The beginning is unclear. You hang the loop on something tie some lark head knots and then there is no longer that loop from the beginning? Hummm...

What happens to the loop at the top from the beginning?

The loop is only a placeholder. The Larks Heads are formed along the midpoint of the string (the theory being you'll have equal amounts left hanging down after). Make enough to go around the button used.
