Shrieve is one of rock music's most versatile and underrated drummers. His ability to compose, especially on Caravanserai, was also outstanding.

One of the greatest and most unheralded rock drummers of all time.... Complete musician and one of the most pleasant, modest and genuine people I had the opportunity to meet and interview.... Nothing more precision-like than an early Santana live performance and Shrieve was always at the center of it...He also turned on Carlos to Miles Davis, John Coltrane and other supremely sophisticated musicians....

Saw Michael Shrieve at both Tanglewood and Fillmore East. Santana was mind blowing in every sense. Shrieve was beyond human during those shows. Interesting how he acknowledges the use,
and I think it was Mescaline, since watching him at Woodstock it was obvious that the outer space music was what many during that time were using. As a Fillmore resident, 100 plus shows,
it was common knowledge that the late shows, 11:30, were made for those who tripped and in fact the peak time of the performance and main group coincided with the psychedelic substances.
It all came tumbling down when the hard drugs came in, soon after, and congrats to Mr. Shrieve for surviving and still thriving. I place him, humbly, as one of the top sixties musicians of its time.

@Julie Marino Tanglewood, that year, had some amazing artists- Jetro Tull was equally awesome. The locals weren't too fond of having massive amounts of kids seeing rock concerts at their cherished venue so sadly it came to tumbling down. Sixties was a tragic time with Vietnam horrific war, lost many friends, but the music was extraordinary. Congrats to both for seeing Santana at there best!

Without question, Santana's Woodstock performance of the song Soul Sacrifice is one of the greatest live performances of a song ever at any time in rock history. It was shockingly fantastic & transcendent! They were an unknown band at the time playing b4 a half million people, and they brought the house down...they pretty much stole the show!

Another worldly moment in time where all the stars lined up. When my son was 17 years old I had him watch Michael's solo from Woodstock. He immediately signed up for drumming classes and shortly thereafter got schizophrenia. Drumming saved his life! Even to this day (48 yrs old) he still drums in a band and was a full time kj for 6 years. Now he has MS and drumming still is the savior. Some day I would love to meet Michael and thank him personally.

It still puts a lump in my throat every time I see the Soul Sacrifice Woodstock performance. It's like the adrenaline surge gradually increases as the song goes on. It's not just the amazing drum solo, it's the amazing drum solo to an amazing song! It's funny, I just assumed he was with Santana his entire career. Just another one of those great musical artists that kind of slipped through the cracks later on, somehow. There is also footage from a live 1971 show featuring Soul Sacrifice, which is every bit as good as the Woodstock performance. Check it out!

Santana and the Beatles got me to playing drums early i was born in 1949 also and i was going to Woodstock and all my friends backed out on me so instead i hitchedhiked out west with only a quarter in my pocket and was gone a year but later i did meet Carlos and shook hands with him and got his and most of the bands autograph's on one of his concert programs. I'm a chicano from New Mexico but grew up in the south but never lost my roots also my aunt says when she was young and dating my uncle they used to go to bars in Albuquerque and see Carlos playing, he would sneak over the border to go make money playing in the bars at 16 and then go back to Mexico.

Man 1969, a year that stood on its own. It was the right time , right space, right location and the right people and bands that placed their stamp on a generation. It was a coming together of many different forces that together did the unthinkable and for three days showed the world that they might just know what they are fighting for and that it could just possibly work.
Three days of love and peace lots of rain and an all you can eat buffet of some of the best bands and music the world has ever seen. The groups were the best of the best. There was Hendrix , The Who, Alvin Lee and so many more. There were no bad performances during the festival. There were good performances as well as truely great performances. However the Woodstock festival also treated the world to some bands that rose above all others. There performances were the things that memories are made of. These select few bands had the jam of their lives and carriers. They played a set that left the audience and world in awe. A moment when time stopped and the band and the music burned an image and memory of they way they played that is forever stamped into the cosmic space time continuum.
For a band that got the invite to perform really through a stroke of luck, for a band that had no national exposure, had no album, had never done anything close to this scale, a band who's guitarist was an unknown, a drummer that had only 4 drums and band members that played instrument's not normally associated with a rock band and a band with a rocking latin twist, they were just there to play fill a spot on the first day while everyone waited for the big boys.
This band of brothers did not just play on that fateful day, instead they put on the show of their lives, and according to the vast majority of people who were there and those that saw the movie will swear to this day that Santana had the festivals best performance and the last number played soul sacrifice was by far the single best performance that came out if the festival.
While every one now knows who Santana is what he can musically create and how he can make a guitar sing, it was the band and the drummer in particular that felt an image that will never be forgotten.
They were truely a band of brothers jamming together and having fun. No one member was greater than the other and together they created a very special moment. Weather your thing was Santana's guitar playing, the base conga or the organ solos, or maybe it was the iconic drum solo that set a standard by probably the most under rated and overlooked drummer in all of rock, Santana on that day set a standard that only a few ever duplicated.
While I was not there on that fateful day in that summer of such a special year, I have seen Santana twice and all I can say is WOW. Thank you guys it will never be forgotten

For a moment in time those guys on that stage, playing Soul Sacrifice were engulfed by the power and magnitude of the music that was pouring from their souls. They were high on drugs and intoxicated by the sheer explosion of the moment which would catapult them into a raging culmination of the 1960's.

I've always felt rather sorry for Michael Shrieve.
Imagine.........you're about nineteen years old, playing with a band that are absolutely on fire, you're tripping and you play to half a million people who are absolutely knocked out by the wonder of your performance.
Where do you go from there?
You have a whole lifetime in front of you - what is ever going to top that?

Michael, my name is Mike. My Girlfriend was once at a Santana concert backstage, where one of the bandmember gave her a vynal LP. It was 1974 in San Diego California. The LP is a Reference Recording by Columbia Records and CBS. it has 3 songs on the A side and 2 on the B. It is in a white original sleeve. One of the songs on the B side is Illumination. It not a public release album. Santana was touring with Chicago at the time, she still has the backstage pass. can you give us some background on this LP, if not point us in the rignt direction? Thank you for your time.

That record was publicly released as Devadip Carlos Santana and Alice Coltrane (John’s wife) Illuminations. It was Santana and some members of his band and Alice on keyboards and Phil Brown on tamboura. If you visit a used record store it’s worth seeing for the pictures in the inner sleeve. It’s Carlos first foray into what I’d call really out there jazz. I’m pretty sure the label thought it was commercial suicide because it made Caravanserai sound downright accessible by comparison. Cool she got a test pressing! There was a string section, a full band with jazz legends Dave Holland and Jack deJohnette, Alice on organ and just a really eclectic record. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illuminations_(Alice_Coltrane_and_Carlos_Santana_album) for more info.

pardyhardly What it is, and I say this from experience, when you grow out of your youth, 18-30, things begin to matter, Legacy matters and having the past brought up when you are now an adult, makes all those mistakes coming back and you're left with saying, that was then, I am different now. Family knows the story because they are family. For me, I never thought I would survive the 60's but because life became more important than anything else, here I am at 68.
