How Cape Town is fighting back on extortion

Where we have set the highest record ever for infrastructure investment, our City is facing an enormous threat by extortionists who threaten our building contractors on these sites.
They demand large sums of money as "protection fees," while intimidating the contractor teams with threats of violence.
Same as service delivery contractos, operating in our townships. Often protests will be held because of "lack of services," but in reality these service providers cannot enter an area, because of these intimidation threats.
To ensure service delivery must continue, and with our SAPS not having the resources to assist, we ourselves stepped in. But at a huge cost.
I visited 2 of the Law Enforcement escort teams in Khayelitsha recently, to see for myself. And the reality is horrifying.
I am encouraged by the success we have achieved, at making sure criminals are prevented as far as possible, in trying to curb our service delivery.
With a rapidly receding national police service, organised syndicates are turning our country into a mafia state, but in our municipality we are fighting back.
So many various sectors are being targetted, from business districts, the eHailing and public transport sector, the construction sector, and that of our service delivery contractors.
Last year we launched our Enough is Enough campaign, with a tollfree number that allowed incidents to be reported to. We are offering rewards up to R250 000 for information of those involved and already we have registered hundreds of complaints and incidents. Our investigators are hard at work, building cases and linking the various syndicates to the crimes of extortion.
If you have been extorted, if you have been threatened or have had payment of 'protection monies' demanded, please contact us. You can remain annonymous if you prefer, 0800 00 6992.
Cape Town works. And we won't cower at the feet of criminals.

These are informal settlements with a lot of illegal immigrants if you want a house you need an income you can't suddenly house every body that's ridiculous where do you think the DA is going to get the money to this when the DA gets more power we will stop the influx of undocumented people coming over our borders

Hi JP, I remember some time back you were on about stance cars and the likes thereof. I am a staff driver. My question is when will you look into staff and charter services being extorted by CATA and CODETA especially in the locations?? We are extorted at between R1500 and R2500 for transporting staff home safely else your vehicle gets "impounded" by these thugs. They do not have any mercy whatsoever. Point is they are not at liberty to demand money for driving in any area around Cape Town. Please look into it. This week alone i know of 4 vans that were extorted alone. There are many many others.

@@JP4Safety I am not looking for a report on what we continue to live every day. I am asking when will you deploy vehicles and man power to areas such as Delft, Khayalitsha, Mfuleni and other areas where staff transport are taxed daily...
