I'm surprised putting them down into the soaked soil didn't make them rot

Holes in the bottom meant it was only wet when he put it in on video. Next day the water has all drained out.

I thought about doing this but I never got around to it. I'll do it now that I've seen that it works. Well done.

Put hormone rooting powder on the open cuts before drying for a few days. And a clear plastic lid to increase humidity. I root very small pups about 60 at a time by only putting a tiny amount of powder where it's snapped off from the mother plant, dry for 3 days, plant and water lightly with a spray bottle before spraying water all over the insides of a clear storage container. The ehole tray of popus goes inside there and keeps the humidity high. Within 4 weeks I have roots a few centimetres long. It's not humid here very often, mostly dry air so the clear box sprayed with water increases the humidity. I have had some work that wouldn't put out any roots after 10 weeks in a normal open pot. 0 roots in 10 weeks versus 5 roots in 4 weeks.

Any kind that makes pups and even columnar cactus. I have about 40 columnar cactus and all except 3 old ones have worked. But columnar cactus must be facing the right way up or laying down flat.

does cutting it into multiple pieces help it root? I have chopped the top off my mammillaria polythele and its been 4.5 months and no root formation yet. any tips? its slowly losing its mass as its running out of water

It's far better just to snap the pup off by twisting and put hormone powder on the part that's snapped off and dry for 3 days. What ISN'T mentioned here is that you NEED a humid environment. With big cuttings it doesn't matter. With small ones it does. Yoi can do this by putting the pot inside a clear plastic container WITH a lid, and spraying water inside the container and on the inside of the lid. KEEP it closed and in 4 weeks the humidity will cause it to get roots. I have found just the humidity ALONE makes a huge difference. I have done 60 small pups at a time this way with only 1 in 15 not having roots. By small pups I mean things the size of one finger knuckle, sometimes smaller.
