I was very lucky to have seen Queen about 12 times, first at Hammersmith and last at the Saturday Wembley concert in 1986. I honestly wasn’t expecting much from this new song, but it’s so atmospheric and well produced. A new favourite…

I wonder if maybe Freddie had to sing this song but wasn't ready for it to be heard , couldn't face finishing it. So there it went underwraps. Grateful this soulful reflection has been released. Hearing that voice anew...The man is back even when we never let him leave. Lovely graceful reaction.

Hi, thank you for watching. I agree, if this had been released at the time his illness may have overshadowed the song. This was the right time. Phil

      Possibly
But in an interview he said they had 30 possible songs
Ifcit didnt gel straight away hed move on to the next one
And you had to choose the ones that worked best together
I think the song was as much about answering to your choices in life taking responsibility

    Wow Phil,
I’m so GLAD I watched this… Your words are so insightful.
….My all-time FAV Queen song is:
    “DON’T TRY SO HARD”
Similar type of personal “Life Message” in the lyrics, and Fred’s STUNNING high vocals are SPINE TINGLING…
So, I guess for me now, the “fab four” (formerly a “trifecta”) of “Life Message” songs are:
    “Who Wants To Live Forever”
    “Don’t Try So Hard”
    “Face It Alone”
    “Mother Love”💕
    I subscribed… THANK YOU again!

Same generation as you, Phil- you describe many of our first exposure as teenagers to Queen in 1973 in the U.S. I was a fan from the first chords of 'Keep Yourself Alive' and, of course, have been a diehard now for decades. I had to laugh a little when you first started talking. I saw them live 3 times- 1980 in Memphis & 1978 on Halloween in New Orleans. But the first time I saw them was in Memphis on 4/20/1974 with Mott the Hoople. At that time, Queen was a bonus- I bought my ticket to see Mott. Maybe I am one of the few? Thank you for giving accolades to Mott the Hoople- I don’t hear that much anymore! Loved your analysis of ‘Face It Alone’ and completely agree with you-the impact of it today is light years beyond what it would have been in 1988. Also, it occurs to me, releasing it then would have possibly drawn more very unwanted media attention to Freddie’s diagnosis, which many of us fans who were dealing with the devestation being wrought by AIDS, up close and personal, were already were beginning to suspect Freddie had contracted and was being treated for. And knowing, back then, it was almost always a death sentence. Thank you, Phil, for this authentic, heartfelt, on on-point video.

Hi Kerry, Thank you very much for watching and sharing your wonderful comment and memories. The Mott The Hoople and Ian Hunter reference is important to me because I feel that Queen were forever grateful for been the chance to support them back in the day. The fact that they sang on Ian Hunters All American Alien Boy years later almost felt like a thank you. I agree if the song had appeared back then the Aids story may have overwhelmed it. Now it can be heard without any baggage and can be an inspiration for us all. Thank you also for you kind words! Phil :)

@@NowSpinningMagazine You’re very welcome. And yes, like you said, they stayed friends, and the gratitude is right up front in interviews Brian and Roger have given over the years since Freddie’s death. There was never any ‘puffing up’ from Queen, no shame whatsoever in having once been another band’s support. And Ian Hunter’s never tried to somehow ride on Queen’s superstardom, has never boasted about his contribution. Such stellar human beings, all of them, in both bands. And how lucky us Americans were- without that Mott/Queen kismet, it may have been much longer before we got to see Queen live, if at all, I shudder to say. Subscribed- keep up the great work!

My first introduction to Queen was via "Killer Queen" in 1974 and it never came from Top Of The Pops or the radio. It's actually so bizarre that it almost sounds like a dream and there is only one logical explanation I can think of for how I got to hear it in a re-run of the TV Series The Name Game starring Gene Barry in that year. I even remember the scene where Gene Barry was breaking into someone's house via the bedroom window. The only logical explanation of how this got to be played during this TV series was that the engineer in the TV Studio at the time must have simulcasted the record over the scene. He also played the whole of the record and muted the sound of the program itself. I thought it was very odd but somehow it did manage to fit in sequence with the film footage.
It was actually the guitar solo on that record that drew my attention to the band and made me go out and buy the album Shear Heart Attack. Still to this day, it's always been my favourite Queen song. I have to admit that as good as this band is or was when Freddie was alive I was never a huge fan of the band and as they went on they got to churn out some right rubbish. Though I thought the 1991 album Innuendo restored much of what had been missing from the band and was perhaps the only album since Day At The Races from 1976 that really spoke to me.
You could say that the band were like David Bowie and moved along with the times which is why their music can be so versatile at times much of it I personally think was well over the top like Bowie and it never sat in with my personal taste. My favourite period of the band will always be that succession of albums that run between 1974 - 1976 and I love A Night At The Opera, especially in surround sound on the DVD Audio that got put out in the early 2000's.
A mate of mine is a massive Queen fan and like me is into surround sound and it would have been back in the early 2000's that he brought me the DVD Audio of their 1980 album The Game for my Birthday. To be honest the surround mix is very good and I thought that may have enticed me to like the album. However, it did not at all and I hardly play it.
I had no idea of this new release and I actually paused this video of yours to go and give it listen before retunring. Your observation of the lyrics is spot on and I will say that the lyrics do resonate with myself especially as I lost my wife to cancer at the end of last year. I guess the reason why I am not so clued up anymore as to what new releases are coming out lately is that I am still trying to get myself back together after all of this and it is hard especially after living with her for the past 42 years. I still miss her dearly and sometimes I feel that life no longer has a purpose. Though of course, I am sure that the words of John Miles back in 1976 "in this world of troubles, my music pulls me through" will also start to resonate properly with me once again. Time is the healer and so too is music in many ways.
To be honest I think "Face It Alone" is a good song though it does not entice me to go out and spend the ridiculous amount they are asking for this boxset. The fact that the album The Miracle does not even come with a 5.1 mix is another key factor as to why this boxset does not interest me in the slightest. In the words of Deep Purple back in 1971 is it getting better? The answer has to be NO! NO! NO!

Hi Lee, thank you for watching and sharing your musical memories. I am very sorry to hear about your wife passing. I do try to be careful about the words I use because I know everyone is touched my life. It is still very early days so just take each day as it comes. Some songs mature with age as we get older we hear them in a new way and you just get it, and you think yes that was a bloody good song. As you go thow life some songs just connect with things that that have happened in your life. We are spinning our life stories.

I have not heard the song, but have seen the details of the Boxset. I am quite disappointed with it. The two disc set only gives one further disc and is around £20.00. The box set includes a DVD. Why? People have Blu Ray Players now. One of the CDs is just interviews which I find pointless after one play. Such a shame they haven't included much new material as there are a number of still unissued tracks they could have used too. For what you actually get, the box set is expensive.

I have just watched the video once. It's a decent song and at least the vocals on it are good too. The vocals on the last album after Freddie's passing were not that great which was understandable.

95 made in Heaven Freddies vocals
87 Heaven for everyone Roger solo album but Freddie recorded lead as well at that time, he did backing on some tracks
( 87 Freddie recorded Great pretender and Barcalona album I think his vocals were fantastic)
91 A Winters tale gentle song but I love his vocals on that
85 made in heaven off his solo album
85 Born to love you off his solo album
88 TMLWKY I think his vocals are good
      83 let me live
89/91 ? don't fool me he only did bits and Richards put it together enough for them to work on as a song
80 Freddie was playing around with it's a beautiful day
91 mother love he didn't finish it but even Roger said some of his vocals on that are beautiful and difficult
88 my life has been saved I don't think there was anything wrong with his vocals off the miracle album
