What a god awful version this was to react to. It always drives me crazy when people react to a live version when it their first listen. UGH. Listen to the version that actually made the song famous.
I'm an old guy now, but I saw ZZ Top 3 times starting back in 1973. They kicked my ass everytime! They're from Houstin, Texas! This song is normally preceded by 'Waitin For The Bus'. Check it out. I think you'll dig it!
Ya know that was and is a huge lie. It was bill ham trying to promote these guys. They only said this after he died. The statement was: you guys know what your doing. That's pretty much all Jimi ever said to them. Black people scared Billy. He struggles to this day. Bill ham made it up. Ask frank...get him off to the side and he will tell you they were awkward around Jimi and he ignored them just like he did the Monkees when he was forced into a tour with them. He was pissed the entire time. Trust me Jimi never really heard of them before the deal for the few shows they shared a bill.
One of their concerts was my parents first date. I was lucky enough to see them myself in like 2006. Just effortlessly amazing. RIP Dad you introduced me to so much good music!
Blue Jeans Blues, I Thank You, Waiting For The Bus, Tush are all Kickass songs to take you down the rabbit hole for 'That Little Band From Texas' ZZ Top. A shame their record of a band not changing members ended with Dusty leaving us. R.I.P. Dusty. Thanks for the great reaction! ❤
MrLboyd - You are the man! Also, they are referring to La Grange, Texas, which is a tiny town that had a notorious brothel in the 70s-80s. That's why they have that line "They got a lotta nice girls... you know what I'm talking about..."
A deep cut from ZZ Top is Master of Sparks. ZZ Top aka a little band from Texas that I grew up listening to enjoy your journey in music and I enjoy going with you. Keep up the good work bringing old music back.
First heard ZZ Top back in the 70’s, saw them several times over the years, and always a great show. Last time I saw them was in 2018, with my 36 year old son-in-law, and he absolutely loved them!
"Muddy Waters turns to wine" might be an artistic form of praise Billy Gibbons is giving for his hero Muddy Waters. Billy has done a lot over the years to keep Muddy's legacy alive.
That little ol' Band from Texas. And wow you were almost on the meaning of this song!! i was shocked!! the story goes....In the old days they could only get the Blues in south Texas late at night from an old Mexican radio station across the border, This is where they heard the old Blues tunes.... So when a big Radio station out of Chicago picked up a nightly Blues show, it started getting picked up on some nightly AM stations across the US and finally down into Texas. The Music they so craved was finally making it's way across the nation, and Muddy Waters tunes blew them away! They were hooked! grew up and put a south Texas rock spin on it! Once they all got together they just had to figure out a band name..... That became a cool play on one of their favorite Blues guitarists name.... They couldn't have King in their name...... And they also couldn't have BB in their name.... So they became ZZ Top! As for some good Bluesy ZZ Top.... I would recommend Watching "Brown Sugar" Live from Gruene hall. And also Give Blue Jean Blues a spin! I enjoy your reactions my friend! Thank You!!
"My head's in Mississippi" is swingin' blues, so much fun to play. "Tube Snake Boogie", "Got me Under Pressure", "Just got paid", "Pearl Necklace", "Cheap sunglasses" and "Rough Boy" display more of the facets of ZZ Top.
The reason for all the mud references when you talk about Mississippi is because of the Delta, which stretches across from parts of East Texas to Alabama, is known for its mud. The mud is extremely fertile, especially because of all of the dirt and minerals that come from the headwaters of the Mississippi River (Lake Itasca, Minnesota) through the Midwest and into the Mississippi Delta, which feeds the coastal plains of the South, as well as the Gulf boundaries of Louisiana, and the bayous of southeastern Texas, namely the Houston area. The Mississippi Delta is where the cotton fields and sugar cane was predominantly grown, and unfortunately so was the nexus of the slave trade in the US. Because of the large number of black Americans, blues came from the Mississippi Delta, and ended up traveling up the Mississippi River to Chicago, where it took on another life. Mississippi is the birthplace of the blues, thanks to the black musicians that created music with western instruments and slave spirituals, creating one of the two major music traditions formed in the US (blues and jazz). Mississippi is where the legend of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the Devil to learn how to play came from, but the sheer number of influential black musicians that came from the Delta region, stretching across 4 states, is astonishing. Blind Willie Johnson, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Lightnin' Hopkins, Ledbelly... Just too damn many to keep naming. We were extremely fortunate that Alan Lomax was able to record a lot of the early greats before they were lost to history. "Jesus Just Left Chicago" is one of ZZ Top's tributes to the great influences of blues.
These dudes were awesome live. I saw them 3x in this era, and another 5 or 6 times thru the subsequent years. These dudes were my faves growing up in the 70s, finally got to see them in 1981. Total blues. That all changed in the 80s. Check out "Hot, Blue, and Righteous," or "Have You Heard?" from their Tres Hombres album. It'll send ya to church, my good man.
Saw them at a biker rally just before they did indeed go "Nationwide". They were well known within biker society. I'd first heard bootleg tapes of them, and loved their swampy, bluesy, stank.
You, sir are an interesting individual. I will be listening and watching. I like your rake on ZZTop. Rock on, My Man!!! A 72 year old Rock And Roll fan.
The band is from Texas. From the beginning their music has been based in the Mississippi Delta Blues. I recommend the studio recording of 'Fool for Your Stockings' if you like the way they do electric blues.
ZZ Top is the creators of Texas Rock/Blues. Most of their career, they only toured in the State of Texas. You would enjoy their collection. Always keep in mind, just 3 dudes.
Great to see ZZ-Top and some blues getting a reaction! You gotta check out North Mississippi All-Stars. Their first album (Shake Hands With Shorty, 2000) is an iconic fusion of delta blues and modern technique in production and instrumentation. "The Heavy" is another great funk/blues band that are worth your time. Great reaction!
In this particular reference, the "muddy water" he refers to is the Mississippi River. It is known for being very muddy by the time it makes it down to N'awlins. The muddy water of the Mississippi is a common topic in old blues music, as it passed thru major blues hubs.
Check out ZZ Top "Dust My Broom", "Blue Jean Blues", "Just Got Paid" for some of their more bluesy numbers. You really can't go wrong with most of their music.
Their older stuff was way better than the newer, imo. More bluesy. I like Hot, Blue, and Righteous, Blue Jean Blues, and the entire Tres Hombres album too
Just Got Paid is one of my favourite ZZ tunes.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 PS. The Mississippi River watershed is the biggest watershed in the United States, draining more than three million square kilometers one million square miles of land. The Mississippi River watershed stretches from the Appalachian Mountains in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west.
Muddy Waters is the famous blues player from Mississippi. Billy Gibbons says his record "Electric Mud" was a big influence. It's also a quintessential album because it used electric guitars in blues. Just a step to Rock and Roll. The later 60's Jeffe Beck, Eric Clapton, Jim Page etc. style that lead to tBlack Sabbath and metal.
I'll save you a few bucks...there's nothing in Mississippi but mud....These guys are THE 3piece and you cant think of a beard without ZZ-Top. One of the only touring acts that never lost it their sound was timeless
Known as “Just a little band from Texas” is an Understatement! Singer/Guitarist has 50+ years in the business. To bad the Requester left out - Waiting on a Bus/Jesus Left Chicago. A mistake in editing, lead Waiting into Jesus. Top took a listen and said “Leave It”. It’s the only way to hear this!
I was lucky enough to see them live several times, starting from the mid 70s. I much prefer their early sound, which was very blues oriented. Fandango is a great album to try
Mud references re:Mississippi…there’s a lot of water in Mississippi, a humid subtropical climate, and a lot of lowland, so you naturally get lots of mud.
Known as that Little ol' Band from Texas. The lyrics "muddy waters turned to wine" just refers to the fact that Jesus did it at the wedding in the bible. They are definitely the epitome of Texas Blues. La Grange, Mexican Blackbird, and even Doubleback used in Back to the Future III off of the Recycler album shows that.
And Mr. Morganfield lived the last 4 decades of his life in the Chicago area. This included most of his professional musical work. So there is reason to think that.
The reason why mud is associated with Mississippi is mainly because of two reasons. 1) The Mississippi River constantly swells and recedes; therefore the river tends to be very muddy. 2) Mississippi is one of the states that constantly floods multiple times every year; thus it is usually very muddy.
the river is muddy most of the time. never been there huh? it's a huge long river and the further south you go the more sediment is in it. there are parts of it that are near black too from the tannin in the willow roots.
They are From Texas, ,. Muddy Mississippi, muddy water is slang for the river not the state, and ZZ is for the zig zag rolling papers and top rolling papers ,
The song is cool but the notes are very light. His approach to the pentatonic scale is basic. He could do so much more but they were entering a world they knew nothing of. Tgey call these cheat notes. Like piwer bar chords in the 70s and 80s. A easy guide to sound like a style of music ya dont understand. SRV and Jimmy vaughn were playing it the eay it was introduced. No cheat chords
a lot of these guys radio played songs don't come close to showing their talent. . silly side note, they were always known for their beards and their drummer, clean shaven by comparison makes up for his heathenness, rofl, lack of facial hair with his last name, Frank Lee Beard
Just stick to their 70s stuff. Eliminator, Regurgitator, etc from the 80s and beyond are just a parody of their former selves. After Deguello, it has been no bueno.
ZZ Top always amazes how full a 3 man band can sound!
I just saw them at Foxwoods Casino last month. Still Amazing. Elwood fits right in.
i saw em in 75. they were great!
At ZZ Topp concerts, Billy Gibbons would announce 1) No drinking through the Gospel songs, and 2) there would be NO Gospel songs.😂 😂
Never play this without “waitin’ on the bus” played first! They are two for one songs. Spliced together when recorded.
Yes!! Just not the same without "Waitin for the bus" starting it off.
It was a production error... and one of the greatest errors in Rock history.
Never react to this version period unless you have already reacted to the original studio version
Jimi Hendrix said Billy Gibbons was his favorite guitar player.
Ya know that was and is a huge lie. It was bill ham trying to promote these guys. They only said this after he died. The statement was: you guys know what your doing. That's pretty much all Jimi ever said to them. Black people scared Billy. He struggles to this day. Bill ham made it up. "Cheap Sunglasses" is a classic.
More ZZ Top. Fantastic band like no other.
MrLboyd - You are the man! Also, they are referring to La Grange, Texas, which is a tiny town that had a notorious brothel in the 70s-80s. That's why they have that line "They got a lotta nice girls... you know what I'm talking about..."
I love ZZ top! RIP Dusty Hill ❤
Love my hometown boys, they came from my area in Houston, playing around the area becoming ZZ Top, Try Blue Jean Blues. Enjoy
"Is it just muddy in Mississippi?" Hahaha. I love that. 💧
A deep cut from ZZ Top is Master of Sparks. ZZ Top aka a little band from Texas that I grew up listening to enjoy your journey in music and I enjoy going with you. Keep up the good work bringing old music back.
Texas Blues at it's finest! Please continue down this rabbit hole!! R.I.P. Dusty Hill.
I’m not being patronizing here but you just shouldn’t be surprised ever that a ZZ Top song is incredible. They’re pure rock and pure cool. RIP DUSTY
First heard ZZ Top back in the 70’s, saw them several times over the years, and always a great show. Last time I saw them was in 2018, with my 36 year old son-in-law, and he absolutely loved them!
Best $20 I ever spent was seeing zz top live.
Muddy Waters is an amazing blues musician known from Chicago down through The Delta !!
"Muddy Waters turns to wine" might be an artistic form of praise Billy Gibbons is giving for his hero Muddy Waters. Billy has done a lot over the years to keep Muddy's legacy alive.
Great band! So many songs to explore.
When a band can create a a diversity of sounds within their own style says much. They rock. Seen them twice in concert. Late 70's and then later 2000s
That little ol' Band from Texas. And wow you were almost on the meaning of this song!! i was shocked!! the story goes....In the old days they could only get the Blues in south Texas late at night from an old Mexican radio station across the border, This is where they heard the old Blues tunes.... The best blues band that became a rock band ever. Listen to La Grange. It was my high school years
"My head's in Mississippi" is swingin' blues, so much fun to play. "Tube Snake Boogie", "Got me Under Pressure", "Just got paid", "Pearl Necklace", "Cheap sunglasses" and "Rough Boy" display more of the facets of ZZ Top.

Love your smiling grin you had about three minutes in
rest in power dusty.
Missippi River is incredibly muddy and yes it dumps a lot of it on the shoreline (especially during floods).
Just Got Paid - it's required listening
Saw them at a biker rally just before they did indeed go "Nationwide". They were well known within biker society. I'd first heard bootleg tapes of them, and loved their swampy, bluesy, stank.
You, sir are an interesting individual. I will be listening and watching. I like your rake on ZZTop. Rock on, My Man!!! A 72 year old Rock And Roll fan.
RIP Dusty Hill.
And definitely check out the album version of this song and the one that leads into it. Best 3 piece ever. At least the tightest.
You should check out Just Got Paid and I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide, also from this 1980 live performance. Absolute bangers.
Agree 💯👍
The band is from Texas. From the beginning their music has been based in the Mississippi Delta Blues. I recommend the studio recording of 'Fool for Your Stockings' if you like the way they do electric blues.
It's pretty wild that those two members of ZZ Top have those crazy beards and the drummer's name is actually Frank Beard.
Little old band from Texas baby!
I'm 64 ,I'm Luving this song YesYea8
ZZ Top is the creators of Texas Rock/Blues. Most of their career, they only toured in the State of Texas. You would enjoy their collection. Always keep in mind, just 3 dudes.
Blue jean blues in one of the best
This song is about Jesus...and no one else. Every knee shall bow.
Blue Jean Blues is in my opinion their best song
Great to see ZZ-Top and some blues getting a reaction! You gotta check out North Mississippi All-Stars. Their first album (Shake Hands With Shorty, 2000) is an iconic fusion of delta blues and modern technique in production and instrumentation. "The Heavy" is another great funk/blues band that are worth your time. Great reaction!
Texas boys of course
Not being cocky… just proud
Love it
In this particular reference, the "muddy water" he refers to is the Mississippi River. It is known for being very muddy by the time it makes it down to N'awlins. The muddy water of the Mississippi is a common topic in old blues music, as it passed thru major blues hubs.
The drummer is named Frank Beard, and he’s the only one without a beard lol
Muddy Waters, was also a famous blue's musician, who was described as the father of " the chicago blues." (Water's was also born in Mississippi.)
Check out ZZ Top "Dust My Broom", "Blue Jean Blues", "Just Got Paid" for some of their more bluesy numbers. You really can't go wrong with most of their music.
Their older stuff was way better than the newer, imo. More bluesy. I like Hot, Blue, and Righteous, Blue Jean Blues, and the entire Tres Hombres album too
The land along the Mississippi is low and used to be flooded a lot until levees were built. And the river is muddy anyway.
Just Got Paid is one of my favourite ZZ tunes.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
PS. The Mississippi River watershed is the biggest watershed in the United States, draining more than three million square kilometers one million square miles of land. The Mississippi River watershed stretches from the Appalachian Mountains in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west.
Seen them twice in the 90's, kicked ass both times, Mexican Blackbird and Blue Jean Blues are very good also
This is a teensy tip of a very excellent ice berg that is ZZ Top.
I saw that tour in 1980
Muddy Waters is the famous blues player from Mississippi.
They are referring to the artist "Muddy Waters" you may want to check out his music. Isuggest " I'm your Hoochie Coohie man" .
The studio version of this is PARTICULARLY excellent.
There first three albums were as they say nowadays BANGERS! 🎉
I'll save you a few bucks...there's nothing in Mississippi but mud....These guys are THE 3piece and you cant think of a beard without ZZ-Top. One of the only touring acts that never lost it their sound was timeless

It’s the only way to hear this!
Mississippi mud pie! 😋
I’m bad I’m nation wide is a more upbeat Texas blues. Early ZZ Top is awesome, Im sure some one mentioned the 3 beards thing already.
I was lucky enough to see them live several times, starting from the mid 70s. I much prefer their early sound, which was very blues oriented. Fandango is a great album to try
Legs. She knows what she's got and how to use them.
Mud references re:Mississippi…there’s a lot of water in Mississippi, a humid subtropical climate, and a lot of lowland, so you naturally get lots of mud.
ZZ Top is from Texas Brother!
Smoking gutair luv your voice,Yeah I know what you talking about !!!I get it!!It!!!
TY for your music
I always thought the muddy water reference was a tip of the hat to the old blues musician Muddy Waters.
And Mr. Morganfield lived the last 4 decades of his life in the Chicago area. This included most of his professional musical work. So there is reason to think that.
Blue Jean Blues
Rough Boy
Fool For Your Stockings
Need to listen to Mexican Blackbird maybe most underrated Top song ever
Try some of Gary Moore's blues stuff. You will not be disappointed.
The Mississippi river is very muddy.
Muddy Waters is a Famous blues guitarist.
Many Artists have said they studied his style..
Check out Muddy Waters....
Can't go wrong with Legs, Gimme all your lovin or Sleeping bag
It's not MIssissippi the state so much as Mississippi the river that's referred to as muddy. Great band, great song, great reaction.
Mississippi mud is different. I honestly can’t say why but I worked over there for a minute and live in Louisiana. Different mud. It’s weird.
Try Blue Jean Blues
Muddy Waters is their hero.
The reason why mud is associated with Mississippi is mainly because of two reasons. 1) The Mississippi River constantly swells and recedes; therefore the river tends to be very muddy. 2) Mississippi is one of the states that constantly floods multiple times every year; thus it is usually very muddy.
The Mississipi river its self is pretty muddy.
The big muddy = the Mississippi river.
3 guys
And of course Jesus turned the water into wine !
the river is muddy most of the time. never been there huh? it's a huge long river and the further south you go the more sediment is in it. there are parts of it that are near black too from the tannin in the willow roots.
Done any Stevie Ray Vaughn yet?
They are From Texas, ,. Muddy Mississippi, muddy water is slang for the river not the state, and ZZ is for the zig zag rolling papers and top rolling papers ,
And also a tribute to Texas Bluesman ZZ Hill.
I think they are referencing Muddy Waters the blues singer.
Pearl Necklace,
Heaven, Hell or Houston,
10 foot pole.
ZZ Top is from Texas.
Muddy Waters in to Wine. Muddy Waters the Blues Man, not Mississippi water. Think about it that way
Don't sound right without "waiting for the bus"....
Not 1980, album was 1973.
wtf u got rain over the vid bro?????? not a good experience
Stick with earlier ZZ, late 80’s ZZ is not the greatest representation of their talent.
a lot of these guys radio played songs don't come close to showing their talent. . silly side note, they were always known for their beards and their drummer, clean shaven by comparison makes up for his heathenness, rofl, lack of facial hair with his last name, Frank Lee Beard
The muddy waters of the Ole Mississippi River that runs through the state of Mississippi is the reason for the reference of mud.
Just stick to their 70s stuff. Eliminator, Regurgitator, etc from the 80s and beyond are just a parody of their former selves. After Deguello, it has been no bueno.
