Ahh the sphere. I wish they had explained it like this back in uni. The extent of our instruction was just "ok, kids, draw this" with no explanation of the various parts. Maybe it was just be being slow, but it took me far too many years to figure out *why* this mattered and how to apply it to anything that wasn't a sphere (or cube, or cone). I like how you summarize the concepts again at the very end of the lesson.
Thank you for bringing up the Lambert Scale, don't hear about that often. Personally when I have "drawing block" I like to draw eggs from multiple angles with the occasional sphere. Good job Stephen.
Thats what I did too!! I wanted to teach my friend how to draw portraits and the first exercise before anything was to demonstrate how form works!! And sphere fit perfectly lol.
Stephen, I recently came across to your channel and I would to thank you, because you are one of the most prolific artists, and not only as an artist but as as person who masters the art of teaching.
I'm losing hope in my art journey problem is I feel like I'm not improving instead looping around and around, I think its because when I draw a portrait it doesn't look accurate to the person so, how do I draw it accurately?
Same page. But I'm not losing hope, I'm learning how to make hope. Instead of being overwhelmed why not try to understand your weaknesses? Improve to those. And maybe, you need to learn more and absorbed what you learn then put it in paper. Sometimes you need to make your own strategy, it's your own, that's how creative mind develop. Developing your own unique way of solving things.
@@LuckerStomp not anymore, I forced myself to try to get into drawing as much as I can, but I learned that, you can always change paths, Even Im not drawing right now, the memories and all i learned is still in my mind...
I conceptually understand shading a how light behaves, especially in my work in photography. It's applying that concept knowledge on a physical page that is tripping me up. My execution is not at the level I would like. I'm gonna do a bunch of these egg studies until I get it to a standard that satisfies me
light and shadow.... we meet again my enemy. Thank you, Master Stephen. So I can go little by little solving it.
You got this!

This was the best most detailed video I've seen on this subject. Thank you.
Squinting lowers the contrast of the lights and darks in shadows, making them appear more as unified masses, thank you for this usight 👍🏻
You're very welcome!

It’s the go to project for a reason 👌
Thank you for everything you do
I follow you from Iraq and your explanation helped me a lot and improved my level of planning

Wow, thank you!
wow excellent lesson!! ❤
Sad part is no matter how hard I practice I can't seems to get it very much circular. It's frustrating but the one I love .
The specular highlight depends on the ior of the material. Reflection refraction.
As a sphere i confirm this is true
Hi Stephen thank you so much for this video!
Great video 🎉
Thank you!
Reminds me of Evolve Artist. Do you know it?
the moment i've been waiting for
July 1st the whole lesson lands 👍
thanks, your videos are great.
Hi, Stephen! Just wondering, what kind of paper do you use? Thank you!

@@TH-camArtProject man i already stopped drawing 3 months ago, instead i found a new path, i started doing other things like sports
@@Aaron-k7g Good for you! I hope you excelled at your chosen passion.
@@Aaron-k7g Are you drawing anymore? Struggling with likeness happens to everyone and it's a big reason most people stop drawing.

Could you make a studio tour?
Coming soon…
Great video, can you recommend me some paper of graphite drawing
Stonehenge is a good one
Hey Stephen, what made you ditch the outline of the form ending, compared to your older sphere vid?
Nice. The shading of the light form being non linear was interesting. When do you add reflected shadow from the table the the ball though?
Later on- mostly darkened areas around it.
Can you recommend some good pencils??
Tombow Mono 100's

Cool, this looks like and excellent reason to become a patreon of yours. Do you include good reference photos of spheres in your patreon?
Yep 👌
We are following you from Turkey. Can you open the Turkish language to automatic translation? Thanks in advance 🖤
❤
I see the sphere I sleep 😴, jokes aside thanks for the video
No worries 😉
You are Andrew Huberman of Drawing
Have you drawn animals or even a dragon? Dragons are cool lol
