    Hey Danny I'm really liking your propeller reduction drive! The bigger, slower-turning prop really looks like it gives great climbing performance. I built an electric hang glider years ago using a big Hobbyking brushless motor and direct drive. Powered it with a big pile of cordless power tool batteries. If I remember, the static power was about 8 kilowatts and the level-flight power was around 3 kW.

    • @onedoodadyoung

      @@devilsoffspring5519 yes the bigger 52X24 turning 2200 rpm was the best one after 8 other props.

      @@onedoodadyoung That's what I thought, if I remember right I was using maybe a 32" x 22 two-blade wooden prop using ~8 kW power, full throttle, static.

      @surplusstock8778 Yes the lighter the battery the better the flying !

      @devilsoffspring5519 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@surplusstock8778 No doubt eh! Are you talking about Solid-State batteries (SSBs) by any chance?
      I don't think that technology is ready for prime time yet, otherwise the SSB would be found in everything from smartphones to aircraft. 500 Wh/kg would be just awesome, but batteries that can do that only last maybe half a dozen cycles instead of the customary 300-500 for conventional li-ion cells.
      Developing highly advanced battery technology is an absolutely massive undertaking and can cost billions. My guess is that the world just doesn't really need it yet because today's conventional cells are fine for most consumer shit and more demanding applications just use combustion engines. For example, you can get fully electric cars these days that are very good but even most wealthy people probably just drive combustion engine powered vehicles.

      @@onedoodadyoung well i truly miss the light wing loading of hang gliding. My soaring trike isnt quite as good. But the plusses are i dont need a driver, i have more options on where i can launch, i can go around as much as i want on a lz. My range is exstended and more comfortable. So alot of safety is built into that. But the advantage of flying a lighter wing loading and taking off prone is really atractive on your video and design.

I had scramble to rip the power connector out, tear the pack loose and jettison it. Down it went in a ball of fire. I made a rough but safe-ish landing with a big brown load in my pants!

    • @onedoodadyoung
      @onedoodadyoung  2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Hello Rick, The design comes from Europe I think I first saw this setup In the late 70s. and it was called a Minimum system. I just made my own version of it for electric. It is made up of very large RC equipment. the motor is an out runner with 95 KV on 16s or 67 volts fully charged it is rated at 8000 watts output. I am running 110 to 120 amps at 67 volts or 8040 watts. I have a 2.5 to 1 cog belt reduction drive giving my prop 2546 rpm. but it tacks at around 2200 with a 51x26 prop. So far it has worked the best giving a climb rate of around 200'/m. I am making a 52x30 to see if I can improve speed a little. I am climbing best around 20 to 21 mph. The batteries are 4s cells 14.2v at 8000ma, x 4 series =67v x 3 parallels gives me 24AH. I used 6600ma in 10 min at full power and climbed to 1200 in lift and sink. My set up is working and it is not the top of the line my any means, but the paraglider folks are making good power systems and there are lots of things coming along in Eruope. My ESC is 300amp 16s Alian brand but not good service. The Motor is called Watts Big and is out of business. The speed controller is a RC servo tester. If you google Radar Bernstein his ehelp videos shows epower setups and how it all works. If I can help you in any way that I can I will be clad to. If you want to call me Message me and I will give you my #. I carve my own folding props and it comes in handy trying to get the most out on the motor. I hope this helps.
      Danny

    • @onedoodadyoung
      @onedoodadyoung  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you, I had seen that original minimum years ago and liked it. I saw the Flyped and went from there and built this from scratch. This video was the 3rd flight. I have since lengthened the tubes 5" going to the harness to correct the thrust angle to be more parallel with air flow and lowered my hang point. Testing props now. I am very pleased with the unit.

    @ericoschmitt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4
