I just watched Flight of the Navigator with my 9-year old son for the first time, and I was a bit scared, as this is one of my favourite movies from my childhood. Thank goodness he loved it, but when it finished he said 'Daddy, how did they make that ship fly?' I came straight here and showed him. You are now an intrinsic part of our shared experience of this movie. Thank you.
The movie also made it to USSR, and while in 1970-s the Union was making some great youth sci-fi shows, it was no more in 80-s and 90-s. And that movie did hit the spot! There was also Star Wars, some episode with the death star. And, while Leia was charming and tie-fighters were gorgeous, but... Still too much of a show. The Flight was... Believable.
Wow. How the heck did you get your hands on the original stop motion models for those stairs?! That's insane. I can't believe they're even still around. This is why we love you, Alan.
It's crazy how stuff like that works. I know someone who has an archive of nearly every possible thing from a movie from 1974. Tickets, promotional material, 16mm print, he even got the discarded outtakes nearly 40 years later! Especially at the time, it wasn't common to keep every single thing from production. Stuff just kinda goes places. People make copies and something that was lost, shows up 38 years later in a warehouse. Maybe captain d had connections, but most of the time stuff just shows up somewhere someplace someday.

I've never seen someone so perfectly project their own love for something onto me, as I have with this. You can just tell how much he loved making this. It's beautiful.
This was so insanely good. The script is sooooo good. 40 minutes flew like 10 because I was having such a good time. Also now I like the movie x3. But no, seriously, I think this channel has probably the most entertaining scripts in TH-cam.
I've said before it's these kinds of guys who should be wealthy from their work. Not the latest asshat, clickbait youtube drama queen who can talk about nothing for ten minutes and make a million dollars.
Anyone seeing this movie for the first time today has no idea how mind blowing the special effects were back in 86. Production values on this video are crazy high by the way, great job.
You had me really excited at the end, like you were gonna announce that you were gonna be directing the sequel. That would explain how you had all of those props in your possession. And why Alan was the star of the video.

@@HighlandLaddie I thought I recall somewhere that movies don't like to make much from leftover props (Hollywood accounting or something), which would be my guess that the movie studios probably didnt care, but I imagine someone who worked on it would have want to keep them.

Disney, you need to license this documentary for any and all future Flight of the Navigator home entertainment releases. And yes Alan, I would like to hear about Alan Silvestri and his use of the Synclavier.
I stumbled upon the bass line for “The Ship Beckons” recently, then had to figure out how to play it by ear. I swear it’s inspiring me to learn music theory. There’s just something about it that’s fantastical and otherworldly, yet still “Disney” almost.
Maybe if it was purely entertainment. This video is informative and educational and should be seen by anyone. America thought the same about education, that it should be put behind a paywall. The people with massive student debt aren't impressed.
oh my, ive never heard of this movie but the way alan talked about it was so heartwarming and fascinating ! the effects were indeed impressive for an 80s movie, it makes me wanna look it up and watch it myself
This is so cool to watch. It's clear you absolutely love this movie, and I do too, so it's brilliant to just sit here and watch and admire the work. Thank you so much
Really incredible the lengths they went to to achieve some of these effects. And thanks for going to such lengths yourself to make such an in-depth and entertaining video about it! Need to go watch Flight of the Navigator now...
This must have taken months and months of hard work, research, design, writing... It's incredible people are putting together this level of quality, _far_ greater than what you'd see on TV, on a free video site!
TH-cam's algorithm needs to be changed to promote this level of hard work and talent. We need more people like this making more content. And yes, I will wait months for each one.
i didnt realise id sat there for 40 minutes. CD had me wanting more. i loved this movie so much as a kid and this is absolute perfection for anyone interested in FX- or the artistry of films in general
i also know more about Latvia than i ever would've otherwise simply for the wonderful rabbitholes this beautiful man sends me down. GIVE THIS MAN A JOB AT ILM.
This video is so magical. There's something so joyful about listening to an expert in their field explain something they're deeply passionate about. The subject matter itself, plus the fact it's Alan himself talking adds a healthy dose of whimsy too. Love these videos, love your work.
Here we are a year after this video originally aired and Alan's passion to make a sequel still brings me to tears. Seeing people express their love for something is just the most beautiful, inspiring, and human event you can witness. Been a fan for over a decade and this is still my favorite thing this channel has ever produced.
Seriously - at first I was thinking "this is just an excuse to show off his sweet accurate 3d model of the ship, isn't it?" but then he breaks out the other props and interacts with it in water, which... well, I still don't know - did he make 3d props of stop motion models to make a stop motion animation of a 3d model? D: Clearly, we'll need a Captain Dissolution episode to review his intern's video.
This was my first Captain Disillusion video. Embarrassed to say I had never heard of him before, because THIS WAS AMAZING. Now I've seen 30 more of his videos and I'm a fan forever. Bravo, CD! I wish I could "like" this a hundred times. What a beautiful love letter to this iconic film I've adored for decades. Thank you!!
Very nice! I am 45 years old and just went back watched this movie for the first time in maybe 20 yrs. As a kid this movie and “Explorers” has had me looking up my entire life. :)
Can we just appreciate that animation has come so far that he just animated substantially portions of their non-animated recording stuff for demonstration's sake?
@@Stowneyo What I'm referring to is that the animation capabilities of a guy with a PC and a few weeks far, far exceed what could be done 40 years ago with a massive budget and dozens or hundreds of people.
I thought this was going to be an interview with Alan or something, but it's a 40 minute breakdown of a movie. And it's completely packed with VFX knowledge. Even for someone not at all in this field it's incredible to watch your analysis and expertise at work. I would like to see more of this intern going forward...
Given some of the dross on TH-cam has millions of views, this channel is criminally underrated. I can't imagine the effort that went into this video alone.
When my 5 year old son and I had coivd, we locked ourselves in my bedroom and watched all my favorite movies as a kid. At the end of the week after watching some seriously awesome well known classics I asked him which was his favorite, he said (without hesitation) Flight of the Navigator - my all time favorite as well. I couldn't stop smiling.
As a stop motion person, the way you did the stop motion section and the look on your face when you're animating is amazing and hilarious. This whole video is incredible, I can't even imagine the amount of work it took. Such a deep love of the movie and the craft of filmmaking, I am absolutely floored by this deep dive into the VFX.
You're dragging the art of scrutiny out and into the light, in a way that makes people appreciate it rather than scoff. The Mrs. and I watched this entire video over dinner, and we both enjoyed it totally. Thanks!
ive seen this movie about 600 times and re watch it every 3 years ... last time i watched it was just over a year ago but perhaps it will dine my plate tonight ... again :)
So I just watched FOTN for the first time ever, went to find some reddit reviews afterwards, came across a link to this video, and just sat slack jawed for over 41 minutes. The amount of effort and care put into this movie was utterly mind bending, but then watching you remake the stop-motion bit just for the hell of it, and all the other fascinating tidbits throughout this video. Damn Cap, you've done it again. They had better give you the director role for the sequel I swear.
I have never appreciated you more as an artist and filmmaker. The sheer amount of effort you've put into this is astounding and if you somehow end up directing the sequel, it would be in good hands.
I don’t know what part I should be more awed at. Learning about the amazing production behind this movie. Or the crazy care and skill that went into making THIS video…. This needs to be shown in film schools if it isn’t already.
I would assume he had a tracked mask of the plate, since it would be easy to set up and since his shirt didn't overlap the blue screen anyway, it doesn't matter for the keying.
18:50 OMG Your rendering skills are amazing! The fact that you can reproduce all the mechanical contraptions made to achieve these shots and reflection shots is so incredibly helpful for the viewers understanding of HOW IT WAS DONE. You really go above and beyond with these, most people have still images of a device, you replicate entire mechanisms, then run them in time REPLICATING the whole creative process to achieve it. This is really well done, thank you for your work. Bravo.
Oh, I never forget about Captain Disillusion. Same thing for History Buffs. I just know that I need to be patient for their content. I mean, I don't WANT to be patient for it, but I am. Kind of. ... Damn it, Nick Hodges, where's the next video!? Actually, wait, let me check his socials... He just posted today that it's coming tomorrow! This week is amazing.
Crying a bit as it ends, man. Thank you for putting so much work into highlighting how much work others have put in, while giving me a healthy dose of nostalgia and keeping me hungry for more progress and creation. 42 years young, here. I love what you do, sir.
I have waited 35 years to see how this movie was made, and you did not disappoint. In fact, I was surprised at almost every turn during this video. Thank you.
This video should be on Disney+ with the movie. This is one of the best "making of..." videos I have seen. Usually there isn't a behind the scene footage on DVD, but when there is it doesn't pick apart their own work. Well done CD!
So Alan actually bought the miniature props for the stop-motion stair sequences, and recreated the shot, by hand, just for under a minute of what we see in this episode? Captain D really doesn't give Alan enough credit.
well considering the material this channel covers, and the fact he has over 2m subs, I might imagine they loaned them to him, seeing as they were rejected props.
How has this guy not got his own Netflix show - the quality and content of this episode was absolutely captivating. I can’t get enough - please make more movie specials!
The production quality of this is honestly better than half the stuff on Netflix, and all for free on TH-cam! That's an easy patreon contribution from me!
At the beginning: "Damn, 41 minutes long, oh well, I have time for a change" At the end: "Wait, what do you mean it's over?" Excellent! The Captain does it again! That movie was fun, and I had no idea there was so much craft behind the effects, I should rewatch it someday soon
If I had a genie’s wish, I’d wish that Alan does get the chance to direct or take part in a reboot/sequel of Flight of the Navigator. It’s so heartwarming to see how his childhood film is still a part of him, and to revisit it with such passion to share with the world. This is a unbelievably fantastic video Alan, I appreciate your childhood, and it makes appreciate mine a bit more.
I found out about this channel because this video bubbled up by the algorithm about a year ago. I'm so glad it did. I'm now a big fan of The Captain, and I've watched several of his videos. I have to say though, coming back to this one, I think it's my favorite. The dude's also unbelievably lucky that he got to get ahold of the original props. Man, I'm jealous.

It's everything a classic 80s kids movie should be.

I've seen a lot of videos that try to convey the sense of wonder and awe for a piece of media they experienced as a child, but this just does it like no other.

You had me really excited at the end, like you were gonna announce that you were gonna be directing the sequel.
That would explain how you had all of those props in your possession.
And why Alan was the star of the video.
I couldn’t believe I was _disappointed_ when the captain came back. I love captain d but damn I was like “yes. Yes! YES! YE- oh. He… isn’t? It’s over now?”

Alan is such a dork for Flight of the Navigator that he probably owns the props.
I still cannot get over the love, time and work that must have gone into this video. I wish we could clone Alan to do every single "Making of" documentary ever. Astounding video.
Alan deserves the chance to write and direct the sequel 100%.

That was legitimately the shortest 41-minute premiere in my entire TH-cam watching decade. Love the amazing insights on this one, Capt.!
Capt? You mean, Alan.... ;)
I love how he demonstrates how messy bluescreening something highly reflective is while wearing a blue shirt at 17:53... It's such a flex

Been a fan for over a decade and this is still my favorite thing this channel has ever produced.
I hope 35 years from now someone makes a 40 minute video about the production and effects in VFXcool: Flight of the Navigator
The fact that you can't trust anything in his set is real until he interacts with it speaks volumes about how good of a vfx artist he is
Seriously - at first I was thinking "this is just an excuse to show off his sweet accurate 3d model of the ship, isn't it?" but then he breaks out the other props and interacts with it in water, which... well, I still don't know - did he make 3d props of stop motion models to make a stop motion animation of a 3d model? Clearly, we'll need a Captain Dissolution episode to review his intern's video.
@LilHeinz94 he also showed in a previous video how to do that and it still requires kickass vfx skills
