Gurren Lagann is the ONLY anime that i can watch multiple times without getting bored of it.
The last 3 episodes always get me 😭
And the fact that Simon is basically GOD at the end of the show. He can revive people if he want, time travel,revert everything. But he choose to not do it.
He choose to let the things happen like they should happen and not regret anything because everything that happen is what make him who he is now.
Dont let other people tell you what you should become, do the things you choose by yourself and dont let the regrets distract you.
Kamina and Simon teach me so much while i was growing up with that show. This anime will always remain N°1 in my Heart

I'm not sure if anyone has said this yet, but the final special move used (Viral Throwing Simon) is the first special move Kamina came up with fighting the two gunmen at the beginning. That is honestly just peak symbolism.

If you guys didn't understand, in addition to the reasons you gave, one of the reasons why Simon put himself in that position (of abandoning everything), is because, in the final battle, to overcome the Anti Spiral, he absorbed the spiral energy. of all his friends, and their alternative versions in the multiverse (That's what happens in chapter 26 and is what creates the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, the multiversal union) So at the end of it all, he had infinite spiral energy ( Enough to do the same thing as The Anti Spiral, even more, being basically a God), but if he continued using it, it would cause the reboot/end of the universe/multiverse with the Nemesis Spiral (What the Anti Spiral wanted to avoid, and basically, the reason for the series). So when he told him "protect the universe at all costs" That was it, preventing the Spiral Nemesis from passing, that's why he walked away.

I assumed it was just him moving on past his losses and being a protector from the shadows. Your reason makes way more sense. He'll stick to wandering and only act if absolutely needed. Even then he has to be very careful in what he does. Now that he's a multiversal god with infinite power, he is also the greatest threat to reality itself in that he may very well cause the spiral nemesis if not careful.

Narrative reasons and character driven reasons can be different.
The fact that this show gives you both is just a statement as to how amazing it is.

I love that Kamina acknowledged that Simon got taller than him.
I always saw it as his way of telling him that he's proud that he's reached greater heights, that he grew to be an even greater leader than even he was
It truly is so, as well that, back in ep 1, he states how he despises symbols taller than him whne confronting their village leader and the gunmen, but when it comes to Simon, you can tell just how damn proud he is

Also, small tidbit; the voice-over intro for every episode is in fact 'old' Simon - he's been retelling his story to us from the very beginning.
For me, Gurren Lagann is a story about depression. Simon was a depressed and anxious child, who relied on Kamina to push him forward. They had a support system with each other, so when Kamina died, all of that fell apart, and Simon fell into a seemingly bottomless depression. Only through Nia was Simon finally able to start healing and overcome his grief, and through that, start to overcome his depression and anxiety.
Lordgenome was the Simon of his generation, who led the fight against the Anti-Spiral, and they even made it all the way to the Death Spiral, but they just couldn't beat the Anti-Spiral. Lordgenome watched as all of his friends and loved ones die in a pointless war against fate. And so he spiraled into a deep depression that led him to the only conclusion with any hope of seeing tomorrow. He killed all of the other Spiral Warriors and sent humanity underground, as he stayed on the surface as the lone protector of Earth. You get to see this backstory in the first movie, which I highly recommend both. But he was never able to heal, he tried to create life to fill the void in his soul, but he never got true human connection again. It was only after his death and resurrection that he got to see humans doing what he once did, before everything went wrong. He was able to right the wrongs of his past and be a warrior fighting for his love of humanity one last time, Simon and Nia broke down his walls and in the end, the old king could be young again.
The Anti-Spiral were once a Spiral Race who, upon discovering the Spiral Nemesis, essentially that the continued use and evolution of Spiral Energy would use up all of the energy in the universe and cause a Heat Death, they fell into endless depression. A depression so deep that they all put themselves into vegetative states to prevent the use of Spiral Energy, so deep that they lashed out and destroyed any large Spiral Race for the anxiety that if one got through, got too big, that would mean the end of everything. They never did it out of malice, just fear. And in the end, when Simon destroyed the collective of the Anti-Spiral, they passed the torch of protector to him.
And in the end, Simon overcame it all. He overcame his depression and helped to heal everyone else's. So when we see the person Simon loves most in the world die for a second time, we see how far he's come in healing. Simon imploded when Kamina died, becoming a black hole of grief, not dissimilar to Lordgenome or the Anti-Spiral. But in the end, when Nia dies, he doesn't implode, he doesn't curse the heavens, and, even though he literally has the power of a god, he doesn't need to bring her back or save her. He already did. He already saved her and brought her home. So he's able to kiss his wife and tell her he loves her, as she dies with both of them smiling.
This is why Gurren Lagann is my favorite anime of all time. It's hype and funny and is filled with gorgeous art direction, but more than that, it's healing. I always rewatch it when I'm in a depression and it always helps push me back up. Watching Simon, this scared and broken kid, grow and heal and overcome his depression and anxiety always helps me to believe in the me who believes in me. It is a truly perfect series.

Also I've yet to see any other Anime, to this day, have a battle by throwing planets at their foe, and them responding with

This anime is one of my formative pieces of media. It came out during my high school years, and during a period where I wasn't in a great place mentally. I won't say anything like "this show saved my life" or some other hyperbolic statement, but it definitely helped me dig myself out of the hole I found myself in. It led me back to all the great super robot shows and manga of the 70s and 80s and still informs my tastes in media to this day. I'm a huge sucker for drastic escalation of scales and stakes, found family will always get me emotional, and if you play the opening theme song during your final battle you're getting a 10/10 from me.
All The Lights In The Sky Are Stars
The opening battle at the first episode.. Is the evil "what if" future where Simon became too powerful and create the Spiral Nemesis, the entire universe is in war, that's why Boota is a human in the opening ... But never happened in reality because Simon was humble... And stop using the spiral power for himself... Remember? Jimmy asked him to revive everyone with the spiral power and he didn't do it... The final line of Simon "our spiral friends are waiting/ all stars are cousins" is contradicting with the line in the first episode "all light in the heaven are our enemies".... This is a powerful message... I was mind blow when I thought about it

I watched it fairly shortly after it came out, and I'm not exaggerating when I say the show was very fundamental to helping me deal with the pains and hardships of my adult life. There has always been a following here in the US, but I'm very happy to see it get even more attention -- and that people are being more and more turned towards the studio's works in general.

This is one of the best show a teenager could watch. It’s capable of giving confidence, strength, perspective, and more, and entertain with the most gigantic mechas the anime world has ever seen, and without a 500+ episodes arc. Ep 26 is great, ep 27 is just over any measurable scale.
Kamina is the inside voice everyone needs.

2 weeks have passed since they return to the Earth after the final fight.
Nia held on by recalling some old memories to recreate her body informations that was fading away. She was barely able to move at the end and was putting an act, Yoko was already aware of the fact that Nia was dying since she was the one helping her to put her dress.
What did Simon do during the ending time skip ? He was Mr.Beast digging wells to provide water for the people in villages (In the Manga)

The anit-spirals simply saw the spiral nemesis as a ceiling they had no hope of breaking through before it collapsed on their heads, Simon isn't scared to break through barriers in his path towards the unknown anymore. The anti-spirals aren't only Simon's antithesis, they are a mirror on humanities fear of the unknown, and Simon's fear. The writers and animators of this show are incredible.
To sum it up:
Anti-Spiral = Antipathy & Nhilism.
Spiral = Faith, Determination and Optimism.
i love how Josh is talking about how handsome Simon is in his wedding suit, like Josh was simon's Father :D
I love this show. Even the show itselfe is embodying the spiral. The show totally spirals out of control in just 27 Episodes.

Truly, not just one of the greatest anime, but one of the most beautiful works of art of all time. I'm so thankful I got to experience Gurren Lagann, and so happy to see you guys experience it as well. Later, buddy.
I come back to rewatch these last two pretty often! I'm a big fan of the English VA for the anti-spiral. His lines during the final fight and give me chills every time!
TTGL is top 10 for me, I love seeing peoples first time reaction to it. Make sure to watch the movies! They are basically recaps but with added animation, the beginning of the first movie and the end fight of the second is pure hype.
Gurren Laggan wiil forever be my favorite anime at the time i first watched it it pulled me out of a dark place and inspired me to be better.

This anime was not broadcast late at night, but on Sundays at 8:30.
When I was a child, I remember watching the final episode in real time and spending the day filled with a sense of loss.
Cosplay on point!! The best ending in anime. That final fight with the opening playing is simply amazing.
I loved these TTGL reaction videos guys, and I swear, if I could errase a series from my mind to forget it in order to experience it againg like the very first time, it would be this amazing show , for me TTGL made me feel a huge amount of emotions, SO MUCH HYPE in those epic battles (specially the Kamina's last fignt and the final battle) ... oh man, I still remember feeling that the blood in my arms was boiling in those chapters, definittley Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann exceded all my expectatios, my favourite anime of all times.
Tengen toppa gurren lagann was one of the most influential pieces of fiction in my life, up until this day i think of the phrase "Believe in you who believes in yourself" every time i feel down. Nya is the best waifu in all anime, no discussion.

Great ride guys. Make sure you watch the 2nd movie because the ending is even more "super". Also watch the parallel works #8 to see the origin of the spiral king.
When the Anti-Spiral is destroyed it asks Simon to protect the universe at all cost (against the inherent threat of the desire of progress in spiral-kind), and Simon replies "Of course we will. Humanity isn't that stupid." I must admit I considered the situation on Earth right now, our continuous technological and industrial advancement and expansion. And didn't feel quite as confident as Simon. But, it does feel like a call to action to the viewer. Our continuous progress can destroy us. But we should each strive to prevent that. Not by rejecting progress, but by going the Lagan way and ensuring that it always leads towards a brighter future.
What I think is interesting is that it is strongly implied that Simon *could* use the Spiral Power to bring Nia back, but at that point might as well bring Kamina back and everyone else who died, and *that is what the Anti-Spiral was worried about.*

I have seen this series so many time but every time I see it always hits home and I loved seeing both of your reactions and appreciation for this, 10/10 video for a 10/10 anime.
P.S Watch the movies as others have said, I considered the movies ending to be the "real" and canon ending.
Hell yeah! It was definitely a ride with you guys! I loved the discussions you guys had with each other. Some were really off and some was basically what happened.
You guys should also do the Gurren-hen and Lagaan-hen movies. They recap the entire series with minor changes, redone animation and voice lines. Honestly, the parts they redid are better in the movies. And the stuff they changed are fun, in a kind of alternative canon.
Now u guys have to watch Gunbuster & Diebuster. Also Kill La Kill.
Loved the reaction series, gurren laggan is one of my favorite series of all time. I thino the instant tears is due to the way they use the score to highlight emotional moments
Now it's movie fight time. There are two movies, and the first one condenses the first half of the show with Kamina and Simon, and essentially is just a shortened retelling with few differences. The second movie, particularly, the last half of the second movie, makes some major changes, and the final fight both becomes bigger than ever, and even more personal. If you want to swan song this bitch, I recommend watching the second movie. They must have thought they didn't get crazy enough with the climax. Minor spoilers though, there's boobs that sneak up on you a couple times. Be careful out there.

PLEASE PLEASE WATCH THE MOVIES! Those are the finished strory, new details in a summary format, but even better than the series!
The flashforward from the beginning was the production team playing with where they thought the story would go. As production rolled on the story and context changed, so that original opening became a sort of artifact of the initial trajectory of the series.
I like to think of it as still "canon," with the Multidimensional Labyrinth giving it a sensible place to fit into the story. Instead of a glimpse into the material future, we got one brief peak at someone's (Simon's?) experience in the Labyrinth. Still accomplishes the same thing (piques the audience's interest with a "promise" of things to come) without needing to conform to the actual events seen in how the story would eventually develop.
I'd even hazard a guess that the Multidimensional Labyrinth was concocted in part as a caveat for why we got hit at the beginning with a seemingly more reckless bloodknight in Simon, a humanoid "Boota," and a series-patented nonsense term (Multidimensional Waterfall) that never came back around (feasibly it became two different things: the aforementioned mind Labyrinth, and the condensed space of the Spiral Death Machine).
Speaking of Boota during the Labyrinth sequence, I don't think he ever actually super-evolves into the humanoid form, thus he never actually "reverts." I do think, though, the story is suggesting that he did in fact have enough agency and spiral power, as a pigmole, to succumb to the Labyrinth like the rest of the team; i.e. the canon explanation of the Labyrinth as well as the visual introduction of the Anti-Spiral King are nested inside of one of its traps. The scenario of Boota's we see just happens to be a little meta.

This whole finale is so fucking epic from the super awesome galaxy size Gurren Lagann fighting off the Anti-Spiral with Kamina reappearing before Simone is so freaking cool then the music blasting all over the place this is the definitive anime fight where the OP plays and such a great series to show to anyone to pierce through the heavens and fate itself baby
at least, the wedding finished, unlike for a certain Samurai who was about to marry someone who cannot exist without the entity he destroyed.
I recommend Kill la Kill if you want a similar animation, made by Gainax/Trigger. Much love ❤

Agreeing with the others here- highly recommend checking out Lagann-Hen, the second movie.
In terms of Eva vs Gurren Lagann, you can consider Evangelian to be a Deconstruction of the Super Robot genre, while Gurren Lagann is a Reconstruction of it, as a counter to Evangelion.

I kinda hope you guys watch the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam series. It's 43 episodes but alternatively you can watch the 3 compilation movies. It's a wild ride either way you go.
Between the moment Simon walks away into the sunset with the wedding ring, and the time skip forward to old-face President Rossiu there was the Spiral Nemesis situation. You get a glimpse of this back in the beginning of episode 1. This is Simon and the team fighting against what the Anti-spirals feared would happen, but we the audience didn't know what it was because we had no context.
Boota; So, all the lights in the heavens are our enemy, eh?
Simon: They're worthy opponents. I'll take the fabric of space-time itself and wring them out of existence!
Boota: Prepare to fire the Maelstrom cannon! Target the Great Dimensional Waterfall!
Simon: Gurren Lagann, spin on! Who the hell do you think I am?

I would only make one change to this ending. When the Anti-Spiral says to protect the universe at all costs, I wish Simon had responded with "Of course we will! Who the hell do you think we are!?" instead of just, "Of course we will. Humanity isn't that stupid.". I think it would have been a perfect way to tie things together and bring it to a close.
