Really good photographs that capture the vibe and the way Vancouver used to be. A comment here was about the situation with the hard core drugs and addicts. Mind you, it is not a new problem. My parents both attended UBC from 1960-1962 (dad proposed in the cafeteria). My day worked evenings at a pharmacy in the DTES. He told me the pharmacist used to sell drug "kits" in brown lunch bags for $2 out the back door to the alley. My father said they had amphetamine and barbituate pills and needles. Nothing like now though with people dying everywhere. I can guarantee the Volkswagen Beetle is the most popular car in those days judging by the photos. Love this, and thanks for your work!
Thanks for your comment and sharing your memories. This is the most-watched video on this channel so neither Madonna nor Melania Trump have anything over Vancouver in the 1960s. :)

This is one of the greatest videos on TH-cam. In fact it's one of the greatest videos ever made. The channel Tommy Thompson isn't available anymore. Will Vancouver in the 50s ever make an appearance again? Anemoia is nostalgia for a time never lived in. I feel intense nostalgia for Vancouver in the 50s and 60s even though I was born in 1970. I lived in Vancouver from 1973 - 2005. I miss Vancouver vibes which are heavenly. I will still visit Vancouver at least once a year.
This is Tommy Thomson’s channel. I am Tommy Thomson. I just changed the name of my channel because my focus is now music videos. I am an urban geographer with a master’s degree from UBC and I’ve given up on making content about important issues or intellectual matters because whenever I do, at best, I get censored, and at worst, I get attacked. It’s simply not safe in the current social climate. So I’m an artist now instead of an academic/intellectual.
My former colleagues at UBC ignored my desperate pleas for over one year. I eventually asked them to return my thesis to me. They returned my thesis to me. Why should the UBC library have the privilege of holding a thesis in its collection from someone who the entire UBC community ignores and much of the community has contempt for me. So I demanded my thesis be mailed to me, and after a few months of terse email exchanges, they finally honoured my request.
At this point, I’ve been run out of Vancouver by the politically correct intelligentsia who run the city and their minions. I’m in a very different place now. I couldn’t be more alone than I am now, but there is a certain peace that comes with that. Although it’s very hard for me here too.
I’ve tried to make intellectual geography content about the place where I relocated but that got censored too. Pretty much anything I say or do gets censored. Even my artwork and music videos which have zero social political content gets censored and deboosted by social media algorithm.
@@tommystunestoons I've never heard of anyone being run out of Angercouver Bonkerscouver. There are tent cities on Hastings Street with hard core drug users, hard core, so to be run out of Vancouver is quite an accomplishment. UBC is a heavenly place with heavenly vibes. UBC vibes. I plan to visit UBC again very soon. I dropped out of first year college. To get a Masters Degree requires a lot of reading. TH-cam videos and apps such as Subway Surfers have wrecked my attention span for reading. I used to read books from cover to cover at one time years ago. Best of luck, Tommy Thomson. I really enjoyed your archival videos about Vancouver. I even downloaded them, that's is before they were taken down, as mp3s which I have on my Walkman to this day. Years ago, all I ever did was smoke pot at UBC. I quit smoking due to chronic fear and anxiety. I'm not sure when or if I'll smoke pot ever again despite it being legal in Canada and more recently in Thailand too which I also visited 3 times totalling 13 months. I actually thought your old channel was taken down because Madonna found out about all the Madonna videos on that channel lol. Best wishes.
Very amazing to see this, though I didn't exist with those years displayed in the video, but I was raised in West Vancouver for the years I grew up. Vancouver has always been an awesome city for me. I enjoyed the days studying and working in downtown Vancouver, thanks very much for the memories!!
My older siblings and I used to go there Sunday morning instead of church but we'd make sure to go by to chat with the Priest when mass got out so he'd mentions seeing us to our Mum later in the day. It was the first time I was trusted with a secret
@@Gerhardiumthat’s fantastic and happy to hear you had the nouse to have a chat with the priest to make it all legit. I’ve heard of that restaurant but before my time. We only had Binos that was open all night and White Tower Pizza on Robson in the 80s.
Great collection. Excellent quality. Reminds me of my childhood there. What a lot of people who live in Vancouver now-a-days often do not realize is Vancouver was not always a "Left-Wing Progressive Utopia" (or so they believe)........ back in the1950's and 1960's it was in general a little right of center, but became more and more Liberal and Left in the decades after 1970 following the "Hippy Era" of the Vietnam War tragedy down south and the migration of similar-minded people from other parts of Canada.
Let’s face it-that’s a situation based on the pandemic, and not normal circumstances. Thant being said, it would be better to start from scratch and completely rewrite the provincial liquor laws.
My theory is that there are so many nuts back east that they all head west and could not go further so they stayed here... look at the sorry drug problem and all sorts of crazy ways we try and convince ourselves to legalize them.. this shows me they have given up... druggies from all over the world will now stay in Vancouver... Welcome to Sodom and Gomorrah. I agree that our current Mayor Kennedy is worst and that is saying a lot... useless professional politician
I remember honest Joe's store and army and navy stores. On hastings street and woodwards. They had a restaurant named the white lunch. Was a cheap place to eat and the seafood restaurant was popular also. My parents said it used to be a nice street back in the 1950s and 1960s. Some of the early 1970s it started going downhill, it seems. They had a photographer who took people's pictures walking on hastings street. Quiet popular also. It used to be a clean place to shop and safe street. Too bad how it is now .
I used to work at Army and Navy, when it was still safe to walk around in that neighbourhood, even at night. It saddens me to think of what it has all become now.
04:22 One of scores of corner grocery stores that served the various districts. The vast majority of them were located east of Cambie St. They mainly sold bottles of pop stored in floor coolers, candy/confection, tobacco products and the staples like dairy, bread, canned goods etc. When you ran out of something you didn't drive to a strip mall (they didn't exist then); you walked or biked to the local grocery store except on Sunday when they were all closed. In Little Italy, there were five grocery stores located on Victoria Dr. between Parker St. and 1st Ave.
When moving to Coquitlam in 1968 from Ontario, all the roads were still gravel! 69, they started paving North Rd, Austin Ave, Como Lake Rd, then all the side streets after that. Depends on what you deem "nice." Temperatures seldom went over 85 F. (no Celsius scale in those days). We had heavier rains in April, May and November than we do today. Summers were warm but generally lasted only to the end of the first week in September when the cooler air became rather noticeable.
