    I like your low overhead ideas! The zip tie is genius, and dirt cheap. Some of their channels have hundreds of thousands of dollars in equipment that they don’t even fully utilize to their potential. Good job !

    Hi Chris - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. A very neat, fast and cheap log measuring idea. I've started to use an old fiberglass tent pole J-B Welded to a connector nut that attaches to the bar retention studs. It works well but assuming your zip tie stays out at 90 degrees when bucking I think your system is superior so I'll convert. A lot of operators appear to be frightened of bucking from a wood pile like yours but provided to keep an eye on the tip at all times it is a very efficient system. I used to buck 200 cords a year in wood piles like yours and you soon learn all the tricks to work safely and productively.

      Hi Chris - It's Big Rodders here. You are effective running a taller gear so you increase your chain speed by 14%. The downside is the possibility of bogging down in difficult wood, like going up a hill in your truck in 5th gear when you really should be in 4th. Also, you need to calculate that you're not running the chain faster than its specified top speed. That could be an issue since the XP is such a high revving engine to start with. Keep on Bucking.

    Dremel makes an attachment for the Dremel tool for sharpening chainsaw chains. I use my Dremel tool to keep my chain saw chains sharpened. No, I don't work for Dremel. If you want to cut firewood up quickly, find a saw mill round blade that's hooked up to a tractor's belt drive with a cradle rig for the pulp logs. Running a round saw mill blade into pulp logs is like taking a hot knife through a stick of butter. With three guys, two for loading the logs and one taking the rounds as they are cut you can get a huge pile of firewood in a short time. Like any equipment, be very careful working around that saw mill blade. Many winters I used a 15 lb. solid iron splitting maul to split firewood. I remember February 22, 2013, here in Northern Michigan when the temperature outside was 22 degrees (F) below zero, the inside temperature in my cabin was 70 degrees (F) and the spring coil temperature gauge on my wood stove was 600 degrees (F).

    Well, well, I just happened to stumble upon the original zip tie, handy, dandy, measuring device video!
    It' funny watching you try to measure within 1/8 in. In this video and then nowdays when you just glance at it and haul ass bucking the pile!
    It does become most natural with time.
    And to think only a year ago I was using a 16 in. stick and red spray paint. Lol

    O yes the ole measuring device… built my own with a magnet but that got in the way. Always had the old faithful stick to rely on but then seen a ad for a last that clipped on your grip. Kinda neat but still can never trust it but I need to use it more to put faith in it. I’ve been using the 16 in stick as my favorite so far and kinda what I like best. Zip tie seems like a good idea though. Love your channel new subscriber keep this up. You are motivating me to expand my small firewood business.

    I tried this using the biggest zip ties I could find and even in warmer temps. they kept breaking. For the way I get and cut wood, I ordered a tool called Acc-U-Mark (the magnetic thing that sticks to your bar) and so far it works great. If I were cutting into piles like you it might not work to well but Im cutting down one log at a time. I can even eyeball it pretty well but need to be uniform cuts for bundles.

    A video watched and commented on a little late but I like the zip-tie idea. A few years ago I started using something similar. I had a few of those hunters orange rubber ties from Home Depot. (Those flexible all purpose ones with a wire in the center which bend and twist anyway you want for tieing things down or whatever) I measured them out and wrapped them around the bar. You can bend them out of the way when not in use or you can take them off as soon as your not actually cutting rounds. Last year I thought I was good enough and experienced enough to measure by sight. I was close but not close enough.... So this year I will go back to what I was doing before or I will try your technique.

      Michael!!! That is a great idea, I will give it a try!

  • @bwillan
    @bwillan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That is a handy tip for measuring your firewood. Andrew at Eastonmade has an actual Husqvarna made PVC rod on a hinge that mounts to the right side of the saw. He showed it in one video. With the volume of logs you have, I would think a firewood processor would be in order. Bucking and splitting that pile into firewood has you touching the wood too many times.

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Zip tie. Great idea! You could use your leaf blower to get the saw dust off the log pile once in a while. So it wouldn’t be so slippery.

  • @PabloP169
    @PabloP169 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great idea but I did note that working back from the other end of the logs that you would "eyeball" the length rather than using the measuring device. I can't say that it fusses me at all as I tend to eyeball all my cutting lengths as my wood is all for my own open fireplace. Also, you do get a good feel for length when regularly cutting.

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct, I don't always use it. But sometimes I noticed that on video you can't see what I see and a lot of the time I am using it without stopping to verify it. I just see it on the side and use it as a guide to eyeball it by spotting a point to cut on the log. Thanks Rob!

      “Shooting the fines” means that the duller your saw gets the finer the saw dust coming out of your saw gets when you are cutting. I was not insulting you. It happens often when cutting firewood of the pile. Dirty wood, wood pile right on the ground and so on. Very good work on both of your parts though. I wish I could have a guy to help me like that.
