And, also, the Enfield wasn't perfect. Most British soldiers would load in 5 rounds, fire off one or two shots, and then put another clip in. Having 10 in would cause occasional jams and malfunctions.
Actually, to clarify too, don't get me wrong, the Enfield was great, but it still had its faults.
It wasn't perfect but it was the best available.
TaZ101SAGA "best" the sight would adjust itself after a day of shooting. my friend has one, and i have a gewehr k98 the original type, not the hitler K98 k version. So far he adjust his sight every day, and i haven't had to do it once.

it is far from the worst rilfe of World war one. Heck it is even a good Second world war rifle. Yet the sight is literally everything when getting accuracy a reliant thing. the lee enfield is certainly not the very best rifle. Each one has it's own ups and downs. Only thing the lee really has is the mag size. my mauser bolts faster than that slugish Karbiner gewehr 1898 Az. Pretty much just as good as the lee. Honestly the steyr rifle, carcanno, springfield, and mossin nanget are also REALLY good guns. By the first world war, you can say the bolt action is pretty much perfected as a technology.

The Karabiner 98k is a different weapon to the
Gewehr 98. The Wehrmacht used the G98 until 1935
but basically every german soldier used the k98, which is basically the smae thing, but shorter. so are they talking about the ww1 (g98) variant versus the ww2(k98k)?

This is a totally Anglo centric doco. This guy bugs me. I have owned and shot both, beside the magazine differences both equally lovely pieces to own and fire. This is how myths begin, like the superiority of the Katana to European swords, but that's another rant. So don't listen children the K98 will fuck you up just as much as the Enfield! This is just propaganda, If the Lee Enfield action is so good then why are most bolt action sporting rifles Mauser based? Do your own research don't just follow this guy. Oh and that rapid fire dub step bit when he was shooting the Enfield? Please…..
Andy at the end was taking his time with the Mauser because the director told him to.
You even find quite a few hunters today using converted K98. They would have a scope mounted and the stock replaced with something nicer than the military standard, but otherwise unchanged.

loading more clips means more time as well. they should test with empty chambers load rounds and then fire.

Daniel Eyre the German mauser was pretty good for standing up to mud, and dirt. i hardly have to clean mine. probably should honestly o.o even the mossin nanget is better that the lee enfield for amount of time before cleaning.. then again most Russian things like to get dirty, and not need a bath for some time. LOL! if the lee enfield was more covered up, like an expanded internal magazine would help it. of coarse it would be integrated into the stock, like the mauser. Making it better against the muddy ground. not a huge difference, but it could go a long way.
either way the lee, and Mauser rifles were pretty damn good for the time. I'd love either one if i had to be equipped with one or the other gun for battle.
MonarchTherapsids Inostran I have to disagree, the Enfield is just as reliable as a mosin, or mauser. the catch is like you said the mag can get fouled up, and the mosin/mauser have a "safer" design with the locking lugs at the front of the bolt, vs the enfiled at the rear. its actually kinda a spooky thing to see XD.
Due to its relatively short throw, the trick with the enfield is to keep your thumb and index finger on the bolt and use your 4th finger to fire the gun as it takes extra time to move your index finger between the trigger and bolt in between each shot and re-chamber. Thats most likely how the rifle instructor managed to fire so many rounds.

to be fair the Springfield only served in large numbers briefly and as spare rifles sold by America before they joined, the French Lebel should be in the video though, and original Mosin Nagant M1891 rifles in working condition are a bit hard to find I'd believe, unlike the 91/30

@@MaxwellBenson80= It is an outstanding system! Majority of all combat and hunting rifles are based on the Mauser action. The British Pattern 1913 and 1914 are Mauser based system rifles. The American M1917 in 30-06 is modified from the British 1913/14s. The Springfield M1903 is a Mauser copy. Countries in Europe like Sweden, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Romania, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, etc. adopted Mausers. Majority of all Central and South America. China was a big user of Mauser rifles. Japan in their Arisaka rifle is a modified Mauser action. Buy one. You will find it fun to shoot. I have 5 Mausers.

@@MaxwellBenson80= Outstanding Phil! This is a fantastic rifle. This rifle has seen the worst and the best use. The worst use was in the Japanese invasion of the Philippines. The entire Philippine National Army was armed with surplus M1917s. The Japanese infantry got decimated in the jungles because of it's superior rear peep sight for close range and medium range combat. The bad part was the Japanese brought more artillery to stop the devastating fire from American and Filipino infantry. Both forces had to retreat and leave behind majority of their ammo and stock piles of food and were forced to surrender. Its good use was in the India, China, and Burma campaign. Gen. Stilwell was the epitome of the infantryman. He led Chinese and Burmese troops to route and flank the Japanese and trap them in the jungle. These are good examples of how the M1917 was used in combat during WWII and highly forgotten in history. Another is the Free French Forces that fought in Italy and finally to liberate their homeland along with their North African colonial troops.

Dan I have nothing but respect for you, And being pretty much british meself I can understand the enthusiasm. But the Lee-Enfield, while a wonderful weapon, Did have faults of it's own. I have both and shot both. I love the both of them, but if I was in the trenches. I'd rather have the Mauser G98 rather then the SMLE. While the SMLE had double the magazine capacity and a shorter pull bolt. The thing was not as 'trench friendly', Plus with the rear locking lugs I get a little nervous as the lock up isn't as reassuring as the Mauser's. But most of all, you're more likely to hit what you're aiming at with a G98 rather then the SMLE No.3 Mk.1. And yes it only has a 5 round magazine, But reloading is so fast, that the firing rate difference is not as wide as people think they are. The bolt on a G98 is very smooth, Never does it snag on me.
I reiterate both are fine rifles and were I equipped with either of them back in the trenches, I wouldn't complain in the least. But there is no clear superiority in either of these as you're trying to suggest. By the way Dan, Dubstep was not a good choice for music in these videos.
What do you mean by trench friendly? The Lee Enfield was shorter, had a larger magazine, and a short pull bolt; all of which are beneficial to fighting in trenches. Reload speed won't matter if your Gewehr is empty and his Enfield still has 5 rounds left, no chance you can reload faster than he could cycle the bolt.
Though I agree, for long range combat I'd go with the Gewehr over the Enfield.

I don't know what you mean by "trench friendly" either. In terms of reliability in the trenches -- i.e. susceptibility to mud and dirt, every report I've ever read rates the SMLE as one of, if not _the_ best rifle of the war in that regard. And if you mean combat _in_ the trenches, after you've jumped down into an enemy trench, or he's jumped down into yours... I'd take the shorter, handier SMLE over the G98 any day. It would be much more maneuverable in the confines of the trenches.
I own an SMLE, a Mauser 98 (though it's the Brazilian contract version, not German army Gewehr 98), and an M1917 Enfield (which was basically the British P14 rechambered for .30-06). Of all of them, I'd take the SMLE as a combat rifle every time -- and I'm not British. I doubt the average, rack grade SMLE was any less accurate than the average, rack grade G98, and even if it was, I very much doubt the average solder would have been enough of a marksman to exploit the difference, so I dispute the assertion that you are more likely to hit the target with the Mauser. I also have to say your fears of for the strength of the action are _totally_ groundless. _All_ the military rifles of that era were built at least twice as strong as they needed to be to handle the chamber pressure of the cartridges they fired, and some (e.g. the Japanese Arisaka) were roughly ten times as strong. The Lee-Enfield, in its various versions, served the British armed forces from 1895 to 1957. If there had been any problems with the strength of the action and its rear locking lugs, I think they would have discovered it in those 62 years of use.
Interesting to see that some Great War propaganda is still being repeated today as "fact" - thirty eight aimed shots shots in a minute with a Lee Enfield No 1 MkIII is utter nonsense. There is simply not enough time for thirty seven manipulations of the bolt, reloading the magazine (six five round chargers in total) and aiming.
You've obviously never seen it done. It's insane how fast people can work a bolt and trigger. Just youtube it, I've seen someone on here pull of 34 or 35. I don't remember the number. Not quite 38 but pretty damn close.

You are right, I've never seen it done as it's impossible. If you think it is kindly point me to some credible footage of anyone shooting 38 full power 303 rounds out of a Lee Enfield No 1 MK3 in a minute and hitting a 12" target every time at 300 yards. That's the mythical feat of "Instructor Sergeant Alfred Snoxall", a man who never existed, at least in historical records.
If he had been left handed it would have been possible. You would never have to take your right hand off the bolt.

No, it would not be possible. In fact it's even slower for a left handed shooter as they have to reach awkwardly over the top of the rifle. Regardless of technique there is simply not enough time in a minute to do thirty seven manipulations of the bolt, reloading the magazine (six five round chargers in total) and aiming. Folks seem to get hung up on how fast the bolt can be worked and the trigger pulled, that is only part of the equation, reloading the magazine takes time, and most importantly it takes time to aim the rifle with quite a bit of precision to hit a twelve inch target at 300 yards.

This is honestly so distasteful and wrong that I don't even want to watch any further. The notion that the Mauser Gewehr 98 was descended from "hunting rifles" is entirely false and adding dubstep to it only makes it worse. If this is what the BBC thinks about WWI then Brittan is beyond saving.
it was designed for military use but it feels like a hunting rifle in the way it is set up so it is easy to make the mistake.

Jakob Unsworth well they won the war...... don't really know what to tell you apart from the fact that the smle 3 is one of the best bolt action rifles from WW1 par maybe the Russian 1895 but that was lever action.
Perhaps an unpopular opinion but I always preferred the Lebel Model 1886 rifle.

The important point about the different bolt actions is that with the "offset" SMLE bolt handle & shorter action, you can hold your aim while cocking, whereas with the Mauser, you have to move your head out of the way of the longer pullback & more upright bolt knob & so lose your general aim. This design element contributed greatly to the difference in rate of fire between the weapons. Dan kept dropping the Lee Enfield from his shoulder unnecessarily when cocking, whereas Andy got closer to the correct rapid firing technique.
I remember doing rifle drill as a Cadet with the Lee enfield 303. Good times :)

It is known that the Americans made a accuracy rifle (Springfield M1903), the Germans a hunting rifle (Mauser Gew98), but the British made a *battle rifle* (Lee-Enfield rifles).

Good point, also after that initial 10 rounds in any engagement the Lee Enfield essentially drops to the same rate of fire because you reloaded with 5 rounds not a full 10. Taking an extra 20 seconds to reload another 5 rounds could easily mean ded.

And I'm telling you, they do not load as fast or smoothly every time like they do battlefield. So apart from your limited experience as a cadet, I'm telling you from extensive experience of regularly shooting and owning the rifle I'm going to disagree with your 'drivel' and stick with my original assessment.

They fail to mention that the Mauser is still used by modern militaries today, whereas the Enfield is used by third world countries and guerrillas. Besides, the Enfield owes some of its features to the Mauser.

Today bolt action rifles are used only for their accuracy, since semi-automatics are so common and larger magazines are certainly available today. The mauser action is still used today as the Reminton 700 action is derived from it.

The Lee rifle is way older than the Mauser, by decades. You can recognize it in the 1870's the mauser products of the time was wastly different from the 90's models. Even the Mausers up to 1893 worked on cock on closing prinicple rather than the 98's cock on opening.
To claim the Lee Enfield was influenced by the mauser is simply not true, granted it got the idea of chargeloadeing from the meusers of the boer war, but the system dont share any parts or principles. The .303 being a rimmed case made sure of that.
Modern bolt action rifles like the Mauser M03,Acuracy International, Sako TRG, the S&L M97,The Sauer 200/202, The Blaser R93 and R8 dont use the mauser action, I dont think any rifle designed after 1990 do, They all lock in the barrel as oposed to the mauser locking in the reciever. And thats a huge difference.
The Mauser is not used today while the Lee Enfield is used by Canada and some 3rd world countries because of Britain's massive empire

actually the enfield action is just a copy of the Mauser G93 bold action. it's weaker and lacks some safety features. at least that's what I heard and read. also the "expert" in the comparison (that was biased anyway, should be 1 minute, 30sec is rigged so that the enfield doesn't need to reload) took the munition stripe out of the 98 instead of closing the bold with the stripe still inserted. it's designed that way and makes for quicker reloading. the enfield can't do that because it needs two stripes.
yeah but often british soldiers would put only 1 stripper in at a clip at a time and if they need an especially quick reload they would only put one in you dont need to fully load a rifle

The Lee-Enfield action wasn't copied from Mauser 93, although both do cock on closing. The Mauser's have locking lugs at the front of the bolt, while the Enfield's are at the rear. Over time the rear lugs can lead to some head spacing issues, so the Enfield's also have detachable bolt heads, while the Mauser's do not. It also bears mentioning that the basic Enfield action was already in service prior to the M93.
While this demonstration is definitely skewed in favor of the British, the Enfield's smooth action and superior rate of fire compared to that of the Mauser 98 are well documented. The Mauser does however outclass the Enfield in strength and potential accuracy, which is why nearly all modern hunting rifles are based on the Mauser.

Don't you mean the Pattern 14 & 17 Enfield rifles?They were copies of the Mauser action that the British put into production with the intention of replacing the Lee Enfield, just before WW1, but WW1 got in the way & the British decided to keep the Enfield anyway.

I have a Mauser from 1917 but it was refurnished in the 30s, it still shoots straight, (luckily)

It is not designed to represent the situation in the trenches. It is designed to keep kids watching. A majority of small kids would get bored with the bolt action rifle just firing and nothing else happening. Therefore, they put in some interesting editing while syncing it up to dubstep. As they continue watching, they will take in some of the info. All the dubstep was meant to do was keep kids (the target audience) from clicking away out of boredom. I would agree though that, it was a very lazy way of keeping these people engaged.

Didn't know that the British were still making war propaganda about a war that began 100 years ago. Shoot-out between the two rifles was clearly weighted to give the Enfield an advantage. I personally prefer working with the Mauser action, although both are superb and very much equal weapons.

Mauser bolt, cock on close, great sights, and an American round. I thoroughly love the lee enfields ( I have 3 variants) but the 1917 is an excellent rifle.

Every Person who knows a little bit about guns should know that the Gewehr 98 was the best rifle in that time.

I can make something better and without that dumb dubstep also the Mauser was always a military rifle the first model adopted by Germany was the g71 and it was a single shot weapon but after the Russo- ottoman war where the the ottomans used Winchester yellow-boys or model 1868s and peabody martinis which destroyed the Russians who where using burdan riffles wich was a single shot weapon so seeing how single shot weapons where obsolete Germany went to the 71/80 where it had a tube magazine of 6 rounds but in 1886 France invents smokeless powder and adopt the labell and Germany panic so they created a commission rifle called the g 88 where it loads from an enblock magazine like the mannlichers but unlike the mannlicher where you can only load one way you can load both ways but Mauser is angry by this and created other rifles however the model 1895 is important it's striper clip feed smokeless powder and that gets reworked into the g98 with the roller coaster sites so it wasn't a hunting rifle however the action was used for hunting rifles and Mauser did make sporting arms

The Lee Enfield was the worlds most effective rifle? They didn't tell you anything about rim-locking, did they? If this situation occurred your better rate of fire was gone and if you were in a firefight you were pretty much just dead, if you didn't have good cover. In my opinion the M95 was a way better rifle.

Both good rifles. For brush hunting, I use my Enfield, for hunting over open terrain Mauser all day. However, this show is highly biased for British gear but who cares. You know what rifle kicks both their buts? My Mosin Nagant 91/30. Minute of angle, smooth action, easy to work on, ammo is cheap, durable as hell. Love it.

I have a Mosin. I have a yugo Mauser (same action as the M98, of course) and I've shot a 1905 Lee Enfield extensively. The Mosin is the worse of them. Easily. Forever. Even for being a simple club of a rifle it isn't very good (two piece bolt lol), and the action feels like dragging a piece of steel over asphalt. Easy to work? Yes. Comfortable or pleasant? no. There are far better Milsurp bolt actions people can get for not much more money. Guess it's cus its a memegun. Don't get me wrong, I like the Mosin, but acting like it's anything more than a mass-produced brick developed for the sole purpose of getting as many rifles for the cost into the hands of peasant conscripts is kind of dumb.
It's saving grace is that it's cheap, it's ammo is cheap, and hex bayonets are the shit.
"Used by the SS" the Gewer 98 (albeit a shortened version) was still the standard issue weapon of the werhmacht, and (correct me if I'm wrong) might still be their dress rifle. Due to technological advancement, weapons like the G43, and Stg-44 became more common, but never fully replaced the K98
Actually, during WWII, the Mauser Karabiner 98 was the standard infantry rifle, which was a lighter and shorter than the Mauser Gewher 98, but it was still a masterpiece.
Still, the Gewher 98 was the best at its time, it was surely more accurate and powerful than the Lee Enfield, and this documentary is a very very biased piece of BBC scum.
