      I never had the resources to try this ,but get a big Ford or GM chassis place a 1000 hp 6-cyl. 567 diesel in it, it's a two stroke cycle,I think it had a blower instead of a turbo,these motors had an rpm range of 200-800 ,but damn they could pull 2000 tons on steel rails,oh they were locomotive engines and they were tied to a dynamo,but I think in a truck a multi disc clutch would do the job,the 567 is displacement of one cylinder.They were made in-line 6,V-12 ,V-16 and V-20,the latter was 6000 hp @ 800 rpm,but a bit to large at 20 feet long.

    • @rwaitt14153
      @rwaitt14153 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It ain't the lines. It's those crummy plastic caps with the barb ends. If IHC had done it properly out of metal with some o-rings you could just cut the rotten lines off and replace it with fuel line from NAPA and one of those Harbor Freight o-ring kits. But NOOOOOOO. You look at them crosseyed and they break so you got to get the whole kit... again.
      Other than that the IDI is bulletproof. Well, still is if you don't mind oiling the roads everywhere you go.

    • @Mark_Tschetter

  • @briangill6219
    @briangill6219 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    A trick that helps keep the return lines from leaking is to use washers from oil drain plugs between the plastic cap and the injector line. A nice trick that DieselTechRon taught us. It creates a better seal between the cap and injector.

  • @immikeurnot
    @immikeurnot 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Even in Texas summers, they don't want to start if the glow plug system isn't working. Good thing is the glow plug system is really easy to understand and repair. Never seen an IDI glow plug controller on the left side of the engine; on the turbo model, they're always on the right fender, and on the non-turbo engines they're on the back of the motor.
    The IDIT was done less for power and more for killing smoke. There were IIRC at least three tunes of the IDI, depending on the altitude they were destined to run at. Run a sea-level truck in, say, Denver and it'd be nothing but black smoke. Run a high altitude calibration at sea level and it was just as gutless as it would be at home, just with more clatter. With the turbo, the engine never realized it was anywhere but at sea level.
    Oh, and I'm still driving an IDI. Yeah, it's gutless, but it runs, and I don't have to deal with electronics issues that come up on newer trucks.

      @@jaycousland9835 I've been running manual glow plugs for years. 7 seconds is exactly what you should be doing on a 6.9. Some guys go for 10 seconds and end up shortening the life of the glow plugs. If you're planning to keep the truck for a while, oilburners.net is a great forum to learn and share info on these trucks. Oh, and the ATS 088 has been out of production for about 30 years. You can still find used kits sometimes and a small community of shops are starting to build new ones. Mine was used as well and needed work before I could use it. ATS and Banks have long since given up on these engines though. Hypermax is the last big name that still sells kits.

    My father just picked up an 85 f350 with the 6.9idi for $500 with a plow setup. Was running when we got it but later blew 2 rods threw the oil pan. Now he found a 7.3 idi none turbo for $250 with apparently 76000 original miles on it. Your video was perfect timing for us! Keep up the good work!

    Purchased my 1984 idi for $600 drove it 60 miles low on oil changed the oil and put a snowplow on it. It starts well in winter when the block heater has been plugged in. The biggest pain was having to climb under it with a propane torch to heat up the starter so it would turn when it hit -30f. Still runs great.

    Starter solenoid fixes glow plug issue, my 7.3 idi has been the absolute most reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned hands down.. change the oil and change the oil cooler seals lol trust.. other than basic maintenance I haven’t had an issue.. return lines are basic maintenance that should be done every 3-5 years either way.. my 89 7.3 idi has a banks turbo i put on it and everyone said it’ll grenade.. 11 years later n I’m still waiting for it to “grenade”. Plus my truck runs on pretty much anything i dump in the tank.. which happens to be hydraulic oil at the moment.. last week was old olive oil. Have no cavitation issues with 340k miles on it. 5 speed happiness

    I loved the "smoke screen" option in my old '84 6.9. If it was 50 degrees or below, you needed two batteries and half a can of cosby sauce to get it going. The car parked behind would totally disappear into a thick cloud of smoke! If it was exactly 51 degrees or higher, you barely had to bump the key and it started like you just shut it off - no glow plugs, no spray, no smoke!
    The sticker said 150hp from the factory, but on the highway I could not do more than 65mph, and where there was a hill, I had to get a running start otherwise I couldn't make it over the top. *Still got like 17mpg though!!*

    Never had an issue with glow plugs, or cold starts down to 0 F. Your friends IDI in Africa probably Isn't maintained well. Return lines are kind of a pain, but not as bad as other fuel systems. The achilles heel in my opinion is the fuel selector valve, and that they always leak oil. Other than that, they get decent mileage and provide adequate power to most uses, and last a long time. That's why we still see them being used

    I bought an f 250 with a 7.3 idi 5sp a few years back.
    I love the simplicity of these engines for example the ones with manual trans don't even have a pcm, fuel pump is an old school mechanical fuel pump ran by the engine, no annoying in tank fuel pump, compare the cost of injector pumps/ injectors to other more modern diesels and see just how much less it costs to replace these parts.
    one thing you didn't mention is that these engines will run on anything you pour into the fuel tank, I even ran on a gas/diesel mixture once.
    I have friends with other diesels that have had issues that cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars to repair and it makes me happy that my truck wont stop running while they are constantly fixing theirs.
    when you buy one of these trucks you are buying a truck with a tractor engine under the hood, your friends may beat you up the hill every time, but you will arrive at point B every time.
    this is the last generation of diesel you can buy that isn't choked down by catyletic converters, EGR valves, DPF's, SCR and all the other emissions equipment that just adds more expense down the road.

    Starting the engine before the wait to start light goes out will not damage glow plugs. The glow plug systems on these continue to apply voltage after the engine has started. Most likely a damaged or defective glow plug controller will drive the glow plugs beyond their duty cycle and destroy them.

    With a bit of searching you can find commercial continuous duty type glow plugs that fit these and with those the glow plug control circuit can be reduced down to a manual control and they normal count to XX before starting method.
    Beyond that they can also be converted to a intake heater grid or multi glow coil type intake air preheat that works well too.

      AC60G plugs will fit, but the threads are a little too short for them to fully seat. The tips don’t protrude from the prechambers, though, so they’re safe. Cavitation is when a fluid boils due to pressure reduction. It is usually associated with pipe restrictions and bends in liquids that are moving too quickly for the plumbing situation. This has nothing to do with pistons. Now, there might be some cavitation in the engine, but your description of what cavitation is, was off the mark.

    • @nickwhite6717
      @nickwhite6717 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stephendee7839 happens due to combustion pressure slightly deflecting the cylinder wall and then it coming back true. When it comes back to place it creates a slight vaccum on the coolant side and the coolant boils off. Those bubbles then collapsing is what eats away at the block/liner
