SISTER TILLY
(words & music by Natalie Merchant)
Oh, Miss Tilly, I think you should know everyone’s missing you here -
with your hair a mess in your outdated dress,
when Halston was all the rage back in your Chelsea Girl days.
Oh, Miss Tilly, I think you should know everyone’s missing you here -
your bright yellow walls and your pashmina shawls,
crystals, chimes and your moonflower vines,
tinctures, teas and your secret remedies,
and your voice like Buffy Sainte Marie.
I just can’t believe that you’re gone,
that you’ve gone so far away.
Oh, Miss Tilly, I think you should know everyone’s missing you here -
fortune telling cards, prayer flags in the yard,
Rilke poems and your stacks of Mother Jones,
your feminist raves in your Didion shades,
and your Zeppelin so loud and so proud.
Here’s to your days at the barricades.
Here’s to the girls in the fray.
Oh, how we wish you could stay.
But you’re gone; you’ve gone so far away.
Sister Tilly, you go on without us.
Sister Tilly, you don’t think about us now.
Everything fades away.
Sister Tilly, you’re a superpower.
Sister Tilly, you’re a lotus flower now.
Everything fades away.
Sister Tilly, you’re a constellation.
Sister Tilly, you’re a white light vibration now.
Everything fades away.
No craving for sensation,
no want, and no temptation now.
Tears fall down like rain.
No fear and no delusion,
no doubt and no confusion now.
Tears fall down like rain.
There’s nothing but the big forever,
there’s nothing but a sweet surrender now.

She makes music that makes all men cry ...God bless this woman.😂
Her music always touches your soul.
You are causing me to weep, Natalie. I was born in 1967. I can't help but get emotional.
It’s a shame this album did not get more accolades than it rightfully deserved. Masterpiece from beginning to end.
My favourite Natalie album,,,
Somehow this song makes me mourn the loss of the person I used to be.
This is genius. Natalie sings what my heart doesn't know how to speak. Once again.
Artist. Pay attention, youngsters. There's not many left.
Thank you for keeping us on a higher level, Natalie Merchant 💕
Thank you, Natalie. Jacqueline Roper Stackhouse was my Miss Tilly. Took me to my first March on Washington when I was 50 and she was 80 (it wasn’t her first, and wasn’t her last).
RIP, Auntie J. It’s my turn to carry the torch…❤
Natalie is the best singer.
I am a 62 year old "girl in pink on a milk white horse"...actually she's an old grey mare, as arthritic as I am but when we are together, I am reminded of this song, the lyrics filling my heart with the joy of a quiet ride on my wee beastie girl.
Somehow the world is right when Natalie sings.
Only Natalie can make music that makes this 58 year old man cry...
Same age. Same response. :)
Same here😢
Saw her in Philly and she herself was breaking down singing it. ❤️❤️❤️
Me too, as this was beautiful ❤
I was driven to tears in a van with hand painted Flowers and a peace sign on it whilst listening to this song. 🌺 🌼 ☮️
Incredibly moving
She should allow comments on her older classic songs 😢
Just realised that one of the finest ever singer-songwriters celebrated her 60th birthday yesterday. I have been listeming to Natalie Merchant since first hearing 'Trouble Me' on late night radio, back in 1989.
So pleased that she is still writing new material, touring and sounding great. After waiting more than 5 years since her last UK tour, it is now just over 2 weeks until the long drive down from Yorkshire to Bath to see her play live once again.
The world deeply is in need of personalities like you are. Full of humanity and a voice so mild and strong at the same time, stones start to melt when you start to sing. ❤
Natalie is the true epitome of an artist and entertainer! I can’t help but appreciate how she’s aged gracefully. Like she’s embraced it and adds it to her box of inspiration. It’s inspiring to me as I feel like I see the opposite promoted in mainstream media. This video is beautiful and she is beautiful, I LOVE IT!! Thank you for continuing to make music and share it with everyone ❤
You are so iconic. I've been an avid fan since 10000 Maniacs. Your Tiger Lilly and Ophelia albums got me through rough times. Your voice is like an old friend, never to be forgotten. Your music surrounds me, melodic like a soft cardigan sweater. Your words are like the memories and wisdom of elders calling attention to the past and how it impacts the present and future. Beautiful, just simply beautiful.
Ditto. You said everything I was feeling. ❤️
I couldn't agree more!!!
Perfectly said, and I concur!
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
So nicely put xx
Only concert I went to with my mom was Natalie Merchant. And this song reminds me so much of her. Even though she worked for lawyers, the hippy never left her. She passed away in October 2018 and I miss her so much!
❤ here's to missing moms. Take care and celebrate the legacy she left in you ~
I didnt know she passed away How old was she?? im A 76 yr old aussie singer songwriter who was given her album Ophelia by my ex son in law yrs ago. I think her voice is so special and her song kind and generous will be on my top 100 song list im comipiling . Sorry and sad shes gone🤔💔💓🙏💋❤️
The honor of these women who paved our way lives these song lines. Thank you, Natalie. What a treasure.
I took my 10 year old (now 35) to see Natalie in Reno, Nevada 25 years ago and neither of us will ever forget that performance...flawless as she is today! ❤
Every Time
I Hear Your Voice
I Want To Pray
Her voice still sounds like its 1990, amazing!
No, I hear the age, like fine wine. A little more resonant, more warmth.
@@CorePathway I saw here live a few months ago, and listened to live recordings on youtube from years ago. Really liked the older voice. Its deep.
I'd be SO down to hear her and Annie Lennox do a duet. Mind would be BLOWN.
We look back thru a window. The window has closed, but we still see what was...
Have listened to this four times now and serious tears every time. Of both joy and failure to achieve. But not done yet...Onward and furthur..... ANTHEM!!!
First time hearing or seeing this. I’m 66 and boy does this take me back. Once a young feminist, now an old one.
Wow. My failing health. Yesterday is still new. Tomorrows forgotten. On a bridge we sit. A sun yet to set. Water flows on by. Hold my hand Natile, sing our song.
Thanks for making me cry love you
Vietnam era vet. Was gung ho those days. I was wrong. That war was wrong. I wish I could go back.
brave of you to say
I HERE You Brave Soul….
Deeply moved to tears. Beautiful song.
Yes. I cried.
We are still here ,
we love and cry - we won.
My wife of 34 years and I watched this amazing video from her Long Term Care bed, due to FTD/Alzheimers and she asked: "are we going to die" and I answered "yes we are someday, but not today"... (I silently cried in my car) and drove home to our dog. XOXO Thank you Ms. Natalie!
😢❤
If you like this song, I recommend the Song Exploder podcast episode in which Natalie talks about the song and how she wrote it. It's really something.
Thank you for the recommendation. It's a great podcast!
Happy Birthday from France.
Born in 1963 too and big fan of yours since 1986.
Humankind is so depressing at times.
Thanks God there are people like you, to renew our faith 😊
Natalie there is nothing during your entire career that I have not
enjoyed including many of your shows across my home state (and yours I
do believe), New York. You have spoken for so many people who have no
voice in our society. You are an amazing lady that I have respected so
much since 10K Maniacs were your band. Keep it going Natalie!!
Natalie Merchant doesn’t just make music, but creates the finest of Arts, evoking profound experiences, and multiple emotions. She is one of a very small number of creators who can consistently create at this level. ❤
She was incredible in Dublin last week, most amazing performance, best concert ever!!!
Yes, she was extraordinary, for me too best concert ever!
Natalie and I go way back. She doesn't know it, but her music saved me.
Beautifully, well sung with such feeling…. Tears
That’s so beautiful. Thank you, Natalie.
I'm trying to write something like this for my beautiful big sister that we lost to drug addiction. 😢this is so perfect
I **LOVE** Natalie Merchant. This is beautiful.
…merchant is so intutive. My Mom drove a VW, had Macrame, musk oil, etc….took as to San Francisco one year for school shopping.
What a sweet tribute.
They fought for women's rights and now we need them more than ever. Here's hoping our young women of today take up the banner women like me are too old to carry.
I am a fan of the art. That such beautiful music, the violins, mandolin, horns, voice, lyrics, all can come from human beings is a gift to ourselves. Ms. Merchant is simply the chosen vehicle and we are quite fortunate to have her. My eye's welled when I first heard this tribute. Thank you Natalie.
Sister Tilly made me cry. Natalie has such a soul....such a heart...such a voice! THANK YOU
Love this song. She still has talent.
I've got my Natalie up so loud, on repeat, So Proud!!!!
Oh, my word. This is the beauty that will heal the world.
yes
Wonderful tribute to all our women who've left us, Natalie we love you.
I grew up listening to the 10,000 Maniacs ! Always love Natalie for her lovely voice and activism.💕💕💕👸🏻🌻✌️
No temptation or confusion anymore ☮️🪷🙏✝️
This woman sings 1000 times better than the ones that are popular today. Novody sings like her and her voice will always sound like pancakes in the mountains 💚
But this song is simply a tribute to yuppies
full body chills
Voice of an angel
I've been a huge fan for 30+ years. Is this song about the modern day threat to women?
I just shared this song with my sisters 🙏☮️🪷🎧🤗
She performed this at a recent outdoor concert we attended in Woodinville, Wash. and I now stand transfixed by the beauty and power of her tribute. This is the first time I had seen this video and it matches the painter's-quality artistry of Natalie's lyrics. Thank you, Natalie, for performing (for only the second time!) another of my favourite tributes ("King of May") of yours that evening! I was singing along. And thank you for being such a beautiful soul.
First there was the song, so hauntingly beautiful. Now it has been brought to life with this short film documenting a generation who fought so hard for a better world. I pray that in leaving this behind, Natalie might inspire the younger generation to continue the hard work of fighting those who would send us back into the dark ages. We need hope and hard work. Thank you for this art, Natalie. 💕
May peace reign and all the flower people shine! Be bright yellow!
Very beautiful. We're the same age, and I relate to the nostalgia and respect for the generation before us that made our lives easier. Natalie doing what the best artists do - lending their beauty to dignify the other.
EXACTLY.
We need to keep this going for future generations.
Me too. Same age to just barely remember the Flower Children. How beautiful they were. They are leaving too soon. I wish I had been a part of it.
Since I discovered Natalie Merchant in the 90's, it's never been hard for me to answer the question "who is your favorite musician?"
Beautiful. All this footage of free spirits united to bring peace and justice to all.
She sings to your soul. Thank you Natalie!
Everytime the craziness and fear begins to seemingly win.......you arrive.
Thank you Natalie. (If I may)
She has the same face she had 20 years ago. I'll have what she's having. Her music always helped me with my depression. Thank you. :-)
She's quite the elixir.

I am 58 and very conservative now, but hippie chicks still rule!
🤣 ☮️
We need more Sister Tilly's.
I hope bc she’s talking about Jennifer Tilly. ♥️❤️♥️
Natalie's pop hooks & profound lyrics remain intact. Beautiful, moving video with that unmistakable voice I love it🎉❤🎉❤
I love her voice, thank you Natalie
Beautiful video. Seeing Natalie's neck scar should remind us how lucky we are to still have her making music and sounding better than ever. xoxo
What happened to her neck?

This is so good …thank you , Natalie , I needed this , we all did !!!
Hi. Thanks for keeping this open for comments.
Natalie all I can say is “Hello in There”
😊
I'm excited for this video release, but then again, I get excited for everything Natalie.
Saw Natalie in concert a couple days ago and I'm love, love love still basking in the glow of the event at Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA. She's a talented artist with a voice that penetrates your soul. Been a fan for 40 yrs. Love, love, love ❤Natalie. Please don't stop making music.
Could not hold back tears. Thank you Natalie.
That was unreal. I got tears. Now I have to learn all there is to know about Joan Didion. Natalie your an angel. You've always been. Love you with all my heart forever.
Voice remains strong - meaningful lyrics. Go Natalie!
What a beautiful lady 🌺
You could just imagine the music in heaven
Best song of 2024
I love every single song and every performance. 🩵💛🩵
Love her. Love this.
Natalie is bar none my all time No1 artist x 👏💜👍🙏🤗♿️
#ForeverPromotingPositiveDisabilityAwareness
This is my favorite track on the album!
She has such an amazing voice
Your voice is timeless.
My sister always was a badass. I am sending this to her to start an argument.
_top-notch tribute_ to _'Miss Tilly'_ 'n' lionhearted-women of a bygone era, _like Joan Didion_ - pure retro gold! bit of 60's vibes, bit of Zep, a straight-up reminisce of Vietnam war protests 'n' women fightin' for change. Tilly's now this stellar _'lotus flower',_ tellin' us to just _'crack on without us'._ 🪷
_buzzing to hear it at Paladium next week!_ 👏
_...as Kerouac on the Road, howling with Ginsberg's verse, Tilly sails life's river, bearing Woolf's Lighthouse, on Siddhartha's eternal course..._
Tilly’s reflection _“Bringing It All Back Home”_ calls,
As Kerouac's _'On The Road'_ whispers caught in beats.
Didion’s gaze, Rilke’s verse in memory’s seats,
Siddhartha’s lotus blooms, symbol of strength repletes.
_“Go forth, free spirit,”_ a white-light salutes,
In sweet surrender to ‘forever’, _resilience_ takes roots.
_“Through the rain, you remain, our Tilly”_ - a tale of longing, on our hearts it’s wrote, _as life always denotes._
Beautiful lady beautiful soul
My son was nine when I took him to her Leave Your Sleep tour. His name is Elijah and she talked to him 3X from the stage. We gave her a gift bag full of Texas stuff. He's 23 now. Seriously, where does the time go? So much has happened in between that time. Divorce, new marriage, 5 surgeries, and so much more. Natalie has been the background music of my life since I was 17. I'm almost 54 now.
Natalie is still an iconic, beautiful vocalist that should be heard by everyone!
Saw Sister Merchant sing this simple piece of magic this year. It's my favorite song from Keep Your Courage. Natalie if you ever read these comments --- Come back to Cleveland SOON!
Love and light to all women of this world!! ❤
You still have a beautiful voice. I loved your music in high school in the late 90's. You rock girl
Gorgeous
I have always felt an affinity with your lyrics.
This entire album takes my breath away.
