It was cool to see this suggested after your main patio build video. One of my first thoughts was “Well what happens to the water at the bottom of the slope once you finally get it away from your house, isn’t it gonna pool there if there’s no drain?” Seeing this one suggested made me chuckle a bit. I knew it! Glad it worked out for you!
As a landscaper😊 I do want to say that you could also have added plants ☘️ almost along your fence line there, so it would reduce the water too. That little patch of grass. Isn't that thirsty😂
Great job drain is working great but you may want to address the standing water at your fence that you showed it will promote dry rot and you will be regularly replacing fence posts.
Thank you for getting straight to it and not adding a bunch of unnecessary talk. It's very much appreciated! How do you achieve the slight slope? Do you just use a level when you're digging or laying the pipe?
Thanks for the video. Looks like you achieved your desired result. I also just completed a backyard drainage project with french drain and a sump pump . The whole process was a learning experience. I did lots of research, the french drain man and apple drains both have lots of great information.
Great vid! I subscribed, hoping for a follow up vid after the next wet season :) I’m thinking of doing a project myself for diverting downspouts into a rain garden or something
Why not try to find discharge by filling with your hose and if that fails have a plumbing company scope the system. Seems like the real lesson here is to make sure when you build and slope your patio it’s built high enough that the slope doesn’t drop below the grass.
Great video Hello from Hudson Valley NY! Quick question What type of gravel are you using? All purpose? My concern is drainage for the freeze / melt periods. Not draining quick enough and then freezing quickly , then heaving the corrugated pipe out of slope . Or solid pipe for that matter. Appreciate your input. Keep up the vids. (Subbed!) God bless
Why a french drain? French drains are for groundwater, your problem was surface water. Catching the water at the surface means starting your run at a higher point. The edge of your patio was lower than your ground. Your first step should've been to grade the yard away from the patio. Surface drains can help, but again, proper grading would've sent the water to the edge of your yard. That fence is also a problem, it holds water in your yard. How is your neighbor's yard pitched? Does he have water pooling after a storm? Water runoff doesn't' t see survey lines. Was the pipe you used perforated? French drain pipe is perforated, drain pipe is solid. Why did you tap into the pipe you found without running water thru and cleaning it to see where it goes? I didn't see your house, do the downspouts dump on to the patio?
After watching French Drain Man videos, I can tell you that this system will fail so badly and so quickly. 1. Surface water into the French drain 2. Downspouts into the French drain. 3. Landscaping fabric to keep the weed out instead of Geothermal fabric. 4. Not even knowing where the existing pipe leads to. 5. No sand between barrier and sod. Grass will die quickly.
surface water into french drain isnt a problem not sure where you got that, fdm does it all the time. also be advised fdm is selling products, so of course he's going to say certain things, such as buy all his products theyre the best. which he might not be wrong, but they do tend to be more costly. i am not sure this fabric wont work, although yes i would be concerned. it might be fine. downspouts into french drain being a no no i agree with. it might be ok but why risk it.
@@cryengine_x I got that from FDM. He usually collects the surface water into non-perforated pipes that also tie to downspouts if necessary. Says that he doesn't want all that stuff mixing with wrapped french drain perforated piping
@@Jon-e7w hmm i thought fdm just mixed them fine. i believe he doesn't want downspouts into a French, ue to shingle gravel, which i agree with. he always calls it french drain yard drain or whatever lol. he means yard drain as something different. its just water, i cant see why it matters. unless theres something with sediment, which i think he uses the catch basins to collect sediment so it should be ok. so i could be wrong but my interpretation is, you can put grates and catch basins in a french drain to catch surface water and it's fine. but. i'm thinking now i may be totally wrong cus i think his french kits never have any catch basins which i thought was weird...but whether he does or not i dont see a problem with it thats my plan. because i have both a soggy area of the yard and surface water in the same area, so what am i gonna do put in two drains in the same space? and yeah the french uses slotted pipe, but water should flow through it fine because the void is the key thing.
Not good materials to use for a long term fix. Real cheap corrugated. Better to use PVC even though it costs a lot more. At the very least use a high quality corrugated.
@@cryengine_x I'm not saying PVC is better, the best choice is quality agricultural corrugated pipe. That cheap stuff used in the video won't last 10 years. Also the issues with PVC pipes cracking seem to be unique to the pipes sold in north America, here in Europe we use pipes that are slightly more flexible and use rubber gaskets instead of glue joints, you never see those pipes crack. look up KG 2000 pipe, they are amazing
Wow, all of your videos are so thorough and direct, and they visually convey exactly what you're explaining. Great job! This was very helpful.
I watched you patio video back then and you did a great job, but you should definitely have watched more videos before starting this project

Will watch your videos until the day I die. Thanks for posting.
I'm still here waiting for the next Poststructure video. 👴
Super clear and concise, great job. Rare to see videos like this.
You should have more views, you have the best patio videos 👍

Wow so that base held up!!! Awesome
I would have went with your second idea with deep hole put sump pump in that sucker if it does over flow turn on pump. Great video thank you!.

Bro this is super helpful
Very detailed, informative video. Thank you for taking the time in making and uploading. I too know the weight capacity of my sedan :-))
thank you for sharing!
How does the water get into the pipe. Is it perforated?

Why didnt you give the existing pipe a test with your water hose instead of assuming it would do its job ..?
Great video
Hello from Hudson Valley NY!
Quick question

Not draining quick enough and then freezing quickly , then heaving the corrugated pipe out of slope .
Or solid pipe for that matter.
Appreciate your input.
Keep up the vids. (Subbed!)
God bless
Did you level it
is the paver base causing the drainage issue? it may block the drainage even if it has small holes.
all these ppl with soft ground are so lucky. my clay is hard as a rock.
I live in N Texas. All clay.😅 pain i tell ya.
@@AnhNPham-dz2cv yup, north/east texas here!
Impressive! Does the french drain also handle the gutter downsput water at the one corner of the patio? - Greetings from Germany
It does!
May I ask why you decided to go with 2 different slope directions instead of 1? I really appreciate your videos! Thank you so much
57 stone was the correct choice over the pea gravel

Corrugated... NOOOOOO!!!
Thanks very much. Plumbers quote me for ~$5k for some similar job.
Do you know roughly how many hours you spent ?

Just an FYI.... watch the "French Drain Man" videos. you would be surprised on how wrong you did this.
I am looking to do a similar project, anything specific done wrong here other than what is mentioned in the video?
