Strings, lovely guitar riff, gorgeous bass line, brilliant sax, calms down in the middle so you think it's over but then comes back! What's not to love?
'Everyone' hated this theme in 1993 - I loved it!! Maybe worth a try again now! It seems to be quite popular today. Maybe everyone is fed up of the 30 years-old piano theme!
Big-up those of us who are old enough to remember when Eastenders went "smooth jazz" for a short time! Man, they got SOO many complaints for this that they were forced to switch it back to the traditional theme song!
This version of the Eastenders theme certainly has an uplifting feel to it. It gives that light at the end of the tunnel feeling like things will get better. I think this theme should be played when the lockdown and the outbreak is over.
I started watching when Lola had the brain tumour, it was very hard to watch since I’ve lost a school friend to one. It will be the 7th anniversary this month
I don't think this is anywhere near as bad as many people make out, the fretless bass sounds like a Roland U-220 sound module and the piano sounds like an Emu Proteus/1. They hired session musicians to record real saxophone and electric guitar parts as synthesized saxophone and electric guitar probably wouldn't have cut it ( although I personally think midi synthesized saxophones sound OK but even in 1993 the bar was still quite high for TV broadcast music and the money earned from this being pitched was more than it otherwise cost to hire session musicians to play some instrument parts live ). In August or September 2008 at a friend's 21st birthday party we had to play pass the parcel with this version of Eastenders back to back with Songs of Praise singing Glory be to God on high to Eastenders theme tune ( yes in 1988 BBC Songs of praise really did do this! ). Here's another intersting fact about the Eastenders them tune it's actually loosely based on a song from the 70s called Fairytale by Dana ( as they both sound similar ).
When people ask how old am I? I always say old enough to remember the uproar when Eastenders had a new theme and then nobody liked it so they reverted back 🤣🤣
Kalem Stacey mum Stacey kalem mum Stacey said she is going to go back to home tonight at moms tomorrow then go back to moms then go get back to dinner tomorrow then go back to dinner tomorrow to come home tomorrow and tomorrow then go EastEnders dinner tonight then come back to home tonight at the house tonight at dinner tomorrow ☃️🎄❄️🤶🎄👍⛄️
This theme makes Albert Sqaure seem like a peacful and mellow place, like paradise. Unlike reality where drama and hell constantly breaks loose topped with about 5 deaths per year
I just can’t get enough of this version. Imagine if General Hospital having this instead of Faces of the Heart or Guiding Light instead of Hold on to Love in the 90s?
This was part of a total rework of EE. New opening and closing sequences, which replaced the blue and grey ones which had been around since 1985. The green titles remain to this day but not the track sadly... The actual track used for the title sequence didn't include this much sax. This is the instrumental version of the track for the vocal version called I'll Always Believe in You by Sharon Benson, released in 1993. I remember seeing it on TOTP!
The titles have been completely redone twice since this version debuted. The river hasn’t been green in over 20 years, lol. They first changed in 1999 to feature a more animated grey/ silvery river, and then they were done again in 2009 to include clouds and an ill-fitting tropical colour scheme... because nothing screams London like lush mint-greenery, wispy clouds and a dark blue river...🤷🏻♂️
This should be the theme and intro for next season. "Starring Steve McFadden, Ross Kemp, Danny Dyer, with Adam Woodyatt as Ian Beale, and June Brown as Dot Cotton-Branning" with photos of the characters included.

This was the best theme by far, I don't understand how people didn't like this. The theme should be changed every 5 years, Coronation St is a shocker so drab
I agree it feels like the tune is expressing peace within the residents of the square, I also think it would of worked well during the gang era when Dalton, Hunter and Johnny Allen were around it just has that feel to it.
I really loved this theme, I was sorry when they reverted back to the plinky-plonk theme that they still have today. But, on reflection, I suppose it was too classy for something as gritty and morose as EE is. It's a bit "too Knots Landing" I reckon.
If you're comparing this to Level then you clearly have no clue. Sorry but Mark King is one of the most skilled and talented bassists in the world. Period.
@@LogoMan7777 never heard of it if you asked me to name a level 42 song I would say lessons in love and that it runs in a family one and then i would be stumped after that
yeah when i hear this i expect people to be awash with cheery banter and endlessly apologising because that's what happens when good neighbours become good friends.
A few years ago the Eastenders youtube channel uploaded a huge run of the first year of episodes from 1985. There were downer moments in it, but more than enough cheers to make the episodes almost seem unrecognizable compared to the show as it is now. I think it started to just get plain miserable around 1999, and then ridiculously so from 2001 onwards, where the show just seemed obsessed with contriving the worst outcomes and the worst nature in every character.
I wouldn't quite say that. The show has had happier phases in the 80's and 90's. It's just no-one today would know it because it's been continuously, notoriously miserable for about the last 20 years now.
The tune itself is actually very good. However, if used now, it just would not fit with the tone of Eastenders. Eastenders is a dark and gritty soap drama and the music played in this version somewhat lightens the tone which would not work. Also, it would sound dated as well as being poked fun at as sounding like Porn music or Ceefax music. The style of this music should have been used as the theme tune for the short lived Eldorado soap drama back in the early 1990's as it's got a bright and sunny feel to it.
“Thank you for holding, your call is important to us”
HAHAHA!! THAT'S FUNNY!!

We loved it here in Australia, best version
@@davidm4864 well it has got quite a ‘Neighbours’ vibe to it! Definitely a lot cheerier than the current miserable Eastenders theme!
I also loved(and somehow remembered)..this rendition of the Eastenders theme..I was only ten years old in 1993...
The 0:42 part feels very nostalgic and mellow, the sound of Eastenders golden past era.. but i guess we have to move on with the times unfortunately
And now to the weather, with Phil Mitchell.

I was even more annoyed when they reinstated the original but added the duff duffs at the start of the episode - they have no business being there lol
I agree! This was great!

My favourite show.
BBC in it's Eldorado stage....
This is actually not bad at all. Delightfully smooth with a touch of hold music you would intentionally wait on the phone to listen to.
This was around the same time as when Neighbours jazzed up their iconic theme. Lasted a lot longer than this one.
