outstanding. As for the food-it seems like ever since Covid hit, it has become nearly impossible to find good food on planes, boats and trains, almost like those businesses were looking for an excuse to drop the level of service. Considering the crazy wake up time on this ferry, there’s no point in paying for the cabin or taking the overnight voyage. Better to save money, sail during daylight hours if possible and enjoy the Mediterranean views. 🛳 🌞. Thanks for another great video! 👍🏻
All ferries charge over the top on food and mostly it's pretty disgusting what they serve. That chair looked the best option compared to the cabin. My suggestion fly between Valencia and Palma
Thank you so much for making this video documentation! You saved me money and a bothersome wakeup call at 4:30 in the morning. Indeed no bueno and no dia! I will be taking the daytime trip on the ferry instead, so I don´t have to sleep for such a short time.
I’ve used ferry travel most of my adult life and still do, one of the first things I learnt was that ferry food is crap but it’s getting slightly better now, the problem is that the ro ro ferries are on a tight schedule and I’ve found that it’s the passenger who suffers, to be honest the daylight sailings are no different to the night sailings you travel at night to avail of arriving early and having a full day to explore with the daylight sailings you arrive at night and then your time is limited as to what you can do before bedtime, good informative post Dylan
I must say I enjoy your train trips so much more. This one was quite boring. The ship seemed nice and clean, but why bother with a cabin if you only 5 hours of use. Find a lounge, finger food, a few 🍺's and watch some travel movies on the IPhone.
Shame the food wasn't better. The ship looked pretty nice. I enjoyed the video. I've taken several ferries as well as several transatlantic and transpacific voyages but not this one. Maybe some day.
I agree! The ferry itself was pretty nice! I hope to do a transatlantic voyage some day 😁
@@DylansTravelReports that ship made BC Ferries here on the west coast of Canada look terrible.
@@DylansTravelReports I want that as a 50th birthday present, although given covid not sure if that will happen
Wow. What amazing buildings and gardens!
Cool fact: In 2018 i got drunk at a foam party in Magaluf, Majorca.
Woke up on the ferry to Barcelona 👍
Hahahaha
They do the minibus thing for a lot of the Irish Sea ferries too, especially Holyhead-Dublin. Though that might be because there are only about a minibus worth of foot passengers.
At least the bloke at Mallorca got his massive carrier bag of oranges across in one piece. Nice vid as ever. 👍
Thanks for the video, as I want to cross from Valencia to Mallorca with my dog. Brittany Ferries, the food was very poor and expensive that was on the Portsmouth to Santander route. You could perhaps do a series on ferry trips to see the different standards of comfort provided.
I think your comments about your experience were spot on. They seem to put operational considerations over passenger comfort. Still, the ferry looked spotless and seemed to run to schedule. I think you would have had a better experience in the open seated area than you did in the cabin where you were rudely disturbed from your slumbers - unnecessarily & stupidly early.
big beautiful ferry boat with all the amenities, nice private rooms and nice seats for budget travellors. the art and sciences buildings looked very modern. the ferry boat was big like cruise ship. ferry boat terminal looked nice and clean.
Valencia is such a wonderful city. And the ferry passes north of Ibiza. Where Ibiza is the place to chill and rave.
For this short a trip, unless I needed to be someplace early in the day, I would take the day time ferry and enjoy the views. Make it part of the adventure.
Me too .. enjoy the blue sea,!
Glad you liked my home city of Valencia, shame about the ferry food. I just returned from holiday in Menorca and for next year am considering doing a Valencia-Mallorca flight, couple of days in Palma then ferry from Alculdía (Mallorca) to Ciutadella (Menorca). The hotel where I stay is a 10 minute walk from the commercial port. The ferry companies that link Mallorca to Menorca are Baleària or FRS rather than Transmediterránea so maybe the food will be better, though I doubt any cheaper! Thanks for the review!
Congratulations Dylan! You summarized extremely well , what the overnight ferry to balearics is light. Crap ood that cost less than 1 euro, sold for gold and expensive price for just 4h of sleep. Before the arrival of the fast ferry (3-4h daytime), the overnight ferries were the way to go. At this stage the only benefit of using the ferry is hat you can take your own car, and save on the rental that's all. Taking vueling , air europa or Ryanair from Valencia and sleeping in Mallorca, would have been a much better experience.
NOT Ryanair ( or only with hand luggage....)
Looks like a nice ferry very comfortable not keen on that hot hour long walk that would kill me hope you enjoyed your trip cheers mate stay well and safe
We need a nice long train trip from Berlin to Portugal.
It would be a nightmare!
We'll be traveling on the same boat in a week from Palma to Valencia.. with my family and cats. We'll take the seats. Cheaper and easier. We'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the detailed Video.
Cheers,
I would love to see you do a review on the Aberdeen to Shetland overnight ferry service. I've seen some great reviews but also some bad ones when the weather has been bad. Its a route on my to do list!
I'm hoping to cover that one at some point!
I ferried overnight from Naples Italy to Palermo Sicily in Mar 2011, and it was remarkably similar in the quality of accommodations and the quality of the food. Our poolside area was not nearly as nice as yours looked though. Our inside cabin was nice but near the engines or something. A 'not so quiet rumble' was non-stop all night long, I wore earplugs but was still bothered by it. Getting aboard initially was not nearly as smooth for us, we drove our rental car directly onto the ship, after a treacherous wild time driving through the city of Naples after dark. Of course we were lost, and we could see the ship but could not navigate towards it until finally we were on track. We were the last car to board and they closed up immediately after we pulled through. We had barely made it! Looking back, it was a great time!
Trasmediterranea ferry ⛴️ is good perfect video
👍
Minibus seats laid out in 2 + 1 configuration now time for a seat tour. I think you missed an opportunity there.
Hi Dylan, it is with great pleasure that I can finally access the Internet again and see your videos. I just saw the last one, the one from the boat. As always, you filmed extremely well, showed the climate of travel very well at the moment, a climate that we ourselves have felt. I enjoyed reading your comments and following you on your pilgrimages. I agree with you. Thanks a lot, Dylan!
Yay, welcome back Louis!
I haven't taken this crossing but was considering it. You saved me, thanks.
In the meantime my opinion of your excursion is its basically the Caledonian Sleeper in a floating mode. A hot mess beginning to end.
Cheers !
It's a long time since I went on the Hull to Rotterdam ferry, but it definitely used to be an example of how to do food on a ferry. Buffet dinner and breakfast, plenty of good options to choose from. Although I regretted it when we hit the force 9 gale. I would suggest putting it on your to do list.
Hull - rotterdam/Amsterdam is very good - prior to covid was a regular on the run - would make a good video.
Is that ferry still running?
@@s125ish according to the P&O website, yes. The Hull to Zeebrugge route seems to be no more though.
@@s125ish The Hull - Zeebrugge service has ended. However, if you had checked the P&O website you will see the timetable for Hull - Rotterdam. You don't need to ask questions like this on TH-cam when you can easily check the ferry company website.
Strange arrival time. On the overnight Plymouth-Roscoff if it's going to be a calm crossing the boat shuts down for an hour a few miles out from Plymouth. But if its a westerly or north-westerly wind and going to be rough it uses that hour to head towards Falmouth, then a sharp left turn towards Roscoff so the wind is astern. Gets in about 0830 (French time) if I recall.
We took the Balnearia ferry last year with friends and their car. The ship was spotless, and they followed all the health rules. That one stops also in Ibiza, so you get an extra hour or more of sleep before you dock in Palma. Besides being able to take your car, the ferry allows you to bring your pets, which is a big plus for some people.
I guess that the day service is much more conveniant, because you can enjoy the trip and the views on the deck. So if I am not in a hurry and I want to enjoy a cruise this ferry can be an option, but the day service, not the night.
Otherwise, the plane is 8 euro(basic) with ryanair and vueling. Maybe a comparing video like a ferry vs low cost plane from Palma to Valencia could be nice to see the exact cost. Because to go to/from airport it can be time and money consuming as well.
Good video, thanks for it.
Hi Dylan I just thought I'd say that the Inverness to wick by train is a very nice line to go on I think you would enjoy I go on the line alot it's a bit of a long journey but very enjoyable. Keep up the good work
That was interesting. Never been on a ship like this before, only a way smaller boats.
4.30am is not too early for a seasoned traveller and you cannot beat a ferry journey. Tough luck with the food and pricey overall. Good advice on the daytime route.
I have been on this boat, food is confirmed bad. And boat needs a few updates, buy some Bose QC and bugger them giving you a wake up call!
I have never taken this ferry, but I have taken the overnight ferries between Piraeus and Crete. The also arrive early in the morning, but if you have booked a cabin you are allowed to carry on sleeping until 8am, which is the civilised way to do it. However, your ferry may have been doing a day trip back to Valencia, in which case they needed to turn around the cabins fast to have them ready for the next load.
Some years back, I had some very nice experiences on ferries. The first from a day trip from Normandy France to Southampton in England. A week later from another day round trip from Wales to Dublin Ireland. The third another few weeks later and overnight trip in cabin with family from Plymouth England to Santander Spain. All very positive experiences and recommended.
Addendum .... I also took the overnight ferry from Bari Italy to Dubrovnik Croatia, with my car. That was also a great trip. It was back just before the pandemic, so it was uneventful, even with the car
I really liked this, it was something a boit different, cheap flight out to valencia, then i would take the day crossing to see some of the journey, a day or 2 in Majorca, thn fly back to the uk again as a alternative short break away, but have to agree the sailing with the cabin seemed a bit expensive, , You should do more of these types of trips . Catamaran from poole to Gurnsey, Portsmouth to france etc Thanks
Great shot of the ship, Thanks. BTW, I really like the looks of this place, on my bucket list this goes.
For your next trip do Portugal's Douro Line!
I have a review of that coming up in the future!
An interesting video as usual. I’ve noticed in many of your videos when you comment about food or refreshments you don’t seem especially fussy although you sometimes mention things being pricey, so for you to observe that a meal was revolting 🤮 is notable 😉😳. I haven’t taken internal ferries in Spain, apart from a few brief costal trips in Valencia and Málaga (quite enjoyable), but I have taken several Inter-island ferries & ferries from/to Piraeus in Greece and they weren’t as nice as this vessel, although the food was just as mediocre/awful. I suspect your remarks about a captive market are pretty accurate.
Yeah - limited selection of food and at a horrific price point - you're right about being a captive market. Probably costs them hardly anything to make.
Best off just getting food when you're on dry land!
This was very informative and useful. Your recommendation to take the day ferry is definitely the way to go. Sorry the food was so bad, a major minus. As for getting up at 4:30 A.M. - horrible. The ship was sizeable and looked nice. It might be interesting some day for you to cover some Scandinavian ferries like the ones between Copenhagen & Oslo or Stockholm & Helsinki.
We have the best beautiful ferries hre in norway møre and romsdal, fjord1 completely best, svele, coffee, many optipns!
That's a good idea, years ago (1981) I took the overnight ferry from Helsinki to Stockhlm, I recall it is like a cruise ship and car ferry in one, all the Scandinavian services seem to be good.
The ship looked very nice and the amenities also. The pool area was a nice touch. Maybe the food is sort of hit and miss and another time it would be different. Caribbean cruise ships sometimes vary from restaurant to restaurant on the same ship !! As for the short sleep period, I guess they figure that once in Mallorca you will get plenty of "R & R". Very good review, Dylan, I would definitely try it.
Great trip, something surprise me is when the foot passengers taking the minibus from ferry terminal into the ship. The cabin looks expensive because it has toilet and shower room plus have a window view. I think the passenger who booked the cabin should get free dinner or meal.
I´m impressed, I had never seen one of these ferries to Baleares. I thought there were only daytime services.
It's difficult to judge from a short video but as someone who used the Stena Harwich /Hook Ferry, I think they have the edge on boarding procedure , cabin comfort...... and food!
Yes, that service is better by a country mile!
Just a small cafe and some seating. This is why I love ferry terminals - no pushing overpriced tat onto you like at airports. They know you're there for one thing and one thing only...to board a ferry!
Always good to hear a bit of Rick Astley belting out on the radio
Having travelled quite a bit on ferries I know only too well how dire the food can be.Apart from that the Ferry was rather nice and huge!!
I took the Transmed overnight to Palma from Barcelona in a cabin with my wife and daughter and it was just fine. Didn’t eat supper on the boat because, you know, Barcelona. Got a breakfast snack that wasn’t too bad. I don’t remember exactly what time they came pounding on the door but it didn’t seem excessively early for arrival around 6. Overall I think it was a good experience, and for the three of us not a bad value.
Yeah, the ferry from Barca arrives a couple of hours after this one did.
For the ferry from Holyhead, Wales to Dublin they only called us to get on the bus about 20 minutes before leaving, and the bus stayed on the ferry for the entire journey, though it was a much shorter crossing than this. We had to go down with everyone that had a car as otherwise the bus would be blocking the lane on the car deck.
The best thing about that trip was landing in Palma, beautiful city , and yeah, the food on the ferry looked awful, safe travels 👍
Found the handheld camera motion a bit nauseous this video. Just as well it wasn't a choppy crossing!
Great report. Your rituals like waving to the bathroom mirror add character. Regarding your fish and chips, that is the weirdest fish I've ever seen - perfectly cylindrical battered tubes! What was it?
Eel? Or perhaps 3D printed soja with fish aroma??
Hey Dylan, great video! Really enjoyed it 👍
Pleased to hear 😁
You know being British my first thought when I started to watch the video is why would you travel at night unless you had to. Given the choice I would have done the day crossing (why miss out on all that glorious med sun?).If you ever get the chance I really would like to see the same trip but during the day I mean people pay a lot of money to cruise the med and this could be just as good just shorter.
Thank you for a most interesting review. Nice looking ship, but what a shame the food was so dreadful. Its not a route I plan to take, but there must surely be a flight available from Valencia to Palma ? Spain has exceptionally good interior flights, and to the Balearics. Well done for perserverance !
You should do Coach and maybe bus reports too. The Flixbus Glasgow to London Coach is supposed to be a big hit!
I’ve done long distance bus travel. It’s no fun if you have leg problems or mobility issues. Especially using the toilets.
@@sodorflubbs5000 so have I, yeah that can be bad.
It amazes me that transport operators - rail, sea or air fail to appreciate the importance of good, value for money food and beverages. It can make the difference between a journey remembered for the wrong reasons, or one of the highlights of any trip. Or am I being too simplistic?
I guess in this case they figure the passengers are a captive market. And if you wanted to go to Mallorca you wouldn't *not* go because of the on-board food (although it would certainly be an incentive for me to take my own food on board)
So many companies are using Covid as an excuse for all kinds of poor service
This is where the Hull - Rotterdam service is good. you board early then can have a relaxing meal at a reasonable time and retire when you want. After a hard day at work, I normally have an excellent meal in the A la Carte ( never had a bad meal) refreshed break fast and after a day working in amsterdam the same in reverse. Food may not be cheap - but its worth the price due to the Quality of the product.
This is on my to do list Dylan but in the other direction and I'd definitely do a day crossing on such a short trip I think as on either side of a night sailing you will have long waits from checking out of a hotel to checking in again assuming you're staying in hotels of course on either side. Great trip report though 😀
Agree with you Dylan on all points. Overall mediocre. Waking you up at ungodly 4:30 A.M. should be a crime. 😂. Probably the day ferry is the way to go and just use the recliner seat. Thanks for taking us along 👍🏻
Wow. Just imagine having four people in that cabin. It would be cramped enough with 2 adults in there, adding 2 kids would be chaos. And if you've got 4 adults in there on a stag do... I dread to think!
I've done 5 in a cabin of that size before 😅
@@DylansTravelReports Oh god you would hope none of them snored lol
Wonder how many sci-fi films have used the futuristic buildings in the beginning as a filming location.
I think nicest ferry you took was the Hook of Holland route
Used to go every year on the, Hull to Zeebrugge ferry, absolutely excellent sadly it’s now closed down. Need to find another way to Belgium 🇧🇪 , in the none too distant future.
Yes, could have done with it last month when France got put into amber plus zone, a direct ferry to Belgium (from Dover) would have been very handy indeed!
Could you make a video about the ferry from Aberdeen to Shetland island?.
I'm hoping to at some point.
Thank you for your review :) although I live in Spain, I've never been on a ferry here so I can't tell how they are. I love the Baltic ferries though, strongly recommend Silja Line/Tallink from Helsinki/Tallinn to Stockholm, the food is considerably better (granted, this was before the pandemic) and the views are amazing!
I love Palma but getting there before daylight I’m not too sure about. Due to the late departure and early arrival I think I would take the day crossing or use one of the seats as a cabin doesn’t seem worth it to me .
Enjoyed the video, although like it best when you narrate orally. Looking forward to next Friday.
More narrated videos coming in a couple of weeks 😁
Another great and informative video!
Thanks!
Honestly I liked the narration. Is there going to be more of that?
Yes, in a couple of weeks.
The ship looks amazing. But 2 lagers before sailing? You'll be floating either way.
Only on 2? I don't think so 😅
Nice ship and sleeping accommodations, but I think I would enjoy it more on the Day Trip! What other choice of food was there? Personally, I would never go for Fish and chips on that type of voyage, stick with a stationary restaurant for that! I'm surprised that a Ferry has a pool, very interesting, any changing rooms? Does that ship have longer trips that would make better use of a pool?
I think it sometimes goes to the Canary Islands which is much longer.
Another cruise video about the do’s and don’t’s. I love going on a cruise but almost every video related to cruising portrays the style of travel in a negative light each and every time.
Amazing video I loved everything Dylan mate
Thanks!
Not sure you can comment on the whole food menu, dinner AND breakfast when only having fish and chips (why has fish and chips in Spain anyway?) otherwise, great review!
Daniel Handforth: Exactly my sentiment! My experience of Ferries has been those between Portsmouth/Plymouth and Bilbao/Santander and yes, the selfservice food is not the best but the restuarant sevice is excellent. After all proper dining on board is all part of the experience.
That's what I would have opted for if this was offered. Sadly, it wasn't.
Si son 7 horas de viaje , debiera partir a la 1.00 y llegar a las 8.00. No pueden despertarte a las 4.30 de la mañana.!! Tampoco vi ninguna entretencion a bordo. Al menos podria haber un casino o discoteque o bar ..algo para pasar la noche.
I've done this trip a few times Dylan including Palma-Ibiza but these were on the Baleària line. I find the day crossings are the best because you can sit outside on the decks and more facilities are open during the day. I don't know how these ferries make any money because they always seem to very quiet and local citizens are entitled to ridiculously low subsidised fares so not much revenue from them.
Dylan, you have awoken something I`d nearly forgotten .....cruising, and usually from Palma. There is no better holiday than a cruise and the Island of Mallorca is so beautiful. I can`t wait
to return to such a fantastic Island. Pity about the food the Spanish are better than that. Is it Covid OR is it a chance to cost cut ?
Another great video Dylan. I mean I wake up early (6.45 - 7) but 4.30 that's a tad too early. That food didn't look nice at all!
The crossing is too short-u shld review the overnight ferry to the Canary Islands
I thought you were going to end up seasick or something . Was that Rick Astley playing on the bus?? 😂😂
I think it was 😂
Signature Calatrava structures in the beginning.
Great looking facilities on board this ferry (puts the Spirit of Tasmania ferries to shame) but, ohhh, the experience you had puts this one at the bottom of my travel bucket list. You obviously needed the Heinekens after your hot walk at the start, but what the hell did you do wrong to cop crap food, inadequate sleep time (I'm sure even at deck seven you must have copped screw rumble and vibration) and the rude 04 45 awakening? Great sunrise view across the harbour of the ship but I'm sure you were not in harmony with the scene. I had to chuckle when you showed the church at the end. Did you visit to atone for your sins and pray for a better day?
No, I went and got on a train after 😅
The one thing would add is that I’ve used these services with a pedal bike. My Spanish is reasonable but I found it nearly impossible to find out the procedure for loading the bike. None of the employees would give me a straight answer. Without any Spanish I would imagine it would have been even more stressful
awesome!
New Video Coming Soon: Rouge the Bat Telling about Trasmediterránea.
Pity the food wasn’t better, sadly though other countries idea of fish and chips differ. Here where I am you’d get a couple large pieces of perch and a bag of potato chips if you order “fish and chips” not the same as the UK
So....what exactly are you supposed to do at 6AM at a ferry terminal a long way away from the city centre?? Can't imagine much is open at that time.
No, there's not. I just slowly walked into Palma.
Nice vedio . Thanks
If only the ship had carpet in the cabins and corridors it would be quite luxurious. The hard floors give it a cheap feel.
Your crossing from Hook of Holland to Harwich was a much better experience.
I took that ride back in 1988, nostalgia!
Edit: nah, me I went from Barcelona to Ibiza 🤔 (InterRail + 🛳️). Time flies and my recollection lags.
Never mind, since I've visited Palma as well (1991), I figure I'll put together the cruise on the one hand with the stay on the other for a combo nostalgia!
😁
Edit #2: On that InterRail I also visited Heineken Brouwerij in Amsterdam. Trio nostalgia alert! 🥰
Edit #3: On the bus I thought I heard friggen Rick Astley over the speakers! This trip is so '80s! 🤩
Edit #4: 12:43 yup that's the stern swimming pool as I recall it. Nothing has changed!
Edit #5: 13:00 Nope, sleeping was not part of my trip.
Edit #6: 13:40 ¡En las Baleares, todos los días son buenos!
Edit #7: yeah, let's take the bus...to Magaluf!
P.s. thanks for taking me for a ride down memory lane, cheers! 👍🌷
If the ferry arrives so early what do you do until the check in time at your hotel or vacation rental??
After that dinner of fish sticks and sorry looking fries then of course it's breakfast first!!
But then??
If you're young and backpacking through Europe then that's one thing but what about us old farts??
Old farts watch Dylan's Travel Reports instead.
Honestly, idk. I just sort of wandered around for a bit and tried out the rail network.
Great video as usual 👌 I enjoyed seeing a ferry crossing. Have you done Aberdeen to Shetland?
Not yet but hope to at some point.
interesting ferry ride, and the ship does look pretty nice. So, arriving at 0530 in the morning, what does one do until you can check in to your hotel unless you have booked it for the date prior to your arrival. I would much prefer the day trip, which I assume is much less since you would not need the cabin. Thanks for ride, I did enjoy it. By the way, nice to see you without a mask on.
Go look round the island I guess 🤷♂️
