I think that the demon is referring to Oliver, William’s Dad, not William himself.
In ‘’Gifts of warning and love” The book said:
“When sickness conquers health, when memories fade, when the fires of death damn us all, only then, will he be set free. Only then will the man lose to the monster in his mind. He stares at me through my reflection, He’s the voice in my head screaming madness, I never meant for this to happen, I just wanted my babies back in my arms again, but my actions have only brought me farther away. Now I’m trapped in my own mind, my body is no longer mine, Waiting endlessly, For the warm flames of death to drag me where I belong and end my line of suffering. Please, I saw everything, and he sees you.”
I went over some of these lines and noticed some other things.
If I’m not wrong, Oliver had his kids, Patricia and William(youngest and oldest respectively), taken away from him. (I just wanted my babies back in my arms again,)
Patricia and William were taken against Oliver’s will.(Please, I saw everything,)
and William lost his memories.(when memories fade,)
Adding on to that, William didn’t know anything about God’s Poison until he read the book. And the demon, knowing that, said “Ask Mr. Afton.”
William remarked that since there was indeed handwriting in the book, It could be possible that someone else wrote it, a person that had freed themself and experienced something similar to what William went through.
Another piece of evidence is that at (3:07-3:09), you can see what looks like a silhouette of Oliver.
Don’t take this too seriously tho, it's just a theory.
