The secret to the Hiwatts are the Partridge Transformers, they're actually so over specced, they really belong on some huge HIFI amp. That's the problem with buying second hand. in the 1980s a lot of DR103s were bought, the transformers stripped out for use in some HIFI amp and then sold on with lesser replacement parts. Make absolutely sure, if you're buying second hand, that the amp still has its original Partridge Transformers. I cannot emphasise this enough, they are the key to the Hiwatt tone and there's a lot that have been changed for lesser parts, they do not sound anything like the originals when driven hard. In the mid to late 80s in the UK you could buy a DR103 for 150 bucks a pair for 250-300. To buy transformers of the same spec of the Partridges would have been more like 300-500 each. Hence, many Hiwatts were raided for them.
Call up Heyboer Amps for replacement transformers for your Hiwatt. Handmade in Michigan. I built my own Hiwatt DR504 clone with Heyboer Hiwatt clones and the amp sounds fantastic.
I read an article where Hartley Peavey was discussing the importance of the transformer for tone. If I remember correctly he mentioned it is absolutely crucial and one of the most important pieces of the puzzle.
I have a Carvin X100B Reissue and I love it. Those amps were originally designed to have the clean tones of a Fender and the dirty tones of a Marshall. They were available with EL34 or 6L6 power tubes. I bought the one with EL34's because I own another amp (Peavey VK100H) with 6L6's.
The Fender Twin is an underrated amp for rock...problem is you need to crank it and if you like having walls, you probably don't want to do that, but I think Steve Jones' guitar tone on Never Mind the Bollocks using one really represents how great it can sound overdriven. (his had Gauss speakers in it which cut the treble and increased mids). Those Pistols songs are relatively slow, but they sound super fast and hard because of that tone.
I watched a video of Marshall Tucker playing "Can't You See?", and you could see FOUR of them lined up behind Toy. It made me wonder if he had to glue his boots to the stage to avoid being blown off of it, lol.
I'm glad to see the Supersonic on here. Super versatile amp with great sounding crunch- AND fantastic cleans. And if some snob or grognard starts talking shit to you about it, simply turn it up until it drowns them out, lol. The 60 watt one is ungodly loud, and should do the trick nicely!

My favorite that I own is a Kustom 72 Coupe designed by James Brown and built in Cincinnati. Great tone and lots of power! It is a 72 watt 2x12 combo that still uses a little of the Kustom tuck & roll trim.
I have a Crate Turbo Valve 6212. It is the predecessor to the Blue VooDoo. I run it to a 4-12 cab and it rocks like you would not believe! 🎸🎸🎸. Lee Jackson was in on its design if I'm not mistaken. Very underrated amp!
The Blue Voodoo sounded great, but the ones I tried had a clean channel that was way louder than the overdrive channel. My main guitarist in those days went the Sovtek route and rocked a Mig 60 with an H&K cab for over a decade, and now I have that head.

I think the greatest amps is more about the player that used them back in the era they came out in. I guarantee in my little practice room - I will sound like garbage with a 100 watts Marshall amplifier. But when I plug into my orange crush 12 - pure rock n roll heaven!!! I can’t turn up those amps to make them sound good. I don’t have a coliseum of fans to play to. It’s just nostalgia. I get the right overdrive, sometimes tube based, into my Vox Pathfinder 15R, holy crapola! What a tone.
I own a USA made Classic 50 212. I did the Blue mods to it and installed two Eminence Red Coat Governors. That amp is a beast. Classic Rock tones for days and so much more. My Delta Blues 115 has the best Boost on any amp I've ever played through. Definitely worth checking out. The only Orange amp I own is a Rocker 32. Holy crap is it awesome. It's the first & only el84 amp I've ever played through that sounds fat like a 6L6 sounds fat. Usually el84 amps tend to sound a little thin in comparison to a 6L6 amp. Just my opinion. Not the Rocker 32. It was a surprise when I first plugged in to it. If I had to pick one of these three amps it would be the Rocker 32. It's a great amp for classic rock tones as well as the usual Orange thing they are known to do.
I remember when I was about 14, I was in my first band and using a Crate 90 watt, 15 inch combo amp for my bass. A B90XL, I believe. The guitarist was using a 2x8 Crate combo. One day, his parents buy him a Blue Voodoo 120 and 4x12 cab. That amp was wicked! There was nothing I could do to be heard over that amp. Actually, I'm pretty sure there are frequencies in my ears that are no longer there because of that amp......but it did sound amazing.
Great video today Robert. I have a jcm800 and a dsl100, which I absolutely love. I have a Peavy classic head in the original blonde tweed along with 2 Peavy 2x12 blonde cabinets that have a great clean tone. All of my Fender amps are spectacular for when I play GFR and iron butterfly. My Orange terror head and cabinet will shake the house. I have an old crate combo I use for playback tracks from the laptop. Good job and I agree with all of your list. Thanks
My personal favorite is an AmpegVH 140c It's like a JCM900 crossed with a Roland jazz chorus 120 Plug in a Les Paul and let er rip! Zakk Wylde and John Sykes tone ALL DAY LONG
Awesome picks. I've always wanted a supersonic-versatile. And a H&K Tri-Amp. (Underrated brand) AND: a silver jubilee. It's definitely a disease... I think more people should and probably eventually will catch on the Marshall Vintage Modern (yes, I want one) Prices are going up, but I highly recommend a Mesa Mark IIB, if you find a deal. Close enough for a IIC+ for me (loop mod causes some to call it a IIB+) Despite my amp fetish, and all the money I've spent, I feel like a failure. Don't have an Orange, a Vox, or Hi-Watt-Love them all...
@@RobertWJackson ...I know... I had been researching various tube amp heads for awhile within a certain price range. As much as I would have probably liked the metal tones with the Blue Voodoo, I settled on the Carvin V3 for some of the features and I wanted a good clean tone channel. I'm one of those pedal junkies that uses most with a clean channel. I like to play at bedroom sound levels too and so the option of switching between 100W, 50W, and 25W is nice. It's a step up from the Gallien-Krueger Backline 100 combo that I've been using since the early 90s.
on the subject of crate, the vintage club series is also great. I recently aquired a vc5212. They are very hot running amps wich can lead to problems. I just run a small fan behind it. Also, mark knophler used and endorsed them, and billy gibbons also. Good vid dood!!
Crate ? Really? I got to play the red Crate 1/2 stack. It was the house amp at The Joint in Beverly Hills back in the day. For bass they had an Ampeg svt. The Crate sounded great! We made a live cd. Great gig, great club. L.A. Studio legend Waddy Watchell had big jam nights there too. Many pro jammers wailed out! Though Waddy brought those huge Fender combos with 3- 10's. The expensive ones. ($3,000?) Cheers!

Cool video, love that you reminded folks about the origin of Peavey's 5150/6505! 😁 I'm currently driving a Peavey Ultra 112, that thing is freaking amazing! Part of the Ultra Plus line, it's the granddaddy to the XXX, JSX, 3120, and XXX2. It was made to compete with Mesa's Mark III series at the time, and it actually competes quite well for a third the original price! Which brings me to an idea - have you considered doing a bang-for-the-buck amp compilation?

My favorite rock amplifier is the Carvin X-series. According to Carvin it was conceived as a signature amp for Frank Zappa. It was used by Alex Lifeson throughout the 80s notably Moving Pictures. Also used by Steve Vai, Marty Friedman and many others. Admittedly the Lead Channel on its own can be underwhelming but with something boosting it. It will hang in there with the Marshall's and Mesa's tonally. When given the choice of which of my amps I had to sell. I sold my Peavey 6505 and kept the Carvin. For me it sounded better than the Peavey and its got a really great clean channel unlike the Peavey.
I like number 8. The Fender amp is cool to play guitar through.It is also cool when you plug a bullet in it and play harmonica and it gives you that dirty Blues sound that a harmonica player needs. So you can say that it's a great sounding amp for both guitar players and harmonica players.If I had the money and the room for it, I would make it my number 1 amp.
I haven't tried the Blue Voodoo 120 but I do own a Crate Blue Voodoo 150 amp head. Its tone is like someone crossbred a 5150 and a Triple Rectifier and raised the unholy spawn born out of crossbreeding them on steroids. It's a high gain beast of an amp. The guy who sold it to me had the stock tubes replaced with Genalex Gold Lion 12AX7 Gold Pin preamp tubes and had the power amp section re-biased with Gold Lion KT66 Gold Pin power amp tubes. It's a truly underrated gem of an amp and at just $400 I scored quite a deal with that amp. I also own the BV412ST 4x12" speaker cab with original speakers that were made for Crate by Eminence, I paid barely $300 for it. I have heard people complain that the tone of Crate BV150H was way too scooped for its own good but I have never faced any problem with its tone. Maybe it has something to do with the original 6L6GC tubes used on that amp, because with the KT66 this amp just sounds huge and tight and cuts through the mix pretty well, but damn it's loud as hell.
YES the Crate Blue Voodoo. I have owned a first generation 50 watt Blue Voodoo and currently owe a last generation 2005 120 watt Crate Black Voodoo with matching SL Cab. Perfect for Rock and Metal!
I played a cartoon logo BV120 for a summer...definitely had a quartet in the power section, I think they were 6L6s, but its been forever. Had the blue and gold with the matching 240w Vintage 30 birch cab. I could not get along with it...I tried. Boutique drive pedals, and even with a different pre through the loop. I just couldn't jive...similar thing with 900s. I struggle to be truly happy, I guess I'm just a Boogie guy through and through. The BV cab with V30s was phenomenal though. Criminally underrated.

No offence Robert but I would have expected a Marshall Plexi to out rate the other Marshalls on your list when you consider the players who used them eg. Jimi Hendrix, Paul Kosof, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Richie Blackmore, Angus Young, Randy Roads, Robin Trower, Peter Townsend, Ian Moss, Gary Moore etc etc etc.
Gigged a TSL 100 for 6 years very good amp , it finally got the conductive PCB disease a new mother board fixed that, the DSL sufferers from that too, upgraded to a JVM 100h but now use boss katanas.....not allowed to gig any more though are we!
one of my favorite amps was Mesa Tremoverb. The one I had was covered with some sort of red alligator looking stuff, while the control panel was flat black with these knurled chrome plated barrel knobs. All in all it was a stunning amp in appearance and sound. It was a 2X12 combo, with a pair of Celestion Vintage 30's in it. That was a big part of it's sound. This was heavy as hell too, I used to get the other guitar player in our band to help me lug it in! I'm with you all the way on the Marshall amps, right now I'm playing thru Marshall MF350. It's running into Marshall 1960 B with 4 Celestion Vintage 30s in it. I know your gonna say it sucks because its a hybrid amp. I've played a ton of amps in the 40+ years I've been playing and this amp sounds damn good to me, its got one if not these best reverbs I've ever heard. I love this thing.

Also the new Orange is nothing like the old Orange. When Gibson bought them and brought them back in the 90's they stayed true to the originals.. But it cost too much and they abandoned it. Orignal Orange guys then came back out, but went full steam ahead into high high gain amps. Ok the AD 140 wasn't crazy high gain, but after that they did. I had an Original OR 120, Gibson era OD 120 and an AD 140.. The OR had no master volume, so it needed pedals (I used it for bass) the OD also called the OR Master Volume did, but it wasn't able to get the high gain of the modern Orange amps... The AD 140 had 2 lead channels (voiced different but both were Gain channels...) more gain than the OD, but still nothing like the amount of gain that Orange is now known for. Very unforgiving amps as well... I could get away playing sloppy chords on a JCM 900 but with the OD every nuance was there and mistakes were accentuated... made me play better so not really a bad thing.
I had a chance to own a used Blue Voodoo half-stack as a 15 year old and since I didn’t know my elbow from my asshole at the time, I didn’t buy it cause I thought my friends would make fun of me for having a blue-colored amp. I needed up going with a new Crate solid-state half-stack. They were the same price at Guitar Center and if I had someone to knock some sense into me, I would have gotten the Voodoo. I may actually look for one! At least one of my amps that I own did make your list, my beautiful Jubilee!
Nah, Crate didn’t have any tube amps in 1985, and Eddie Van Halen wouldn’t have been caught dead using their solid-states. He was still very comfortable in his seat on board the Marshall train at that time. On the other hand, I have no idea what Sammy Hagar may have been using back then, but I highly doubt it was a Crate amp because he was only known for using the Blue Voodoo (and later his signature Red Voodoo), which didn’t come out until 1995.

Hi Robert, agree on them JCM 800 amp, mine is a JCM800 Bass Series, from 1976, sadly with Yugoslavian Sylvania tubes, but I have learned to live them, sound put through 2 cabs with JBL K140 speakers (the 1s with Alnico cones), so when playing live I kind of "gets my message through/out", to manage sound I use a Boss GT board, with all my gigs preset, and then a digital line from the Boss board to both the Marshall, and the PA-mixer Do make a video on bass amp, and someone on tubes for both preamp and output-amp, becourse many off these old amp are starting to need new tubes. nice channel - I`ll subscribe - and give you 1 like - see U

On the Marshall JCM800 2203X reissue, it's the same circuit, same amp, and everything as on the original, just they have added an effects loop, which to my knowledge wasn't present on the original JCM800. So gear purists, don't snub the reissue, it's the same JCM800 we all know and love, just with an effects loop. :) Regarding the 5150 and the 6505+, purists will say the 6505+ isn't a 5150. Which is silly, considering it's the same circuit and schematic that James Brown designed. They just can't LEGALLY call it a 5150, so they called it the 6505+. It's still the same amp, though. And as far as tone for metal, they really need an overdrive to tighten up that low end.
Nope, I made a list of greatest ROCK amps ever and didn’t include the Marshall Plexi. Between the JCM800, JCM900, JCM2000, and the Jubilee, I figured we already had plenty of Marshall representation here. ;)

@@RobertWJackson Couldn't agree more! I have 2007 Marshall JCM 2000 DSL 100w and for me it is just about the perfect rock amp head. It just consistently sounds good and takes pedals extremely well. Through a 2x12 or 4x12 it just sounds like rock and roll to me.
Great list! Great to see some Crate love! :) I own a Stealth 50 from '93 and a Vintage Club 20 from '94 and I would love to get my hands on the Blue Voodoo 60w combo with the cartoon logo. And, while I adore the 90's Crate stuff, I wouldn't get anything past that. I didn't care for the Palomino at all. The Vintage Club totally crushes it. I first fell in love with the Crate sound (I call it the sound of St. Louis) because my guitar teacher had one of the rare solid state/tube hybrid amps (I forgot the name) and it was the first time I'd heard distortion right in my dining room xD Big fan ever since. The Stealth takes 6L6's (I have Svetlana's in there) and the Vintage Club takes EL84's. Question for you, Robert, since you loved that early Blue Voodoo you had, what kind of tubes were you running in it? Thank you for the video! Great list! :)
Mine had Ruby 6L6’s in it with a hodge-podge of different preamp tubes that the previous owner had put in it. Looking back, I wish I’d retubed it with JJ’s or something like that.

Second generation? To my knowledge there was only one generation of the TSL’s. (The DSL’s are now on their third gen.) I don’t care for the TSL’s because they’re extremely treble-y and brittle sounding, and they’re also known to have their share of reliability issues. The JVM Series amps that replaced them, however, are among my favorite Marshall amps ever made.
@@RobertWJackson Yeah the second generation. they made two runs. The first were terrible. Second lot had an improved motherboard. Recognised by being a lot darker in colour. And a few other things from what I have read. Mine is a 2006 model from what I remember. I have to disagree with you about the sound. Mine has a very broad and responsive EQ. However I do run a 10 band EQ in the loop. Just for my personal taste. I would love a JVM. The 2000 was all I had a budget for at the time.

Being a young dumb guitar player in the later 90s, i actually had a Jcm900 Dual Reverb 4500 for a whopping MONTH and got rid of it. Why? The guitar store I bought it from were being kinda shitty and didnt supply the cabinet i bought and paid for ( a 1960A Marshall 4x12) and instead "loaned" me a 1965A 4x10 cabinet that sounded god awful. After a month of never getting the 4x12, i took the amp back and got a refund, went to another guitar store and bought a Jcm900 SLX 2500 with a 1960A Cab. I happen to still own the SLX and cabinet and its been awesome, but i kick myself in the ass for returning the Dual Reverb and am COMPLETELY confident now that the sound problem wasnt the head, but rather the shitty cabinet. Live and learn!
Sad that I didn't see my new amp after all the research I did. Amps are hard for me than comparing pedals let's say. Bought a Roland JC-40 (granted not the most expensive).

I would say Mesa boogie could say something like that. Mark what ever. Orange is frankly a very powerful amp. And I know a lot of players who has several different kinds of amps on the stage. Including myself. Today you can shift a lot easier than before. I just tried the new 25w recto reverb from Mesa pure love, but pretty expensive . As the only negative issue. So guess what I gonna bye. So without further ado Mesa is my head amp. The rest is just showing off 🎸🙃
I would like your opinion I’m choosing an amp head more so a high gain one.Would you pick the Randall Rd20 or the Laney Irt15 I know the main difference is the laney only has one channel. Thanks so much I’m advance! Love the channel
If you want the ultimate in tonal flexibility and functionality, I would actually spend slightly more and get the Laney IRT-Studio. It’s all tube and actually has three channels. I own one and I use it all the time. If that doesn’t interest you, I’d definitely go with the Randall RD20H. I own one of those, as well, and I love it. It surprisingly has one of the best clean channels I’ve ever heard, and the gain channel has PLENTY of gain.

This is the second piece of gear that I will have bought after getting your awesome opinion when I’m unsure of options.
Speaking of rock amps how do you feel about Panama amps? I'm thinking of either looking at the loco or shaman. I already have a 5150 iii, peavey triple x, and blackstar but they seem like they have a more classic rock sound than those amps.
Prianha is it good? There well sub 100 shipped on the used market. I was gonna get one but once I seen it had only a single tone for it's EQ stage I passed on one. I heard you need a 7 band EQ an a tube screamer to help boost the gain.

Fender is great clean pedal platform. The Fender Bassbreaker or Fender Blues JR is great pedal platform just add a high gain OD pedal.

I'm glad to see the Supersonic on here. Super versatile amp with great sounding crunch- AND fantastic cleans. And if some snob or grognard starts talking shit to you about it, simply turn it up until it drowns them out, lol. The 60 watt one is ungodly loud, and should do the trick nicely!

I have a ‘91 peavey classic-50 4x10. It’s very loud & loves my pedals.
It’s a home/recording amp now. Way too heavy to lug around at my advanced age.
My favorite that I own is a Kustom 72 Coupe designed by James Brown and built in Cincinnati. Great tone and lots of power! It is a 72 watt 2x12 combo that still uses a little of the Kustom tuck & roll trim.
Not only was he the Hardest Working Man in Show Business, he also designed a truly great amp for Ed Van Halen. James Brown was a Renaissance man.

I have a Crate Turbo Valve 6212. It is the predecessor to the Blue VooDoo. I run it to a 4-12 cab and it rocks like you would not believe! 🎸🎸🎸. Lee Jackson was in on its design if I'm not mistaken. Very underrated amp!
The Blue Voodoo sounded great, but the ones I tried had a clean channel that was way louder than the overdrive channel. My main guitarist in those days went the Sovtek route and rocked a Mig 60 with an H&K cab for over a decade, and now I have that head.
Alex Lifeson is back to Marshall style amp called Lerxst by Mojo Tone.
Thank God, his tone sucked with those light up amps!

I think the greatest amps is more about the player that used them back in the era they came out in. I guarantee in my little practice room - I will sound like garbage with a 100 watts Marshall amplifier. But when I plug into my orange crush 12 - pure rock n roll heaven!!! I can’t turn up those amps to make them sound good. I don’t have a coliseum of fans to play to. It’s just nostalgia. I get the right overdrive, sometimes tube based, into my Vox Pathfinder 15R, holy crapola! What a tone.
Hank Williams III plays those Crate Blue Voodoo 300 among others. I have the Marshall JCM 900 SLX.

I own a USA made Classic 50 212. I did the Blue mods to it and installed two Eminence Red Coat Governors. That amp is a beast. Classic Rock tones for days and so much more. My Delta Blues 115 has the best Boost on any amp I've ever played through. Definitely worth checking out.
The only Orange amp I own is a Rocker 32. Holy crap is it awesome. It's the first & only el84 amp I've ever played through that sounds fat like a 6L6 sounds fat. Usually el84 amps tend to sound a little thin in comparison to a 6L6 amp. Just my opinion. Not the Rocker 32. It was a surprise when I first plugged in to it. If I had to pick one of these three amps it would be the Rocker 32. It's a great amp for classic rock tones as well as the usual Orange thing they are known to do.

Carcass and Suffocation (and many other REALLY heavy bands) disagree with you on the 5150 as a great metal amp that can hang with the big boys.

What do they consider to be a great metal amp? I have a Fender tube amp, but would like to get a metal amp for my San Dimas and Soloist next year.

I remember when I was about 14, I was in my first band and using a Crate 90 watt, 15 inch combo amp for my bass. A B90XL, I believe. The guitarist was using a 2x8 Crate combo. One day, his parents buy him a Blue Voodoo 120 and 4x12 cab. That amp was wicked! There was nothing I could do to be heard over that amp. Actually, I'm pretty sure there are frequencies in my ears that are no longer there because of that amp......but it did sound amazing.
To thoroughly service the Hughes & Kettner Triamp would be one hefty bill. Cleaning 33 pots??
Great video today Robert. I have a jcm800 and a dsl100, which I absolutely love. I have a Peavy classic head in the original blonde tweed along with 2 Peavy 2x12 blonde cabinets that have a great clean tone. All of my Fender amps are spectacular for when I play GFR and iron butterfly. My Orange terror head and cabinet will shake the house. I have an old crate combo I use for playback tracks from the laptop. Good job and I agree with all of your list. Thanks

I think more people should and probably eventually will catch on the Marshall Vintage Modern (yes, I want one) Prices are going up, but I highly recommend a Mesa Mark IIB, if you find a deal. Close enough for a IIC+ for me (loop mod causes some to call it a IIB+) Despite my amp fetish, and all the money I've spent, I feel like a failure. Don't have an Orange, a Vox, or Hi-Watt-Love them all...

@@RobertWJackson ...I know... I had been researching various tube amp heads for awhile within a certain price range. As much as I would have probably liked the metal tones with the Blue Voodoo, I settled on the Carvin V3 for some of the features and I wanted a good clean tone channel. I'm one of those pedal junkies that uses most with a clean channel. I like to play at bedroom sound levels too and so the option of switching between 100W, 50W, and 25W is nice. It's a step up from the Gallien-Krueger Backline 100 combo that I've been using since the early 90s.

on the subject of crate, the vintage club series is also great. I recently aquired a vc5212. They are very hot running amps wich can lead to problems. I just run a small fan behind it. Also, mark knophler used and endorsed them, and billy gibbons also. Good vid dood!!
Crate ? Really? I got to play the red Crate 1/2 stack. It was the house amp at The Joint in Beverly Hills back in the day. For bass they had an Ampeg svt. The Crate sounded great! We made a live cd. Great gig, great club. L.A. Studio legend Waddy Watchell had big jam nights there too. Many pro jammers wailed out! Though Waddy brought those huge Fender combos with 3- 10's. The expensive ones. ($3,000?) Cheers!

I'm currently driving a Peavey Ultra 112, that thing is freaking amazing! Part of the Ultra Plus line, it's the granddaddy to the XXX, JSX, 3120, and XXX2. It was made to compete with Mesa's Mark III series at the time, and it actually competes quite well for a third the original price!

I agree with you on the Jcm800, just a really great sounding amp that works for just about anything. I tried a plexi that was dimed with a power attenuator and that thing was killer too!

My favorite rock amplifier is the Carvin X-series. According to Carvin it was conceived as a signature amp for Frank Zappa. It was used by Alex Lifeson throughout the 80s notably Moving Pictures. Also used by Steve Vai, Marty Friedman and many others. Admittedly the Lead Channel on its own can be underwhelming but with something boosting it. It will hang in there with the Marshall's and Mesa's tonally. When given the choice of which of my amps I had to sell. I sold my Peavey 6505 and kept the Carvin. For me it sounded better than the Peavey and its got a really great clean channel unlike the Peavey.
What about Fender Deluxe Reverb? Mesa Boogie California tweed, Vox Ac 15 has wired.with Blue Alnico Speaker? Fender Champion 57 Eric Clapton.
I have a Hiwatt Custom Little P. It's impossible to get any breakup without a pedal. Awesome amp.
I like number 8. The Fender amp is cool to play guitar through.It is also cool when you plug a bullet in it and play harmonica and it gives you that dirty Blues sound that a harmonica player needs. So you can say that it's a great sounding amp for both guitar players and harmonica players.If I had the money and the room for it, I would make it my number 1 amp.

I haven't tried the Blue Voodoo 120 but I do own a Crate Blue Voodoo 150 amp head. Its tone is like someone crossbred a 5150 and a Triple Rectifier and raised the unholy spawn born out of crossbreeding them on steroids. It's a high gain beast of an amp.
The guy who sold it to me had the stock tubes replaced with Genalex Gold Lion 12AX7 Gold Pin preamp tubes and had the power amp section re-biased with Gold Lion KT66 Gold Pin power amp tubes. It's a truly underrated gem of an amp and at just $400 I scored quite a deal with that amp.
I also own the BV412ST 4x12" speaker cab with original speakers that were made for Crate by Eminence, I paid barely $300 for it.
I have heard people complain that the tone of Crate BV150H was way too scooped for its own good but I have never faced any problem with its tone. Maybe it has something to do with the original 6L6GC tubes used on that amp, because with the KT66 this amp just sounds huge and tight and cuts through the mix pretty well, but damn it's loud as hell.
YES the Crate Blue Voodoo. I have owned a first generation 50 watt Blue Voodoo and currently owe a last generation 2005 120 watt Crate Black Voodoo with matching SL Cab. Perfect for Rock and Metal!
I played a cartoon logo BV120 for a summer...definitely had a quartet in the power section, I think they were 6L6s, but its been forever. Had the blue and gold with the matching 240w Vintage 30 birch cab. I could not get along with it...I tried. Boutique drive pedals, and even with a different pre through the loop. I just couldn't jive...similar thing with 900s. I struggle to be truly happy, I guess I'm just a Boogie guy through and through. The BV cab with V30s was phenomenal though. Criminally underrated.
I am a proud Stealth 50 and Vintage Club 20 owner. I'm looking for the BV60 combo right now. They're hard to find.

No offence Robert but I would have expected a Marshall Plexi to out rate the other Marshalls on your list when you consider the players who used them eg. Jimi Hendrix, Paul Kosof, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Richie Blackmore, Angus Young, Randy Roads, Robin Trower, Peter Townsend, Ian Moss, Gary Moore etc etc etc.
Gigged a TSL 100 for 6 years very good amp , it finally got the conductive PCB disease a new mother board fixed that, the DSL sufferers from that too, upgraded to a JVM 100h but now use boss katanas.....not allowed to gig any more though are we!
one of my favorite amps was Mesa Tremoverb. The one I had was covered with some sort of red alligator looking stuff, while the control panel was flat black with these knurled chrome plated barrel knobs. All in all it was a stunning amp in appearance and sound. It was a 2X12 combo, with a pair of Celestion Vintage 30's in it. That was a big part of it's sound. This was heavy as hell too, I used to get the other guitar player in our band to help me lug it in! I'm with you all the way on the Marshall amps, right now I'm playing thru Marshall MF350. It's running into Marshall 1960 B with 4 Celestion Vintage 30s in it. I know your gonna say it sucks because its a hybrid amp. I've played a ton of amps in the 40+ years I've been playing and this amp sounds damn good to me, its got one if not these best reverbs I've ever heard. I love this thing.

Also the new Orange is nothing like the old Orange.
When Gibson bought them and brought them back in the 90's they stayed true to the originals.. But it cost too much and they abandoned it.
Orignal Orange guys then came back out, but went full steam ahead into high high gain amps. Ok the AD 140 wasn't crazy high gain, but after that they did.
I had an Original OR 120, Gibson era OD 120 and an AD 140.. The OR had no master volume, so it needed pedals (I used it for bass) the OD also called the OR Master Volume did, but it wasn't able to get the high gain of the modern Orange amps... The AD 140 had 2 lead channels (voiced different but both were Gain channels...) more gain than the OD, but still nothing like the amount of gain that Orange is now known for. Very unforgiving amps as well... I could get away playing sloppy chords on a JCM 900 but with the OD every nuance was there and mistakes were accentuated... made me play better so not really a bad thing.

I had a chance to own a used Blue Voodoo half-stack as a 15 year old and since I didn’t know my elbow from my asshole at the time, I didn’t buy it cause I thought my friends would make fun of me for having a blue-colored amp. I needed up going with a new Crate solid-state half-stack. They were the same price at Guitar Center and if I had someone to knock some sense into me, I would have gotten the Voodoo. I may actually look for one! At least one of my amps that I own did make your list, my beautiful Jubilee!
I think @ 85 Farm Aid Eddie and Sammy both used Crate amps onstage.
Nah, Crate didn’t have any tube amps in 1985, and Eddie Van Halen wouldn’t have been caught dead using their solid-states. He was still very comfortable in his seat on board the Marshall train at that time. On the other hand, I have no idea what Sammy Hagar may have been using back then, but I highly doubt it was a Crate amp because he was only known for using the Blue Voodoo (and later his signature Red Voodoo), which didn’t come out until 1995.

The Lee Jackson ‘Stealth’ was the amp the was supposedly the EVH amp. The Blue Voodoo’s weren’t released until 1995.

Hi Robert, agree on them JCM 800 amp, mine is a JCM800 Bass Series, from 1976, sadly with Yugoslavian Sylvania tubes, but I have learned to live them, sound put through 2 cabs with JBL K140 speakers (the 1s with Alnico cones), so when playing live I kind of "gets my message through/out", to manage sound I use a Boss GT board, with all my gigs preset, and then a digital line from the Boss board to both the Marshall, and the PA-mixer
Do make a video on bass amp, and someone on tubes for both preamp and output-amp, becourse many off these old amp are starting to need new tubes.

On the Marshall JCM800 2203X reissue, it's the same circuit, same amp, and everything as on the original, just they have added an effects loop, which to my knowledge wasn't present on the original JCM800.
So gear purists, don't snub the reissue, it's the same JCM800 we all know and love, just with an effects loop. :)
Regarding the 5150 and the 6505+, purists will say the 6505+ isn't a 5150. Which is silly, considering it's the same circuit and schematic that James Brown designed. They just can't LEGALLY call it a 5150, so they called it the 6505+. It's still the same amp, though. And as far as tone for metal, they really need an overdrive to tighten up that low end.

@@RobertWJackson Couldn't agree more! I have 2007 Marshall JCM 2000 DSL 100w and for me it is just about the perfect rock amp head. It just consistently sounds good and takes pedals extremely well. Through a 2x12 or 4x12 it just sounds like rock and roll to me.

Great list! Great to see some Crate love! :) I own a Stealth 50 from '93 and a Vintage Club 20 from '94 and I would love to get my hands on the Blue Voodoo 60w combo with the cartoon logo. And, while I adore the 90's Crate stuff, I wouldn't get anything past that. I didn't care for the Palomino at all. The Vintage Club totally crushes it. I first fell in love with the Crate sound (I call it the sound of St. Louis) because my guitar teacher had one of the rare solid state/tube hybrid amps (I forgot the name) and it was the first time I'd heard distortion right in my dining room xD Big fan ever since. The Stealth takes 6L6's (I have Svetlana's in there) and the Vintage Club takes EL84's. Question for you, Robert, since you loved that early Blue Voodoo you had, what kind of tubes were you running in it? Thank you for the video! Great list! :)
Mine had Ruby 6L6’s in it with a hodge-podge of different preamp tubes that the previous owner had put in it. Looking back, I wish I’d retubed it with JJ’s or something like that.

Second generation? To my knowledge there was only one generation of the TSL’s. (The DSL’s are now on their third gen.) I don’t care for the TSL’s because they’re extremely treble-y and brittle sounding, and they’re also known to have their share of reliability issues. The JVM Series amps that replaced them, however, are among my favorite Marshall amps ever made.
@@RobertWJackson Yeah the second generation. they made two runs. The first were terrible. Second lot had an improved motherboard. Recognised by being a lot darker in colour. And a few other things from what I have read. Mine is a 2006 model from what I remember.
I have to disagree with you about the sound. Mine has a very broad and responsive EQ. However I do run a 10 band EQ in the loop. Just for my personal taste.
I would love a JVM. The 2000 was all I had a budget for at the time.

Being a young dumb guitar player in the later 90s, i actually had a Jcm900 Dual Reverb 4500 for a whopping MONTH and got rid of it. Why? The guitar store I bought it from were being kinda shitty and didnt supply the cabinet i bought and paid for ( a 1960A Marshall 4x12) and instead "loaned" me a 1965A 4x10 cabinet that sounded god awful. After a month of never getting the 4x12, i took the amp back and got a refund, went to another guitar store and bought a Jcm900 SLX 2500 with a 1960A Cab. I happen to still own the SLX and cabinet and its been awesome, but i kick myself in the ass for returning the Dual Reverb and am COMPLETELY confident now that the sound problem wasnt the head, but rather the shitty cabinet.

Sad that I didn't see my new amp after all the research I did. Amps are hard for me than comparing pedals let's say. Bought a Roland JC-40 (granted not the most expensive).

I would say Mesa boogie could say something like that. Mark what ever. Orange is frankly a very powerful amp. And I know a lot of players who has several different kinds of amps on the stage. Including myself. Today you can shift a lot easier than before. I just tried the new 25w recto reverb from Mesa pure love, but pretty expensive . As the only negative issue. So guess what I gonna bye. So without further ado Mesa is my head amp. The rest is just showing off 🎸🙃

I would like your opinion I’m choosing an amp head more so a high gain one.Would you pick the Randall Rd20 or the Laney Irt15 I know the main difference is the laney only has one channel. Thanks so much I’m advance! Love the channel
If you want the ultimate in tonal flexibility and functionality, I would actually spend slightly more and get the Laney IRT-Studio. It’s all tube and actually has three channels. I own one and I use it all the time. If that doesn’t interest you, I’d definitely go with the Randall RD20H. I own one of those, as well, and I love it. It surprisingly has one of the best clean channels I’ve ever heard, and the gain channel has PLENTY of gain.
Sweet thank you soo much I think the irt studio might be overkill since I won’t need added options for recording and such, so i will go for the RD thank you again you are literally the only youtuber I trust with questions. This is the second piece of gear that I will have bought after getting your awesome opinion when I’m unsure of options.

Speaking of rock amps how do you feel about Panama amps? I'm thinking of either looking at the loco or shaman. I already have a 5150 iii, peavey triple x, and blackstar but they seem like they have a more classic rock sound than those amps.
I actually own 4 Panama heads (Shaman, FiveWatt, Fuego X, and Fuego Hot Rod), and 2 cabs (Tonewood 2x12 with Purplebacks, and a Prometheus 4x12).

Prianha is it good? There well sub 100 shipped on the used market. I was gonna get one but once I seen it had only a single tone for it's EQ stage I passed on one. I heard you need a 7 band EQ an a tube screamer to help boost the gain.
It’s not the most versatile amp in the world, but I use mine just plugged straight in all the time.
