Tighten is always the starting direction, or everything would fall part from vibration. Reverse threads only work on vehicles tires. As they spin going down the road that tighten themselves. Or a dodge clutch fan same thing.
I was tasked with fixing a boatload of snowblowers a couple of winters back. I got my 1/2” drill out. Enough torque to take your arm off if you weren’t careful. (Warned one guy about it, and when I got it back, he said it almost took his arm off, lol!) So, here I am, pulling off recoils to crank engines….. The other mechanic sees this and screams, “YOU CHEATER!!!”
Electric assist 😂 I’ve got a weed eater mower that the damn pull string broke on and the previous owner was gonna toss out. Could they have used bolts for the cover like everyone else? Sure. They went with rivets instead. Drilled em out and used a 15/16 socket on the drill and it came to life 😂 They didn’t even know if it would start up cause it hadn’t in years. Been using it for two years now just like that with the drill. Hot AF? Yeah, no pull starts for me thank you 🤣🤣🤣
Exactly the way I start mine. I got one off market place for $10. The pump was bad. I have replaced the carburetor too. Very simple machines. Cheeper to build one than to buy one. Parts are high on them too.
We had a riding mower when I was a kid. It didn’t have a deck so my brother and I would ride it threw the woods and mud. The starter went out and my dad said well that sucks. 30 minutes later my brother had mounted a pulley to the top of the motor and made his own pull start.
Some 70's push mowers with the Tecumki motors came from factory with a pulley on top for use with rope pull to start that came off when started . JUST WRAP & START - PUT ROP IN POCKET
I guess he got the flywheel bolt off pretty quickly and bolted a pulley to it. It still takes a lot of strength to pull start those engines, especially the flatheads
I used to do this for a pressure washer at a car detailing place I worked at, it almost always grabbed the bit and threw it. Definitely don't miss that place lmao
I had to do this a few times. Secret is to go one size up on the socket so you can withdraw quickly. I cut a socket extension off and grinded to fit the drill. Tape socket to socket extension. Last time was a month ago....☝️😁
Just take the screw out of the drill chuck so when the engine starts it try's to wind off your chuck instead of ripping your arms off, i have been doing it this way for years.
I took my drill apart and removed the pieces that prevent one way lock. No problems with back feeding the computer so far. Also runs much cooler when you're abusing it 😂
Got my atv to start like this. My friends at the trials always wonder why i have a drill with me lol. They call me lazy. I call myself "waiting for someone's starter to break". Great shit man keep it up!
and a drill bit. ive sheared one off. much safer and cheaper to just buy a recoil. that looks like a gx200 so you could buy a recoil for a predator 212 and it'll bolt right on
Some would say this is a budget option to avoid replacing the starter Others would call it "An F1 style starter" which is racing and naturally perfect engineering
The problem is... every time you start this engine, you are increasing the torque on this nut. I'm all for a bush fix. But this will be a problem "possibly " if you continue this starting technique. It will stretch the treads and compromise the crank.
The key to this is using a drill, I did this using my Milwaukee impact, it worked great the first few times, then I just broke the end of the shaft off. 😂
First 5 times I did this on my lawnmower it worked great. The sixth time it threw my drill across the yard and completely F'd my wrist. Don't try this at home kids!
I used that trick while rebuilding a generator engine a few years back. Then again while getting my roto tiller to start after many years of neglect. lol
This is how I've always used my go cart. Have the drill a spot to travel with me & a pouch full of the correct sized sockets for the body work and the engine, incase the drill is needed to fix something as well.
I’ve had the displeasure lately of having a masonry concrete/mud mixer with no pull rope. So I need to manually use a rope to start the engine which is normally not a big deal, however with this mixer when I wrap it two three times pull it the knot doesn’t want to come loose and instead tries to either rip the rope into a million mile per hour spin frenzy, or leave me trying to pull a 3000 lb mixer over because the knot caught. I’ve been in masonry for over 10 years and only now am I sketched out by a mixer and it will forever be stuck in my brain every time I start one with out a pull rope
Be careful doing that. 10 years ago i had an old nicad ridgid drill and started a lawn mower in my garage like that. The mower started sooner than expected and it spun the drill chuck backwards and unthreaded it, sending it and the big socket flying like a gyroscope shot out of a cannon, barely missing me, and taking 25% of the flywheel fins off.
I did that on my Honda mower and it stripped the thread and now the nut spins and the pull start ring just flops around and I can’t get the nut off. It may as well be a destroyed mower. I can weld the nut and that’s about it besides invasively cutting it off with a flame. However I used a rattle gun not a drill so keep that in mind when doing this. Use a *drill* with no hammer clutch.
Old news know-it-all, just turn 51, imagine how excited I get when I learn something,, learn this 25/30 years ago, didn't have electric cordless options now,, all respect
I was at my neighbors house watching him trying to start an old generator with an impact driver. It was working OK until the flywheel split in half. Never use an impact driver since they will keep tightening the nut until something breaks!
I did this to my lawnmower when the pull string broke. I made adaptor to go on a cordless drill just like that. Worked great untill then it stopped turning on alltogether. Then i bought a push button start mower 🤣🤣🤣 i just couldnt go back to pull string after this i was changed😊
You need a beefy hammer drill to do this. Even so, most riding lawn mowers and small engines do not have their bolt exposed, and to get to it, you have to take a grill off and leave it off. Not ideal. I've done it plenty and in the end, it's just better to take your carb, fuel petcock, float bowl, fuel line, etc off and physically clean it out through and through inside until they are surgically clean... esp. that idle jet. Don't ever use carb cleaner spray, the spray back will make you go blind...instead use qtips, paper towers, and Berryman B12 solvent to soak the metal parts in after you remove all rubber parts that will swell up or dissolve from it.
I usually do this to any lawnmower that the string or winding mechanism has broken. I wouldn't really attempt this on a motor of that size. This is a quick way to break a wrist.
That starter socket will have been cut to slip in the back direction just as the old hand crank starting handles. But it won’t help when it back-fires.
I did the exact same thing with my gas pressure washer because it was such a mf to start. The only difference is I bought a cheap plug in ryobi drill from a pawn shop just to use as a starter instead of my Milwaukee drill
Fun fact: this is pretty much how Formula One cars are started, starter motors are heavy and not strictly necessary.
That damn starter tool looks like a MF jack hammer😂
I have a friend that works the push truck at the local track when the midget series is in town.
@@stevehensley5096 how did he get into that?
Same with top fuel! I've heard their handheld starters, that take two people to operate, are around 300 horsepower!
same with moto gp
Troy built drill starters have a one-way mechanism for this reason.
Have a craftsman one that I've used for everything but the edger it came with. Lol

You would need to be loosing it
