I think a really tasty example of the bucket of fish fill is in the intro of an old Finnish rock track "Juhannustanssit" by Dingo. You can find it on TH-cam. Quuppa, the drummer, is very underrated here in Finland, but he sure knew his way around those triplets and how to mix and things up by applying that fill onto any part of the bar. It might be an obscure song but I suggest everybody to check the first four bars out. Excellent and simple, and has helped me a lot.
I love that crash man! My favorite crash would probably have to be a K Custom Hybrid 18" Medium Thin Crash. Thanks sooo much! I will be using this drum fill all the time! It's so simple but sounds amazing and sometimes it can even sound complex.
Meinl 17" Soundcaster Custom powerful crash. Bright, open yet full sound with a wide spectrum and I really like the tone of the cymbal, produced due to its size.
I've also heard that "bucket of fish" referred to as "Taking a dump"... my favorite crash is a 14inch Zildjian thin fast crash.. Love your lessons, they are the best of all I've heard... I'm 74, still actively giggin' and intend to as long as I am able. Thanks Stephen for your TH-cam posts.. Good Grooves!
I like these "Practical Drum Fills" lessons. I kinda got stuck with coming up with effective fills and this helped, thanks man. My fav crash is now my old ride, 201 Paiste 18" crash/ride.
Thanks for a great tutorial, I actually found your video while looking up the origin of the term bucket of fish. I used to hear it when I worked with the traveling circus. The drummer in the circus band would use it as a clown did a prat fall or after the ringmaster told a lame joke that got very few laughs. Back in the 50s and 60s night club comedians would have a small house band and the drummer would sometimes wear out his snare drum doing the bucket of fish
Really enjoy 16" and 18" Sabian HHX evolution crashes. Took me over a year to save up to buy them but I love how well they open up so I had to get them!
Ive played since tghe 70s and meinl byzance cymbals are my fave of all time, 18 inch thin crash, it sounds like angels singing, i also have 16 inch thin and med crash and a 20 inch med ride all meinl, the ride is gorgeous too, their just the best to me
paiste 2002's have always been my favourite cymbals. Not just crashes, most of there line. the crashes in particular are so versatyle, very warm sound but still crisp, there fairly thick cymbals aswell, i find they also last way longer than other makes in that they dont loose there sound so quickly over time.
Every drummer should know this, it's so simple and you can squeeze it in wherever you want. I remember seeing a video on youtube a while ago where the guy was calling it 'taking a dump' hahaha, that stuck with me. Awesome lesson Stephen! I love my Sabian AAX-Plosion crashes, I've got a 16" and a 20". The 20" is a total beast, I never crash that thing without ear protection. It sounds like a gong if you slap it with your hand.
Haven't practiced any drumming in years, two days and I'll finally have room in my new place to set up. I'll be checking out more of your videos just to get back into the groove. Subbed
I don't use any crash cymbals right now! Except for 2 as hi hats. On my left there is a beautiful 22" Dream Vintage Bliss though. HUGE and trashy with a surprisingly nice bell.
This fill got me into wanting to play drums when I heard Steve Smith use to great effect in Journey's 'Separate Ways'. My current fave crash is the A custom thin 16" I managed to snag one in very good condition off the 'bay for 1/2 price of new. Cuts like the A line is known to do, but also has lot of wonderful rich overtones. My first foray into higher end cymbals from entry level stuff. I now know what the extra money gets you.
My favourite crash was a Zildjian Edge razor thin crash 16". I would love to find a new one since the one I had was already old when I bought it and it is dead now.
I knew you were going to get a cymbal from the Byzance Vintage series! My fav cymbal right now is my Istanbul Mehmet 20" Sultan ride... but I'm thinking on getting a sand ride. Those sandblasted cymbal sound so awesome!
It's time to get a deal with Meinl, don't you think? That would be awesome! Hope you get it, you really deserve it. Meinl is making some great cymbals, and it's making things complicated for the big 3!
Hey Steve, great lesson on this easy to apply but very versatile drum fill! Going to add this to my bag of go-to's. Keep up the great lessons! BTW....Sabian Artisan 16" is my weapon of choice.
Love your lessons, I do however have a suggestion, as a newbie it can be difficult to see which drums your hitting. Hope this makes sense. Keep up the great work helping us newbies.
I'm waiting for my 19" Byzance Traditional Medium Thin Crash also I wanna buy a 18" Mb20 Medium Heavy Crash but I like/love these: 18" A custom projection crash 18" K Constantinople crash 18" K Dark Medium Thin Crash Cymbal - Brilliant 19" K Custom Hybrid Crash Cymbal
Jus purchased a 22" sand ride and so far i love it but i also love my 22" sabian ed thigpen crystal bell ride, these are so hard to find and happen to be cruisin GC.com when it was up for grabs
HA! I'm watching this, and just realized I was using this fill at various points during my band practice session the other day. :P Oh, as for Crashes, I currently use a 16 inch Zildjian ZBT. Say what you will, but I like the ZBTs. :)
To me it was always just the fairly unimaginative "baddle-a-dum", but yeah, that one's one in the bag! Usually played as part of a longer sequence which - in your parlance - would be "Bucket o' fish HEADS! Bucket o' fish HEADS! Bucket o' HEADS!"
Sabian 18" hhx evolution crash... you can beat the shit out... it's sounds beautiful... you can strike it normal... it's beautiful... you can use mallets.. guess what.. it's beautiful. Darks highs sustain and decay is perfect
Hey I really enjoy your lessons and they have really improved my performance. I play for my local church and was wondring if you could do a lesson on minimilistic play or minimilistic fills. Thanks, godbless
Never heard to it referred to as "Bucket of fish" before, but hearing it now it totally makes sense. I learned this fill listening to Bonham I'm pretty sure. Learned it a long time ago and you're right, once you got it you get a lot of mileage out of it
Makes me want to go to Captain D's for lunch. Well, maybe not. Enjoyed the lesson anyway. Keep up the good work. When is the heat gonna leave Nashville? Hot hot hot! I crash on an 18 inch K Custom Dark. Got it from Drum Pickers here in Music City. Nice guy, great prices and he works for Pearl Drums.

I LOVE my Meinl byzance jazz thin ride in 20". I use it solely as a crash and it's amazing. I get compliments everywhere I go on it!
I've also heard that "bucket of fish" referred to as "Taking a dump"... my favorite crash is a 14inch Zildjian thin fast crash.. Love your lessons, they are the best of all I've heard... Paiste 2002 20 inch. B.T.W. , Love the sound of your new addition!
Twisted Sister "We're Not Gonna Take It" is a good example as this as a part of a groove. I call this Fruit-Of-The-Loom
I like these "Practical Drum Fills" lessons. I kinda got stuck with coming up with effective fills and this helped, thanks man. My fav crash is now my old ride, 201 Paiste 18" crash/ride.

My 14" Stagg Medium Crash. I'm in love with it's sound.

This fill got me into wanting to play drums when I heard Steve Smith use to great effect in Journey's 'Separate Ways'.
