What the real problem is, it means the worldwide production of color film is centered in one company, at one factory located in Rochester. (Adox / Orwo doesn't really count unless you like your colors slightly weird and grainy.) That is a perilous supply situation, one disruption away from disaster.
Sorry to say, but I believe the days of colour film arw counted. If Kodak alaris gets sold to someone uninterested in keep color film, it's will be just gone!! Oh but Eastman Kodak produces the films... Yes, it's true, BUT, there are strong believe that Alaris owns the film patents except from TriX and Ektachrome which is also motion picture films. So, either we'll all migrate to Ecn2 and hope Eastman Kodak keeps it's production or that's it.

If Fuji doesn't want *completely* out of the film game to the point where they're just relabeling Kodak and Ilford films with the Fujifilm logo, it means they are paying a decent amount of money to Ilford and Kodak. It's still considerably cheaper than resurrecting their dismantled film division, and Kodak definitely needs money. So there's that!
I agree and disagree. It means production of Ilford and Kodak are diverted away from their own brands also. Plus they sell at a wholesale rate and means less profits for Kodak and Ilford….meaning they have to push up prices to allow Fujifilm to have a margin….. oh look prices have gone up 3 years running. @@andrewwilliams4072 I think all the major film brands have always been making film for other people. I used to buy Walgreens branded film and I'm pretty sure that was Fuji relabeled. I could be wrong on that but that film always came with the Fuji style clear canisters.
If I were running Kodak, I would try to make a deal with Fujifilm to reproduce whatever film they want to be sold under the Fujifilm brand for the Japanese market IF Fujifilm were to allow Kodak to produce discontinued Fujifilm stocks under a new Kodak brand name in the rest of the world. If Fujifilm is content to allow 400H, Superia, and so on, to only exist as patents, and not actual film to buy, it would benefit both companies, and the film industry, if Kodak were to sell Kodak FG Superia, or whatever they'd call it, with Fujifilm getting a cut for owning the patent of that particular recipe.
I saw this coming for years, sadly. I've been buying Superia 400 in 3 packs all over the place and hoarding them in my fridge. Now it looks like it's finally time to start giving some of the rolls away to people who weren't as paranoid...

I have been slammed here in TH-cam comments for years now - mostly on nicos news - for being a Fujifilm hater…..which I am not….I’m actually a deep Fujifilm LOVER and hence why I am so adamant about this situation…..and so vocal. Fujifilm does not make film anymore….. yep…..you heard me. They haven’t made film for years…. They have deleted stocks and blamed materials…..yet Kodak and Ilford continue to find materials…..ORWO and others are developing films. How are they getting materials? I have worked for a Japanese company for almost 20ys so I have some insight in how they operate and how they communicate- internally and externally. I also understand Japanese businesses and how they operate better than most westerners. I believe they have been selling frozen stock for years….they made bulk last runs. They assumed that film would die….and estimated XX time to go and hence we need so many rolls. They then closed the lines and redeveloped the land. I would suggest the factory is no longer - the machines have been recycled (hence why they couldn’t be sold when FP100 was deleted). Why so sure of myself? Well check TH-cam - there are factory tours of Ilford and Kodak - where you can see machines making film. Where are Fujifilm and their marketing dept…. Invite Nico or Matt day or grainy days. Some well recognised TH-cam that is film centric. Fuji invites them to come and see the production line…. do it Fujifilm….I dare you!!!
X-tra 400 is available here in Japan. The thing is they put a new sticker with the description in Japanese on top of the original package that’s written in English.
Fuji has one job to produce slide film and somehow they can't even do that when Kodak and Ilford make all their negative films. they'll probably end up asking Kodak to reformulate Ektachrome so they can rebrand it as Fujichrome
A myth in the film community said that Fuji dismantled all their production lines in the 00’s and they only sell freeze rolls till now… sadly all things ends and they don’t have any stock left, that’s why they have discontinued film stock after film stock in the recent years…
With Fuji superia it's very critical not to underexpose it. The light meter in my Pentax k1000 stopped working correctly and I got some muddy images or the greenish color cast. I was using 400 speed film. Luckily I decided to switch to a light meter app on my phone part way through the role and those photos were fine. It was also an overcast day.
Unfortunately, they are done making their own film. The Color negative film I couldn't care less about, but velvia and provia are going to be a huge loss.
There’s a good chance that FUJIFILM is no longer producing any film at all, color or b/w, and Kodak seems to be the only company on this planet still running a live color film manufacturing line. This seems to be the only logical conclusion and a hard truth..
I would say thats partially but not totally correct. I just received 20 rolls of very fresh Provia and Velvia film in 120 format. Dated 04-2025 or later. All labeled as being made in Japan.
I loaded the Fuji 400 on my konica A4 and got the scans a while ago. Idk but all of my shots without flash taken outdoors with sunny weather and taken indoors w/o flash were dim af. It was so dark and grainy so I can’t post process it to save the shots. The ones taken with flash were fine. I thought it was an isolated case and maybe I was the problem or my cam but someone from my photography group had the same experience. Using p&s, flashed photos were ok, photos w/o flash were all dark. Idk what’s the problem with the films distributed to our country. This was the first time I encountered this problem.
Thank you for using your 1990s lens to assess the situation, but this is 2023 and with global regulation and environmental factors of chemistry being tighter than ever and getting tighter, the ONLY way we will have film at all in the future is if Kodak, Fujifilm, Harman, and a few others work together to make it happen. The companies have always fought publicly while cooperating, standardizing and cross-licensing behind the scenes. There is evidence they still are working together and that should bring you relief. So dream all you want about the "good old days" when your favorite film stock was available anywhere, preach your doom and gloom! Then when film is new and sustainable and still available in 5 years, remember to thank them!

I absolutely love it too. Very consistent performance and works specially well with home processing. I have had some issues with some Kodak stock, but every Superia that has gone into my development tank has came out beautiful!
Fuji Superia x-tra 400 is my favorite and go to 35mm film stock. It was the most cost effective and favorite colors for me. This sucks, I don’t even like using Kodak stocks except for their 120 roll films.

I don’t think this is as bad as you think it is. Fuji is struggling to get the materials to make film and are having great success with their digital cameras. If they didn’t care about film they would just completely abandon it. They wouldn’t really miss it and they don’t need it. But now they’re paying Kodak and oldies to make it for them, showing they are still somewhat committed.
Damn. I liked Superia a lot, better than the Kodak equivalent. Recently decided to switch to Portra 160/400 and Ektar for color and experimenting to find a favorite BW filmstock. Good timing for me to move away from Superia lol

It's hard for me to belive about high demand of the film. Sure there is more interest now that it was 10 years ago, but to produce this much of shortage is just, I don't know.
Fuji is slowly getting out of the film business, every year there is another discontinuation of another product line. The only thing I hope they do is when they cancel there film production they sell there equipment to another film producer like Afga, Foma, because the last thing we need is a monopoly of color film from Kodak- Alaris.

@Phillip Banes I'm talking about motion pictures, not stills. Compare IMAX to the highest resolution sensor. I think IMAX still has the advantage by quite a wide margin.

The “new” film is actually a great film to shoot. Great contrast, excellent sharpness, bold colors, fantastic skin tones, great film look right out of the gates, takes flash like champ and maybe more importantly a great alternative to Portra 400. Your bank account will be happy. At least we got some sort of replacement. I get losing X-Tra 400 is a bitter pill to swallow for a lot of folks however this new film is great. Certainly nothing I’ve ever shot before which I think is a great things for the industry as a whole. There’s a silver lining here in my humble opinion.
Fujicolor superia xtra 400 is not discontinued untill there is an official statement from Fujifilm like with pro 400h. Or they could just repackage Portra 400 with pro400 logo😂
You seem disappointed that it’s still mostly made in the USA. I am very glad we are keeping as much film making in the USA. 🎉 🇺🇸 When Fuji catches up they will make their film wherever they want.

Fuji had a South Carolina plant, where film was actually spooled and packaged. In Greenwood, SC.

I have a freezer full of superia, I love it. I know its not everyone's favorite but I'm really glad I stocked up on it.

Fuji is good at making cameras and Kodak is good at making film. As long as there is a color film supply, I am okay with it.
