When GP40's shared mainline duties,so much had changed even in the four years you depict on here. Good times back then! thanks for sharing!!! SP forever!!!
Southern Pacific, as it was meant to be seen; multi-unit consists, long trains and not one damn UP engine anywhere. You have captured the true essence of the Spirit that truly Won the West
Great to see all the Rio Grande units. When they spread out over the S.P. system, I was filming S.P.s junk coughing and puking the way up the Moffatt Line...
This was just a great video, where do I start. Lots and lots of Southern Pacific everything. Tunnel Motors and my favorite units The GP60. Love the GP60, 3800 Horsepower on 4 axles. The Nathan P3 horn, The Gray and Red paint scheme that almost always looked like it’s been through hell. One thing more it was a delight too see trains with No God Damn Graffiti on it. Try railfanning today, it’s one long piece of crap from start to finish. Really is a turn off. Man the Good Old Days, Did we know it at the time? Again, Great Video, Thanks.
LOVE YOU SOUTHERN WHEN I WAS 7 ONE OF YOUR ENGINEERING CREW GAVE A KID A RIDE . LET ME DRIVE ON THE SIDE RAILS AND ALL. NEVER FOR GET IT. HE HAD HIS FOOT ON THE DEAD MANS BREAK TO. THX YOU J YARD
SP used to pickup oranges and lemons from packing houses in Orange, Villa Park, and Tustin. This was about 1/4 mile from my house. A flood in 1969 took out the main train bridge.
My favorite engines from Southern Pacific have got to be the SD40T-2 tunnel motors with snoot noses. Those and the regular nose tunnel motors and the SD45T-2 tunnel motors. But in some way I do dislike the "Cotton Belt" although it was indeed an affiliate of SP.
One is a standard dual sealed beam headlight, the other is an EMD "Oscitrol" light, which was an electronic version of a Mars light without those pesky moving parts.
@@FFred-us9tw then I was misinformed by an SP website. Thanks for the correction. I suppose the site said it was EMD's because EMD offered it as an option.
@@fmnut These GP 40-2swere he last to use this setup. Shortly after delivery, Sant Fe management, which controled SP and SF ordered all units to use single headlight and rotating roof lights!
@@fmnut The reason the 7200 series GP 40s were all lettered for the SSW was because the SSW being a subsidiary of the SP, was in better financial health and financed all of these units, not to mention that SSW was based out of Dallas,TX therefore offering better tax breaks on equipment than California! These were the last GP 40s built by EMD ! The SP liked them so much , The SP power boss at the time literaly begged EMD to build this batch, long after EMD only had the GP 50 available. When the SP wanted more and EMD said no, SP started to test the GP 60.
YOU Have awsome collection of historical footage. I miss those dirty tunnel motors.& bloody nose.. do you have any kotochrome SP Or SF. Of the. SPSF. Pre merger? ?? thank you for putting out video. .. mr Fairbanks. Old. stormy

We didn't know how good we had it back then until it was all gone.
@@whiteknightcat It's nice to see the units with the full lights package. I miss the old gyralights.
And not a widecab in sight. Nice video sir.
Well done! Reliving the railroad of my youth through the eye of your lens.

Back when GP60's were brand new!!! Today UP still has them running around doing local duties
There is a Southern Pacific caboose at the Fullerton station that they are fixing up.
Truly one of the finest rr videos I’ve seen to date!!
I’ve been a HUGE SP fan for 50 years.
Thanks for sharing!!

NS seems to be very happy with their logo lol
Great video the old Southern Pacific
I miss the Southern Pacific. I’m southwest of Houston along the Sunset Route.

High hoods puttin the work in too
What's up with the rear headlight setup on the two Geeps at 15:45?
One is a standard dual sealed beam headlight, the other is an EMD "Oscitrol" light, which was an electronic version of a Mars light without those pesky moving parts.
@@fmnut Just an FYI, EMD was not the manufacturer of the Oscitrol light. Mercor corporation was.

What does SSW on the front of the engine mean?
St. Louis Southwestern nicknamed the "Cotton Belt" route, an SP subsidiary.

Do you have footage of the abandoned west Phoenix line? I really want to see some footage of it being active.
How did you ever have the time to film all these railroad videos you've done? There all great. And all over the country. & world?
Lots of long weekends, 5 weeks vacation a year, a flexible boss and a very understanding wife.
Awsome video, do miss the sp and seeing 4 axle units on main line trains. In shot of Colton yard was that pepper st, you where filming on? Arthur.
South Pepper Avenue

see my video ATSF Transcon 1989 for a few Kodachromes.
is this when rio grande just bought sp? lovely
The sale of SP to DRGW was in August 1998. These scenes are from 1989 and 1992 which accounts for the number of unpatched Rio Grandes.
i like your videos
