Mr. Yohei HInoki Japanese Ace Pilot (English Sub)

  • These days Japanese people can read about westerner great Ace fighter pilots such as Gregory Boyington and Erich Hartmann through English works translated into Japanese. However, it is disappointing that most books about Japanese legendary Ace fighter pilots such as "Crimson Wing" by Yohei Hinoki and "The Ace of Japan" by Sadaaki Akamatsu have not been translated into English. These works would add more context to the experiences of fighter pilots through the years from a different perspective.

Mark of a true leader: Major Katoh tested the plane before any of his pilots set foot in one. That's something that modern officers and enlisted folks can learn from.

he was able to shoot down P51s in an Oscar. amazing. after his leg was blown off, he vowed to shoot down more P51s. they put a wooden peg to his leg and, being short on pilots, sent him up. he was able to down one more P51 before the end of the war. a true ace.

Based on what I have read the Ki-100 was top notch and a good match with anything the Allies had. The later prototypes were wicked fast. There were production quality issues, weaker metals being used, low quality fuel, and inexperienced pilots.

Brave airmen, soldiers, sailors and marines on all sides. Many of whom died needlessly while betrayed by their leaders. War is evil and preventable. It gives murder merit, justification and glorification. The devils hand at play.
I salute this brave and honorable guy who believed that he was defending his nation and find his story fascinating. I also appreciate the sacrifice and courage of all that served. Once again though I say this: War is NOT the answer. X

I think one of the biggest issues keeping people from learning about the Japanese surviving aces was the simple fact so few made it to the end of the war. As per usual the fighting men had to bleed and burn so the suits at high command could get their way.

Well japaneses with their zeros and havyabushas etc were the best planes at the start of the war. But when the Mustang came, their glory was gone. However, the american F4 and hellcats were a bit better but not as realible.

@gdub454 given, they were weak in terms of armor (kates and vals were bombers.) but this guy managed to pull off something as incredible as shooting down mustangs in an "obsolete" Ki43. that takes a lot of skill and guts. and yes, the oscar looks like the frank. and I still stand by my statement that KI84>P51 (frank was faster by 20 or so KPH, much more agile too)... if you don't believe me check out the stats that the USAF boys put out flying a frank after the war.

@Oldsmobile442Estella Bull manure!!!1 It was not better then the any of the fighters you mentioned. I've seen primary documents pertaining to the Ki-84 and it was not even as fast as the F6F much less the P-51 ,P-47 or P-38. I wouldn't say it was even as hard hitting as any of the USAAF-USN fighters.
