    As a Brazilian myself, Roots is an album that means so much to me. Capoeira, Brazilian music styles like Maracatu, Samba, Baião and more, shoutouts to important figures like Chico Mendes (an advocate for the human rights of indigenous people), Brazilian folklore, the list goes on. The classic 'Ditadura nunca mais' cry (Dictatorship, never again) is also present. And much, much more. It's a significant album, a smartly crafted one. This was Sepultura embracing where they come from. I'll always be grateful for that.

    Here in Brazil, Roots, in my opinion, is the most celebrated album by our heavy metal community and musicians in general.
    References to indigenous culture, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Slavery, Christian submission and other subjects of our history and "roots" just make a perfect fit. Plus the music for me is just awesome.

    • @saltpeter7429

      I was about to say I like ROOTS. I do hold BENEATH and ARISE closer to my heart personally, but I thought ROOTS was creative and innovative. Kind of " out there" at the time.
      DIABOLUS was the tour I saw Slayer on twice in one week. I play it all the time. Why fans hate it? Its tuned low. That's it. Otherwise it is a raging Slayer album, Point is killer, Stain of Mind, on and on. I dont think faster is better, it's kind of imbecilic to praise a piece of music based solely upon its BPM ( beats per minute) count.

    Opeth’s “Heritage” gets a lot of hate because it was their transitionary album from their death metal sound to their prog sound, but I love the experimental elements in it. “The Devil’s Orchard” and “Häxprocess” put you in a trance, and songs like “Nepenthe” and “Famine” prove that the prog sound can still be heavy.

    • @chicholino4454
      @chicholino4454 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I love Heritage! The Devil's Orchard is one of my favorite tracks. That solo at the end is so powerful. I enjoy Lines in my Hand a lot too. As far as their clean vocals only phase, I'd rank them like this: 1. Pale Communion 2. In Cauda Venenum 3. Heritage 4. Sorceress
      I like them all though. I'd say Sorceress deserves a reissue with some mixing.

    In a separate comment, I'd like to say that Slayer's Bitter Peace is a strong contender for my favorite Slayer track. It's such an exciting track! I feel it encapsulates the band's career super well. The Thrashy stuff, the more groove-oriented stuff. It's all there. And Paul Bostaph's bass drum sounds delightfully heavy here. Damn!

    • @saltpeter7429
      @saltpeter7429 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've noticed a propensity for some people to slam on Bostaph and the albums he is on while conversely praising any and all older material with Lombardo behind the kit. BOSTAPH is a badass. I enjoy the albums with the two different drummers, each one brings out different aspects or accents of the same band while feeling totally different. GEMINI is a nasty mid tempo brooding off kilter , thunderous death stalk of a tune, while ANGEL OF DEATH is a full bore pulse pounding war beat. I have love for both drummers and the different style and feel they tap into.

    I will boldly state the Black Album is most definitely one of the most overhated metal albums of all time....that album back when I was a 14 year old teen back in the early 90's was the ultimate gateway into the world of metal that is forever....turning 45 years old and still rocking.

  • @theovermatt
    @theovermatt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Roots, Are You Dead Yet?, and Reroute to Remain all kick ass and as far as I'm concerned are discography highlights for each band. I remember Dave Grohl even saying Roots was a top 10 fave album for him, and who the fuck are we to argue? Also completely agree with Once More 'Round the Sun, that's just a fun album from start to finish. I feel like half the hate for that album came from the video for The Motherload, which frankly I thought was hilarious.
    One album I think gets way too much hate is the recent Behemoth album, I Loved You At Your Darkest. It had the unenviable task of following up The Satanist, and honestly I like that they went in a different direction and tried some new things. The atmosphere on the album alone is top-notch.

    I avoided St.Anger for soooo long thanks to the bad reviews. When i finally decided to take a listen i got immediately addicted to the energy.
    I don't care if the snare is making my eardrums bleed, i just love the energy (yeah the lyricst and songwriting are bland but in the context of the band in 2003 its actually not that bad.)

    This reminds me of Decibel's "Defend Your Shitty Taste" column, I love when people try to take albums with a bad reputation and search for the good and try to defend them, I think its artistically so much more valuable than just tearing artists or albums down because its popular to.

It was also a lot more aggro than anything Korn had done in awhile. I do like early Sepultura, but I remember Roots being regarded as some kind of landmark when it came out, then everyone hated it, and now it’s come back around to seemingly high regard from most except the staunchest elitists. Reroute to Remain is amazing, and it got me into In Flames. I do like their four classic era pure melodic death metal albums, but I do think their next four albums are good to exceptional.

    As a brazilian, Roots is a fucking masterpiece for me, it makes me feel proud of being born here everytime i listen to it, and besides that "emotional" side of the album, the sound just slaps harder than most bands that claim themselves as that "death black doom norwegian funeral metal" bullshit or that kind of stuff, Roots just hits different, it is the rage of a nation embodied in a album. I understand the hate for Roots, but this was my gateway into the band. This is still a great album. Diabolus is definitely a second-tier Slayer album at best. But this album was also my gateway into Slayer. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is often considered the worst of the best for Maiden. But this was the album I decided to buy on a whim and was my gateway into the band. I've been listening to metal since I was 5 or 6 years old. King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, Metallica, Scorpions were my early favorites. Followed by Pantera and Skid Row. Pre-internet, it was tough for me to experience some of the essentials like Slayer, Maiden, Priest, etc. I was limited to the rare occurrence I was able to stay up late and was able to catch Headbanger's Ball. Not sure if my musical journey was unique or not. But it wasn't until i reached middle school that I was able to meet some other kids with an interest in heavy music that I was able to really explore the metal world outside of Headbanger's Ball and Hit Paradee magazine.

    i absolutely agree with a few here ,now i do think are you dead yet is kinda a gateway album and its definitely not deserving of being the most popular COB album , but i agree people hate on it too much and its still a decent fun album , and with silence in the snow and reroute to remain , i'm just shocked that people even hate them ,(i'm obviously over-exaggerating here) but i don't know how anybody with healthy functional ears could listen to those and dislike them , they're actually both probably in the top 5 records by each of those bands for me (though i will say one issue i do find with silence in the snow is that the tracks are all kinda similar so listening to the whole thing may be boring but the songs on their own are all great )

    Going back to Roots it certainly has lost abit of its edge, but it was very influential to me, growing up and nu metal being big when I was getting into metal, it was through listening to roots and deciding to check Sepulturas back catalogue that helped expose me to thrash and even death metal to an extent, I still think cut throat and ratamahatta are pretty decent though

    It really makes me scratch my head when it comes to Sepultura Roots and the hate..I was a teenager when it came out and everyone of my friends and everyone else I know in my generation (40 years old) loved it and thought it was an absolute banger in 1996. We were all repping Chaos AD and Roots hard..no one at the time cared about Schizophrenia or BTR nearly as much.. It’s such a trend now for younger people to bash most of the groove heavy stuff that came out in the 90s and only praise 1991 death metal.

    I will defend Trivium's Crusade to the death. It's basically Shogun without screaming, the great choruses, solos, and riffs are all there, there's just barely any screaming, and to be honest, it doesn't need it. It's easily in my top 5. Silence in the Snow is a solid album too, but it's still my second least favorite Trivium album.
    Overkill - The Killing Kind; this used to be my favorite Overkill album. I don't understand the hate, yes it's groovier than their early stuff, but this gets me going more than most of their albums.
    Metallica - Reload; one of my favorite Metallica albums. Every song is enjoyable, but it isn't perfect. The only truly horrendous part is the Marriane Faithfull part in Memory Remains which kind of ruins the song for me.
    Opeth - Morningrise; it's in my top 3. Yes, it's drastically different than all of the albums that followed it, has more black metal and sea shanty acoustic sections, and is more self-indulgent, but I can't help but love it to death. It's not as hated on as Heritage though.
