  • Atlantic Puffins returned to nest at Eastern Egg Rock in Maine after decades of absence, thanks to the work of seabird biologists. Cornell Lab of Ornithology producer David O. Browns pays a visit to the restored colony, the world's first.
The National Audubon Society started Project Puffin in 1973 in an effort to learn how to restore puffins to historic nesting islands in the Gulf of Maine.

Dr. Kress and his project are such an asset to that Lab. What a great success story his project has been. It's so great to see these beautiful birds back where they belong.

30 years ago I spent 3 weeks on Eastern Egg Rock. On a slow day at the end of the research season Steve sent me out to observe Roseate Terns that briefly gathered at one particular spot just before they started their migration; I spent 5 hours switching between my binoculars and a spotting scope trying to read the numbers off their leg bands... BEST DAY EVER!

Interesting story about puffins. Their hearts are often ripped out and treated as delicacies in a lot of countries.

They obtained some Canadian wolves for Yellowstone Park, now they have obtained Newfoundland Atlantic Puffins for Maine. Most of the Bald Eagles in the world are also Canadians. Hey, so am I !!
