I have a friend who makes a list of things to do. First on that list is 'get up.' I asked him why and he said that if he doesn't, he'll go back to sleep.
It's so easy to beat yourself up over spending your time badly instead of finding the ways to coax yourself away from what keeps you from spending it better. Recently I read Chris Bailey's Hyperfocus, and I started paying more attention to when my mind begged to switch tasks in the middle of something, or how I was setting myself up to distract myself. I've only made so much progress, and I recently found myself just kind of binge-distracting myself, but I do notice a difference, and the timing was perfect for hearing your recent advice about noticing the time in between tasks, or the time it takes you to get starte
As a newer freelancer, this video really hits key points I am in the process of finding out. There is true value in these points, and I'm going to reference this video often because of that.
Thanks for sharing! When you explained about how we waste time on social networks, on things like checking likes, it made me to remember something a doctor told me we do wrong. Every hour of working on your computer it's healthy to walk away from the screen for a few minutes, to rest your eyes, but what we usually do it's to walk away from the computer and be with the cellphone, so we really never rest.
As a modder, artist, animator and as a person in general, i never finished my projects, i did way too many that i started, you really helped me overcome this problem and i have alot done. Thank you.
#1 is so important! Watched this video lastnight and i already caught myself trying to go to watch "reaction videos" in between watching a painting tutorial video and actually painting. Great list Bobby! I learned #2 in a previous video and its paid off so much. Looking forward to applying the others!
I love how you put a little "paint palette" on the corner of your screen, that is such a cool little digital art tip, I can't believe I've never thought of that or seen it before!
These tips are so important. Really appreciate your positive outlook and your clear belief that we have the power to take control of our directed conscious activity and to shape our lives! Thank you so much!
Only just started reading some of those books you've mentioned and already its changing a lot of how I approach things! Definitely recommend reading up on productivity.
So cool you made a seperate video for these tips! I watched the stream when you talked about this and now this list hangs just above my computerscreen. I'm totally mindblown by how it changed my days. Thank you so much Bobby, you're one of my biggest inspirations! 😄✌
Bobby I've been watching your videos for weeks now. I must say that i fully agree wiht the advices you give out in this video, thanks for enumerating them. i've been doing a few of things you mentioned in the past year and I must say that this is quite powerful, people should pay closer attention to theese things.
Great tips! I will start reading those books and applying some of the tips you mentioned in this video, especially the second one to plan ahead for the next day. One extra thing that has helped me a lot (especially since becoming a father) is to wake up earlier every morning (and go to bet earlier as well). I can easily gain 2 more hours of peaceful work a day by just waking up two hours earlier. And I normally find that these 2 hours are the most productive ones that I have during the entire day.
Thank you so much Bobby! Love these videos once in a while , it's kinda like refreshing my mind whenever I feel lost or feel there is too much on my plate right now, my mind brings me to your TH-cam channel. And i instantly feel better ! Thank you Bobby ! Pretty sure You are helping millions of Struggling artist like myself and professionals to cope with art blocks and daily tasks. I can't wait to meet you at Pasadena, California at lightbox expo. Definitely coming to see you, learn and humble myself at the event from Norwalk, Connecticut. 🤘✌️🙏
Hi Sylvester, Nancy here for Bobby. Thank you so much for your message, I know Bobby appreciates it and I'm really happy to hear you enjoyed the video. See you next year at LightBox Expo :) -Nancy
1. I need breaks between tasks or I'm very tired and slow. But my breaks are pretty much always longer than they were supposed to be. 2. I still need to spend time planning it, so, not really a big difference for me, but I guess planning a day earlier works well for many people. 3. I like it, but I spent tons of time learning diffrent ways of organizing, most of which didn't really work. At least not until i started to mix them together. 4. And how can I stop being stressed all the time? 5. This sounds interesting 6. This also I think those advices aren't bad but I wouldn't call them simple tips. It's not simple to stop stress or wasting time. Guess I'm kind of bitter about seeing again almost the same advices as ever, that don't really work for me.
It's hard for me to stay productive because I've been feeling so depressed and exhausted for a few months now. Everything feels so pointless to me. But im going to try so hard to get past this slump and get back on track. Thanks for the video, I know it will be a good start. Also, do you have any tips for concentration?for a wandering/worrying mind for example?
hey, I've had problems with this recently so I feel you. one thing that really helped me was the idea of non-zero days (an idea that started on reddit, there's a really inspiring thread you can find about it). basically the idea is that if you try to do everything all at once, you're just gonna exhaust yourself and be demotivated. but if you focus on getting even just one thing done - even as small as making your bed - it will create a chain reaction of productivity. and remember to celebrate every little thing you do! everything helps. and if you end up having a zero day anyway? forgive yourself. and promise to do better the next day. as for a wandering mind, i have been meditating recently and it's been incredibly helpful and calms my anxiety. try just doing a five minute meditation to start (i like using guided meditations, it gives me something to focus on). it can be difficult to concentrate at first, and you might get frustrated with yourself, but forgive yourself and keep at it. i hope this helps!
All of the issues you brought up stem from the same place. It's the lack of feeling accomplishment. You have to see things through. Try breaking down tasks into bite size pieces that you can complete. Does not matter how small as long as you complete it. This will create an association with your brain and the feeling of completing tasks. The feeling of accomplishment. When your brain receives that hit of dopamine from completing a task it will want to repeat it. I speak from experience. I've been there before, it sucks. I wish you the best friend. Keep drawing
This video pretty much got me through finals week at a concept design school, and I'm actually proud of my final project since I was able to get so much work done. Thanks so much for this video!

Thanks for making this video! And for listing the books you read. I think investing time on things that will help me in the future is one of the hardest things for me, EVERYTHING has that "URGENT" stamp on and its hard to take a moment to think beyond that. Also I can't help but to comment this but I'm coming from a really supportive place when I say : Number five should be "Be aware of how you're spending your time". I know it doesn't change the meaning or the importance of the words, but as non native English speaker I really appreciate when people point at my writing errors.
Man you keep dropping great content on the regular, thanks for that. This is especially useful to me right now as I've been working quite hard on doing the things I need to to make my life more productive and efficient. Step 3 here really resonated with me... I've read some of the books you listed and have the rest on a list. Currently I'm reading a fantastic book about how to get organized and stay organized for ADHD people like me... it already has given me some amazing tips that are going to pay dividends down the line. Thanks again for all this great content.
About the part of practicing drawing quicker than the brain can process it, I'd like to share something that I learned from Jim Kwik. In his Super Reading course, we have a speed drill exercise that works wonder, it's called 4-3-2-1 technique. First, we place down a marker in a new book, then read for 4 minutes at the speed that we can actually comprehend things. Place another marker. Then, return to the first marker, and make a timer of 3 minutes and read to the second marker before 3 minutes ends. Then, read the same session, marker to marker, with a timer of 2 minutes. Finally, read this session with a timer of 1 minute. It is the same idea as practicing drawing too fast for the brain to handle. You are pushing the limit of your brain and even though the drawings may not come out as good, or the reading might not even be considered reading anymore, the brain gets trained to process at a much faster rate. Then when you return to normal way of drawing/reading, the brain handles what used to be difficult/full capacity as super easy. :D
thanks for this! I was happy to learn that I already do some of these, without knowing it. Some of these i'm guilty of getting wrong too... 'knowing your tasks for tomorrow' is a new one i've got to grips with this year and its very helpful. I've just got to waste less time between tasks now... :D
I tend to get overwhelmed when it comes to focusing on more than one goal at a time, so I will focus on one a week to see how I get on, and then build up to two goals a week later, then three etc. 👍 Thanks for this video! 😀💖
I love that ! Especially the first one ! I think people need to teach themselves are to stay focus. That's the best way to not get sucked into the socilal media vortex when we are switching task or just after posting something :)
Tip number 3 about becoming more efficient learning how to be more productive is easy to overdo. I feel terrible when I try to make optimizations to an already highly optimized system, and realise I would feel happier if I'd just used the system I built.
Drawing lots of skeletal anatomy, bugs under my portable microscope. The more I practice doing these things, I noticed that I have become faster in completing them. Changing how I draw these subjects helps too (using coloured pencils for the general skeletal shape, filling in details with graphite). A skeleton is complex and intricate, but after a while the shapes can be easily broken down and a pattern can be recognized, nature is full of patterns. It's important to sit down and finish a drawing that is started, otherwise it will sit for days, months, years...
Becoming self aware and remaining self aware through out the day can have such a difference in itself, and only grows as the other tips build on. Think to yourself. You only have so much time in the day, in your life. Do you want that time to slip away? Do you want to risk not reaching your end goals in life? Don't let any of this time slip away.
Thanks for the tips! Ill give it a try!! I have a bunch of work/exams coming up so increasing my productivity/efficiency will be key, planning to update if successful (or not) :)
Thanks for the suggestion, Maxene! That topic has been highly requested so hopefully Bobby can put a video together explaining his organization system someday😊 ~S
I would love to come back in a week and say ‘wow, this changed my life’ But I already do many of these things, some of them first came later on, but some of the other things was there to begin with. I am not sure if I get much done, but I create a lot so I can develop to a level I want to be at... I want to go into this specific art school in my area, and I really want to say that I did my best when I send in my application. As of right now I am on my third year of drawing daily, and even though some days are rough, if you get used to it, it becomes so big a habit that you can’t stop
Thank you :) *goes to amazon to search for the books* I am trying to decide if moving to a full time job will be good for me, and still be able to run my YT and start an Etsy. I'm just scared about time management - and the uncertainty of it all is stressing me out big time. I am currently part time and work on videos / commissions in my time off. But honestly, I struggle as it is to fit it all in - but the financial security of a full time job is so alluring... I'm not ready for full freelance (too scared of not meeting mortgage repayments), though it is the absolute dream
Bobby Chiu Thank you N 😊 I just feel like, I have worked for years to get the courage to get to how far I am, and I am incredibly determined to not stop. But I do think some changes are due and needed to help keep everything in order and balanced 💕 Thank you for replying :) x
Notes: 1. Before you finish task 1, already be thinking about task 2 2. Have today planned night before 3. Constantly learn for the future - productivity tips and career tips & tools for your industry (1 hour a day) 4. Only worry about what you can control. Let go of things out of my control 5. Doing things with concentration (& quicker on purpose) 6. Only check things when they need to be checked 7. When you are relaxing, relax
His points hurts but that's the truth that we need to here... So Thank you! I'll probably comeback after 6-7Days? and we'll see the result in my case hehe :)
Going back to tip 3, I'd really like a video on your system for organizing your drawings, files and photos. It's something I really struggle with after years, and is a topic I rarely see touched on.
Thank you for this video! GIves me hope of actually being capable to complete tasks at some point) I'll try to see if there's any immediate change after a week of applying this or so.
Hi Bobby thank you for the video! I though maybe you can make something related to this video: a video about draw injuries. When I first encountered my own drawing injury I didn`t know how to deal with it at all. I didn`t know it even existed (I knew RSI was a thing but I though that was only from working with your mouse). When I did more research I found out that lot of artist struggle with it. Just a idea. Keep it up with the video`s I love them!
The way to get lots done is to have the mature, nurturing parents as a child. Trauma and the neural pruning that happens in our brains as children are what effect our productivity and liveliness. You can’t change that with willpower.
Great tips! I'd love to know your view on how to better manage your energy too! Some days I'm super productive at work but I end up too exhausted to do anything personal in the end of the day :(
@@BobbyChiu thank you! :) I have never been able to get myself to digitally draw and actually get into the routine of drawing and even making a social media for my art but this video motivated me so much that now my art has been thriving lately and I'm really happy with how I'm actually improving my routine
Great video! Would like to ask, if thinking of older me and what I would care in 10 years. You mentioned balance. That would be also very important to me, but what when there's is a high wall to climb to get that good, before balance is affordable?
”Things like checking the latest thing on TH-cam..."

Yeah, tell me about it. I ought to be sketching right now.

hey, I've had problems with this recently so I feel you. one thing that really helped me was the idea of non-zero days (an idea that started on reddit, there's a really inspiring thread you can find about it). basically the idea is that if you try to do everything all at once, you're just gonna exhaust yourself and be demotivated. but if you focus on getting even just one thing done - even as small as making your bed - it will create a chain reaction of productivity. and remember to celebrate every little thing you do! everything helps. and if you end up having a zero day anyway? forgive yourself. and promise to do better the next day.

I'm not ready for full freelance (too scared of not meeting mortgage repayments), though it is the absolute dream
Hey Tor, Nancy here for Bobby.
Whatever you decide to do, you'll make the right choice for you! Keep it up and best of luck.

Bobby Chiu Thank you N 😊 I just feel like, I have worked for years to get the courage to get to how far I am, and I am incredibly determined to not stop. But I do think some changes are due and needed to help keep everything in order and balanced 💕 Thank you for replying :) x
This is amazing content! Who knew that being interested in painting could lead me to becoming more productive 🙂
So glad you're enjoying Bobby's content!! Thanks for your support
AMAZING
Wisdom personified! I got to stop filling my in-between time with your videos though ;)
Now now... haha
WHAT DO YOU HAVE AGAINST HOT POCKETS???? Awesome tips Bobby, reminds me alot of the book Eat that Frog.
Notes:
1. Before you finish task 1, already be thinking about task 2
2. Have today planned night before
3. Constantly learn for the future - productivity tips and career tips & tools for your industry (1 hour a day)
4. Only worry about what you can control. Let go of things out of my control
5. Doing things with concentration (& quicker on purpose)
6. Only check things when they need to be checked
7. When you are relaxing, relax
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯!!!

I love this video! I'm the biggest procrastinator on earth.
His points hurts but that's the truth that we need to here... So Thank you! I'll probably comeback after 6-7Days? and we'll see the result in my case hehe :)
You can do it! Can't wait to hear how it goes. :D ~ Ashley

Going back to tip 3, I'd really like a video on your system for organizing your drawings, files and photos. It's something I really struggle with after years, and is a topic I rarely see touched on.
Thank you for this video! GIves me hope of actually being capable to complete tasks at some point)
I'll try to see if there's any immediate change after a week of applying this or so.
Thank you for watching! Good luck and don't be too hard on yourself if you don't see immediate change, keep going :) -Nancy on behalf of Bobby
You can’t change that with willpower.
i love this damn art style
Haha, thank you so much! ~ Ashley
Ouuch his points hurt:'). I needed it. Thank you thank you thank youuu for this. Now I will hunt that booklist at the library 5:26 ........
5 years later:
she did not in fact, read all those books. Just 1 in 5 5:31 - Eat a frog a day.
Great video, I need to do some self evaluation cause I pretty much checked them all off lol
Great tips! I'd love to know your view on how to better manage your energy too! Some days I'm super productive at work but I end up too exhausted to do anything personal in the end of the day :(
Checking things on youtube right now.
I tend to think too much what my task is for tomorrow, even when drawing, and that feels so annoying beacuse I can't stop this feeling...
I feel like I've seen this one before. Is this an updated video?
Just saw this and I will update you how it went in a week I hope! :)
Good luck :)

@@BobbyChiu thank you! :) I have never been able to get myself to digitally draw and actually get into the routine of drawing and even making a social media for my art but this video motivated me so much that now my art has been thriving lately and I'm really happy with how I'm actually improving my routine
could make a book starring those pod people
Great video!
Would like to ask, if thinking of older me and what I would care in 10 years. You mentioned balance. That would be also very important to me, but what when there's is a high wall to climb to get that good, before balance is affordable?
