As a hobbyst photographer on a budget, the Meike looks to be a very very good option.

Yes agree. I mean who wouldn't want the Nikkor 58 0.95 Noct, but only a few really lucky person can afford one

Nothing is going to be incredibly sharp at 1.2. One is a lens from the 80s, full of character, and the other is a budget friendly lens. in terms of chromatic aberration, this lens is made for night time photography. In broad daylight i struggle with keeping things properly exposed at f1.8, and at f2 the nikkor looks perfect. so it comes down to the lens itself. The Meike is very tempting... it almost seems marginally better in terms of image quality. but I think I would want the Nikkor. Those lenses are a piece of art in themselves. the power coated steel, the colourful numbering... Just holding one feels like its something magical. I would rather hold it and think "this is an engineering marvel of the 80s", vs "wow this company has come a long way".

      Fair comments!
I agree the old Nikkor lenses are a piece of art. It's something the new Nikkors are missing. I love the old metal build , and feeling.

@@TheRealRichardWong true. Though in practice i find the newer ones just as rugged. The plastic keeps them light and reduces the impact. As long as the drop is from a reasonably low height, the plastic just bounces instead of denting.
I really would love to see more vintage styling on it though. Coloured numbers, the scalopped focus ring.

Yes the newer polycarbonate plastic or whatever they used are more shoulder and drop friendly. But just doesn't have the same feeling. Of course optically the new lenses are amazing too

The red ring flare is especially distracting and not at all attractive. The corner sharpness is also not good enough for a lens with 12 elements in 2020, the Nikon only has 7 elements, and is from 1978!

    • @TheRealRichardWong

@@drbeardo6960 thank you!! I like the Argus 45 0.95 more as it has slightly better flare control than the Meike

To be honest without putting them side by side and do a comparison, it's hard to comment on all the details. But lens flare is one big thing that makes me feel the Laowa would be a better choice between the two.
