  • Climbing has been a common endgame task, but the GDC kicked it up a notch this year. Luckily, Nathan has some thoughts on every level of climbing.

I'm not sure that Level 2 Ascent is legal due to the amount of the robot that you're sticking into the Submersible. The orange box says "The intent of part B of this rule is for the ROBOT to start its ASCENT outside of the SUBMERSIBLE ZONE except for minor elements used by the ROBOT to contact the RUNG." Since you have a significant piece of arm and grabber extending inside the Submersible and none of that is used to contact the Rung, it doesn't seem to meet the intent.

Yeah the level three hang isn’t legal as they climbed from the inside not the outside

@@simplegamerz9485 no, the Level 3 is legal because they start ascending from outside. You are allowed to swing inside the submersible during ascent.

Please keep in mind that we are not official representatives of FIRST and any official answers will come from the official Q&A. The Robits Starter robot climb begins the process of ascending while outside the Submersible. While we believe this meets the requirements in the Competition Manual, the answer to Q&A #79 will determine the final legality of a climb procedure as shown.

The Ascent 3 climb looks illegal to me as you climb from the inside of the submersible when you go from 2 to 3.

I have a question.. when the robot is completely attached to the first bar, can it touch the bar from the bottom submersible? and if so, when we start the hang on the second bar, can the robot still be supported by the bar from the submersible?

10.5.3 in the game manual says "fully support" to refer to the robots hanging only by the bar, though it doesn't say anything specifically about the submersible lower structure. I guess you could use it to do the level 2 ascend and lose contact afterwards to finish ascending and get the points.

Please keep in mind that we are not official representatives of FIRST and any official answers will come from the official Q&A. Q&A #45 and Q&A #49 indicate that a robot can contact the vertical surfaces of the Submersible while ascending.
