"A couple of days before I wrote 'This Charming Man' I'd heard 'Walk Out To Winter' (by Aztec Camera) on Radio 1, and I felt a little jealous. My competitive urges kicked in. I felt that we needed something up-beat and in a major key for Rough Trade to get behind." quote from johnny
@@Marcel_Audubon cool your tatz mang, both writers are cool in their own way. (even tho frame is a master on the guitar) the only thing music snobbery we need is that the 80s was the best
Johnny Marr of the Smiths said that the early Aztec Camera songs were a major influence on his songwriting. In fact Walk Out to Winter inspired This Charming Man. Love you Roddy!
a fabulously simple tune but so affecting in the minor key, feels like it should be a sad song but i'm always uplifted when i hear it. It was one Terry Wogan who got me hooked on this about 3 years back. Thanks Terry ...and Roddy of course
High Land, Hard Rain remains on my list of all time favorite albums. When you can remember every track lyric for lyric - you know it's the truth. Aztec Camera is the truth!
one of THE BEST EIGHTY songs.... this band was so jazz/pop/new wave they were cool....listened to this all through high school too bad my school was full of rockers...lol thanks whoever posted this... if only we had u tube when we were in high school....
Johnny Marr has been quoted as saying this song inspired the guitar part he wrote for this charming man. However the guitar progression I’m hearing in walk out to winter sounds like it has much more in common with Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now to my ears. Anyone else feel this way?
Whoah...my mind is blown! have loved this song for a couple decades now running but never seen this video. Talk about longing for nostalgia without a proper reference point. Man, this is sparking all kinds of crazy surreals.
I heard this on "Old Grey Whistle Test" back in 1983; I was captivated by it, and couldn't believe when I found out that this amazingly talented guy was just a teenager like me! Wonderful lyrics and guitar work - still sounds just as great :)
Esta con Shout To The Top (Style Council), Whole Of The Moon (Waterboys) y Killing Moon (Echo & The Bunnymen) son las mejores piezas musicales del siglo XX. miguelpopmusic.blogspot.com/2012/12/aztec-camera-high-land-hard-rain-1983.html

I am happy that a quirky and cool musician named Roddy Frame exists in this world. I am just saddened by the fact he did not get the recognition he deserved..My favorite song from the 80s !!
This song brings back so many memories. Going out on a Friday night after "The Tube" with Jools Holland and the late great Paula Yates. Blimey, where has the time gone............
That is so scary as I type this I'm sitting in Dymchurch (Spitting distance to Hythe) I've been up the lighthouse @ 3:05 & tonight I've sat within 200 yards of where that phone box was. It's a very small world.

Aztec Camera to me are like a glass half-full type of person's Smiths! (though I love both bands myself). Interesting how Johnny Marr was in some way influenced by this song.
I saw them open for someone back in 83 or 84. Liked them so much I bought their album (vinyl, still have it). What ever happened to them? This was a great band.
Met in the summer and walked 'til the fall And breathless we talked, it was tongues Despite what they'll say, wasn't youth, we hit the truth Faces of strummer that fell from the wall But nothing is left where they hung Sweet and bitter, they're what we found So drink them down and Walk out to winter, swear I'll be there Chill will wake you, high and dry, you'll wonder why Walk out to winter, swear I'll be there Chance is buried just below the blinding snow You burn in the breadline and ribbons and all So walk to winter, you won't be late, you always wait This generation, the walk to the wall But I'm not angry, get your gear, get out of here and Walk out to winter, swear I'll be there Chill will wake you, high and dry, you'll wonder why Walk out to winter, swear I'll be there Chance is buried just below the blinding snow Walk out to winter, swear I'll be there Chill will wake you, high and dry, you'll wonder why Walk out to winter, swear I'll be there You blind, snow blind, this is why, this is why

Highland Hard Rain - get it and discover genius of Roddy Frame. Blagged our way into Shepherds Bush in 1989, claiming we were Scottish, despite my East london accent. Roddy - the man
Fab. I think the more frantic, less-produced album version is better (no keyboards, guitars sooo fast! - and female backing singers). I have this track on album (High Land, Hard Rain), 7-inch, 12" (actually bought in the 1980s!) and I've even used CD decks to fuse the album track with the 12" extended version which I may post here..... Roddy is a star!!!!
Video filmed in Hythe, but this is a little love letter to East Kilbride which is Roddy's home town and remains bloody baltic every winter to this day. Good for the snow.
@roddyframe123456 My dad hated pop music, with very few exceptions, The Specials and some Propaganda, come to mind. Also remember him remarking on how Killermont Street, was highly unusual amongst my record collection, as you could actually hear every word he sang!
@earlscourtsw10 Most of this was filmed in Hythe, Kent. The telephone box at 00:30 is at the end of Albert Road. I lived there at the time the video was shot (can't remember when, but must've been between '82 and '84) Some of the shots near the end are out towards Dungeness.

Met in the summer and walked 'til the fall
And breathless we talked, it was tongues
Despite what they'll say, wasn't youth, we hit the truth
Faces of strummer that fell from the wall
But nothing is left where they hung
Sweet and bitter, they're what we found
So drink them down and
Walk out to winter, swear I'll be there
Chill will wake you, high and dry, you'll wonder why
Walk out to winter, swear I'll be there
Chance is buried just below the blinding snow
You burn in the breadline and ribbons and all
So walk to winter, you won't be late, you always wait
This generation, the walk to the wall
But I'm not angry, get your gear, get out of here and
Walk out to winter, swear I'll be there
Chill will wake you, high and dry, you'll wonder why
Walk out to winter, swear I'll be there
Chance is buried just below the blinding snow
Walk out to winter, swear I'll be there
Chill will wake you, high and dry, you'll wonder why
Walk out to winter, swear I'll be there
You blind, snow blind, this is why, this is why
