It's a testament to Lauper's talent that she didn't shrink under pressure and allow LaBelle to take over. I love how Cindi goes into the high part at approx. 4:22 and Patti says, "...sing!" Brilliant performance.
If you didn't have the chance to see Cyndi Lauper live in her early heydey, it was quite normal for her to take the songs way further than she'd recorded them. She rarely just sang the song. She's always in the moment.
My mom took my aunt to her concert back in the day and my mom wasn’t a fan she was just taking her younger sister but left saying it was the best concert she ever went to and to this day she still says it

I recall poor little Amy Grant standing onstage looking miserable and confused. Then out came the one guest who could keep up with her, Cyndi Lauper. I don't think people expected it because Lauper used a lot of hiccuppy vocal affectations when she first broke nationally, but I had heard her with Blue Angel and knew she had as much power as Labelle. Great, great duet, one of the best ever.
This is THE most iconic performance. I’m just blown away how they just twisted and melted together to create both a vocal and emotional performance for all the years. 🥹♾️🧡

It’s hard to watch this without crying. I was a kids when this aired on tv. I thought it was amazing and never forgot it. I find myself going back to it often not just for the performance but for the ability to momentarily go back to a time when life seemed to simple. When we were allowed to be just kids.

I vividly remember watching this back in 1985. I was at my grandparents and after both performances my grandfather said, "So this is that Laupy-Laupy girl you're so crazy about?" and I said, " I love her!" I was just 14 then and here I am 50 yrs old and still loving Cyndi Lauper!!
