Steam on the Bernese Oberland Railway (BOB)

- Our Swiss adventure continues today with an attractive little tank engine and its train of 4 beautifully restored carriages. The locomotive numbered “14” is a member the G3/4 class carrying the name “Madlaina” on its smokebox door. We start at Interlaken Ost, steaming along the Bernese Oberland tracks to Zweilütschinen passing Wilderswil along the way where we see the start of the Schynige Platte Mountain Railway. At Zweilütschinen the locomotive runs round its train for the return trip to Interlaken.

There are so many wonderful places in the world to see. When I visited Austria in 2005, there was terrible flooding and the railway tracks opposite my hotel in Flirsch had been washed away and none of the railways I had intended to visit were operating, so I must return one day.

Hi, thanks for your comment, I have just returned from visiting the Mid Hants Railway and taken a look at your video. The rain has contributed to some really atmospheric shots with plenty of steam. It was good to watch, thanks for posting.
My gosh, you were only there for 6 days? How much did you manage to fit in? Great perspective looking along the side of the boiler, though that regulator valve seems to be leaking a bit.

It was a very busy six days, the crew of the little engine were great fun and did not mind me clamping a little camera onto their engine resulting in an unusual view with some interesting sounds. I think the leaking valve might have been in need of some TLC
Es sind wirklich schöne Aufnahmen, aber von der Ballenberg Dampfbahn BDB (ex. Brünigbahn), hier gezogen von der "Madlaina" der Appenzeller Bahnen (ehemalige Lok 14 der RhB, also eine Schwester von "Heidi"). "Die Montreux Berner Oberland Bahn (MOB) ist aber auch sehr schön."

Es wäre doch schade, wenn jemand diese wundervolle Bahn im falschen Kanton suchen würde. Die Lok "Madlaina" wurde schon vor zwei Jahren von den Appenzellern an "La Traction" weitergegeben und ist nun im Kanton Jura unterwegs. Ich beneide Sie ein wenig, dass Sie das Gastspiel der "Madlaina" bei der Ballenberg Dampfbahn miterleben durften und bedanke mich bei dieser Gelegenheit für Ihre wundervollen Filme.
@@kaykaysson1322 Hallo "Madlaina" ist in einem anderen Kanton, aber es ist klar, dass ihre derzeitigen Tierpfleger sie in gutem Zustand halten. Sie sah wunderbar aus und klang wunderbar. Ich hatte das Glück, den Motor zu sehen, denn sie war nicht der Motor, der ursprünglich zum Ziehen oder Trainieren vorgesehen war. Ich freue mich, dass Sie diese Videos genießen.
Hi "Madlaina" is in a different Canton, but it is clear that her current keepers are keeping her in good condition, she looked and sounded wonderful. I was lucky to see the engine because she was not the engine originally schedualed to haul or train. I am pleased you enjoy watching these videos.

Oh, and that mountain railway is a "cog" railway, I guess? It seems to have a rack down the middle.

Can't believe this video has existed so long and I haven't seen it until now. Exceptional footage, and a very familiar area for me although a long time ago.
The brief guards eye view near the end of the film would have made a nice view for the whole journey.
Lucky to see a steam locomotive there, and there's enough track without rack to get it most of the way down the line.
Great sound and view.

This was a beautiful journey. I must admit that as much as I like the driver's perspective, it's frustrating when we rush by a waterfall or a sudden breakaway and we don't get the opportunity to see what's there. I appreciate your multiple camera approach to this. You don't dwell on what's at the side, but you know what's interesting and you let us see it. And I also enjoy the stills at the end of the videos. Thank you. I'll never get to travel to these places and you present it so beautifully.

Aha! I think I've discovered your secret, Tim! The run-around sequence before the return journey, you had yourself an un-named friend shooting the sequence to get the on-board and from-the-platform views....Well executed! Also, for the shots of the loco you had your telephoto setting at or near full, made it look like you were sitting on the loco's tank....Oooh I bet that would've been a hot seat! LOL Again a fantastic video...CONGRATULATIONS!
beautiful drive and views, but this setting the camera, but with a view of the barrel from the front of the train definitely spoils viewed panorama.

Thank you, I am pleased you enjoyed the ride. The train is owned by a preservation society, I believed it can be hired by groups such as the one I was travelling with at any time of the year.

That looks like a (presumably) former airfield at 6:00, with camouflaged aircraft bunkers. Presumably former because there are people walking dogs and there seem to be cattle on there now.

Hi Andrie, this is what Wikipedia tells us about the airfield ... The Airbase is now closed to scheduled commercial flights. Most recently, in 2007, Interlaken Airbase was used for the sixth round of the Red Bull Air Race.

I was only in Switzerland for 6 days, this is the last day, but I still have two mountain railways and two other trains to catch before I return after dark to my hotel in Bern.
