One thing you didn’t mention: the little minor-ish phrase in the curse’s motif that reappears IMMEDIATELY after the Prologue in Belle in a major-ish transformation as Belle’s theme, hinting not at all subtly that Belle is the counter to the curse. My God, Alan Menken carried the entire golden age single-handedly, I swear.
I will say that as lovely as the music itself is, the sound effects that play during the scene have their own little musical qualities and REALLY elevate the scene to the next level. Separated from each other, they dont have nearly the same impact.
Tell me about it. As much as I love the music, it doesn't have the full impact without the sound effects or even the Prince and Belle briefly speaking to each other.
It was very interesting to see how the register in the woodwinds and string leave a lot of space for the brass’s register! That’s definitely something I never really thought of, thank you!
Incredible video and analysis of this beautiful cue! I didn’t notice the importance of the reference to the lyric “but she won’t discover that it’s him til chapter three” until you pointed it out! And also the fact that the original music which conveys the prince’s “curse” is referred to here as well but in a different mode to make it brighter. Your transcription was stunningly accurate :) if you ever tackle another Menken cue I’d love to hear your take on action cues from Aladdin (ie. Cave of Wonders, The Battle)
Le Sigh. I’m quite obsessed with this film, and your analysis of this score spoke to the music theory student in me. I most certainly appreciated how you illustrated some of the themes and hidden motifs. Particularly “here [in Act 3] is when she meets Prince Charming,” further illustrated the incredible intentionality of absolutely everything in this film. You have a fan in me, sir. I’m going now to watch the Mufasa analysis and visit your Patreon😊🌻🤴🏽🥰
Thank you so much! I have a better understanding of this, while this musician is geeking out at the phrases and sequences that's happening here. It has been nostalgia ever since I was little and this piece has inspired me to write music myself. Again, thank you so much!😊
Are you aware of ASMAC? we actually got to hear the original orchestra recordings for beauty and the beast on the lecture with danny troob it was pretty amazing.
oh...and one more thing....Wagner did the motif thing and the raising a 3rd thing a lot.....that's where all the great composers/orchestrators get their tricks....but you probably knew that already....have fun!
This tutorial is amazing Zach. Thank you for that! However, it's a bit pity you gave up on showing the keyboard when playing. It was really extra helpful with The Lion King. Anyway, waiting for more great stuff!
Thanks for the feedback!! I've been frustrated with the poor webcam quality of my overhead, which is why I omitted it for this video... it'll be back in some capacity in the future once I've got a setup I like! ;)
How do you program those string runs? Do you slow down the tempo and record it, then put the tempo back to normal? Or do you already have the fast piano playing skillset to record it all okay?
So in this case I played them in and cleaned them up with quantization, BUT sometimes when I'm good about it I'll compose using Logic's Step Editor--kind of functions like a note-by-note input :)
I'm back with a new episode of my monthly Film Scoring 101 series! This one was a BEAST to transcribe. Comment what your favorite discovery was!

Oh my gosh. Recognized that woodwind melody from the beginning but didn't connect it to the lyrics. Mindblown

Love the analysis, and the mock-up was amazing. I subbed your channel, looking forward to seeing more of your content.
Loved the video! Have you looked into the broadway show version where they incorporate a choir to sing the melody? Absolutely beautiful

Why don't they do such memorable music anymore in animations or movies? Oh wait... cause they're really really bad.
