Nice looking stairs, but why did you use interlock pavers instead of steps or caps? The little bumps on the paver are such an eyesore.

For flagstones is thinset or cement mortar better? Also what was that dry looking mortar you put down for the base and to level out the top? Thanks!
Hey! Usually it’s more economical to use a cement mortar to bond to a rough finished concrete pad, and I like to use a thin set like Kerabond to butter the back of each piece for extra bonding power
@@HardscapeCanada I have a concrete footer for the leading edge of the steps but the rest is 4+inches of very small compacted gravel. I was thinking mortar between the front of the stone and the concrete but not sure is I should use mortar between the stone and gravel.

Hey we use a 3/4” road base material to start, then chunks of concrete and mortar etc to fill in behind as well as the stairs get built up to height. Thank you!!

Is the mortar you’re using dry in the beginning step? How do you get it wet afterwards
I wasn't there, but I would have used a dry mix of sand and cement for my base (6 to 1) and the mortar is wet.... Just a dry wet, for control and stability, the tamping shakes up the moisture and facilitates the chemical bonding.
I had a couple questions: The mallet/hammer you are using?
Where do you source your lights?
And do you kind of follow stair code

Hey thank you! Any heavy mallet works, but I have really liked the Simplex mallet with changeable compounds from Great North Hardscape.
I’ve been using In-Lite recently and LOVE them, look for an online course and video coming soon.
Yes the key for staircases is consistency, so the tread depths and heights must not vary more than 1/4” absolutely max.

What type of rock is it? Is it granite? If yes, how hard is it to work with?
Hey it’s a mix of basalt and granite and is quite a hard stone, but does actually chisel and shape pretty nicely

why is it important to apply mortar to the staircase and to the paver instead of just laying the paver in the mortar?
Depends on the type of mortar, if it’s a standard cement mortar then yes it will just be on the step. If it’s a thin set, it’s best to scratch coat the back of the paver too
