@@cwx8 Raptor has been on pause for about a year because I've been dealing with my moms health issues. I actually wound up moving in with my mom a week ago. I am actually in my old bedroom right now where I started Raptor(very wierd). Anyways I should be back on Raptor after mid summer.
Just recently played through it. This was the first game i ever bought via the shareware prompt. Used my allowance and convinced my parents to send a check in the mail. I can still smell the diskettes.
I fondly remember playing this game long time ago as a kid with my uncle. Sadly he passed away several years ago. To be honest, we never did ever beat this game. I will for sure buy this once it comes out, and hopefully I could share that I finally completed this game when I visit him at his grave.
Scott Host, that game that you made was one of my all time favorite childhood classics! My dad and I would spend countless hours playing that game. I don't think we had the full version game though. My dad only beat the first boss, and he thought that was hard! I showed him an emulated version of this game some years ago on DOSBox. Some of the stuff I showed him, like the Outer Regions map and the more powerful weapon upgrades, he had never seen before. Was very fun. But wow, 30 years! This game still looks great to this day.
I think 90% of the people played the shareware version. I started on a remaster of Raptor 2 years ago but its been on hold 1.5 years due to various reasons and should be back on it by end of summer.
30th anniversary, now and forever, congrats on a legend that still holds up decades later Scott! Will be there for the 300th Anniversary! Also neat choice for someone to do the new music.
This game also arrived and had an impact in the South American region, although it did not have a Spanish translation, but every computer at that time had the shareware version. I remember that almost 40 friends from school played it and were looking for the full physical version, I bought it on Steam and I hope they can finish the remixed so I can buy it.
My favorite shmup still to this day, happy birthday! If I had the skills I'd sure like to make some more levels with new enemies and backgrounds. Nice music!
I will be back on it eventually. I dont know if u heard the tale but around 1.5 years ago my mom had some health issues and it derailed my life and my work. She is getting better and I'm slowly getting back on track. Actually moved in with her again this weekend and setup my PC stuff in my old bedroom where I started Raptor in 1992. IRONIC
I've spent many happy hours playing this game including back in the 90s from one of those old pirate compilation CDs but also purchased directly from 3D Realms in 2009. What strikes me now are the unusual departures from arcade SHMUP convention (and even other PC SHMUPs like Tyrian and Stargunner) in the small playfield (especially in the Y axis), large degree of destructible structures, and comparatively large sprites. It makes it feel much more intimate compared to the larger playfield of other shooters. The other thing is just how economical the game is about animation. Most enemies and projectiles have no frames of animation at all, but the illusion is provided by details like the engine exhaust cycling and smoke trails and a handful of blinking pixels that evoke a lot more movement than is actually animated.
Happy birthday to one of the best game of my childhood, actually a part of my childhood. This game kept me company for long afternoons when my mom was at work :D. I remember all the music and all the levels by heart (well, at least the Bravo sector :D).
Beautiful game. Nothing more to say... except, I see Scott gave us Galactix as well! I especially loved the bomb bay door animation and the tractor arm mechanic-acquiring spoils never felt more rewarding!
I first played this in 1995 when mom bought me a set of 4 shareware games published by Gold Medallion Software, which also included DOOM 1.666, Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold, and Epic Pinball. The 90's were the best times.
Dude i wish i could kiss you bro for making this game. I love this game very much and to this day, its still a very nice game. When is raptor remix game coming out?
Long story short my mom had some health issues so its on pause for a while but I will be back on it eventually. I did get DemonStar remaster on steam ( game i made after Raptor )
Its a ways off I had to put it on pause because im dealing with my moms health issues. Should be back on it in 4 months or so as its impossible to guess
The new music isn't "bad"; but, the original music is definitely way better. I find it similar to the difference between One Must Fall 2097 music, and Battlegrounds music.
One of the crown jewels of the 1990s. The sprite work still looks fantastic to this day. Happy 30th Raptor!
it will look better eventually

Got half the game as a demo on a CD from a box of cereal nearly twenty years ago, never gotten so much enjoyment for so cheap since. Thanks Scott!
I can’t wait for the release, i played it in the 90s, and i have the 2015 edition.

Yeha back then u had to be stingy with graphics because not a lot of ram. But most all the shots and missiles had a minimum of 2 frames
